You're in the wrong career or field. Nothing actually wrong with that. Just recognize it! Hardly anyone I went to college with in the early 80's is actually working in the field they prepared for. Newer and better jobs opened up and they went with it!
Can't find a job? Create one! Real estate really hot out in Whitby. (I know this as the agents are knocking on my door weekly!) This creates opportunity for painting, garbage removal, preparing a house for selling. Handi-man type stuff. You would be amazed at the number of people who would gladly pay to have the little rubber washers on their taps changed. Leaky toilets. Parts are cheap and pretty much universal fits. I don't know of ANYONE who actually removes and installs toilets! If you set up with a water proof box/container to remove offending toilet (Clients LOVE that!) and could install the new one I'm sure it would pay well to just specialize in that alone! Stay away from any job that you cannot handle. If doing tile work is not your forte it will show.
Anything that you do NOT know how to do... someone somewhere has posted a video of it on YouTube!
The best part of preparing a house for sale is the fact that AFTER the sale, if your paint begins to peel off the walls, the new owners won't even be able to come after you for a repaint! You never contracted with them in the first place!

Consider a house that sold recently in the area-it was a 3 generation home-2 little kids, Mom and Pop and 2 grandparents-and the grand parents die so no more govt pension money coming in and the parents MUST now sell.
Agent comes through and gives advice: The place needs painting, some new flooring, a pile of wood trim and etc. Agent has a list of suitable contractors who submit prices and the `winning bidder` likely gives a little kickback-a `finders fee` to the agent for handing out the work-a cosy little relationship of some years standing that the agent will not throw away in exchange for a cheaper price from some unknown, unskilled goof out of nowhere-especially if the guy is depressed over some unknown mental health issue-which may actually be nothing more than frustration over his poverty stricken/totally screwed fiscal state! For obvious reasons the agent will prefer the proven contractor with a skilled, experienced, fully equipped work force with PROVEN track record and previous experience!
Does that jackass guy saying “be independent, do what you want, make your own job” really believe that one lone guy with no experience, no tools, no track record, no contacts amongst agents or the general public can shove past EIGHT OTHERS-ALL with honed skills and proven ability? AND that the lone guy can LEARN on the job as he goes along? OH sure, he will work cheaper than the 8 guys-but he will TAKE TEN TIMES longer to do the job and the results may not be ideal due to that learning on the job deal! And remember: TIME IS MONEY-the sooner the house is finished, the sooner it can be sold-and those people NEEDED the money to pay their assorted bills-which may have included funeral costs for Grampa! They won’t and cannot wait for some guy to `LEARN`!

Too many people have watched their taxes and electric bills creep up while their income remains STALLED-and a whole lot of people have decided to GET OUT NOW-BEFORE things get WORSE-with the REAL HUGE crunch coming if LIE-berals win the next election in the new year!
The idea is simple-sell your EXPENSIVE Whitby house now and go some place out in a little town to buy another house for half the price and with half the real estate taxes that Durham charges and put one hundred grand or more in `mad money` into your pocket in the process. And the smug arrogant swine thinks some poor shmoe with no tools, no experience and no contacts can compete with existing firms out here that are-in spite of their long experience, skills and contacts-having a hard time themselves?
The asshole states: “I don’t know of anyone whole actually removes and installs toilets”! The people who ACTUALLY DO this work in your area are called PLUMBERS, you f+++ing dork! And plumbers have the tools, skill and experience to Do the job-they will NOT be dismantling your bathroom and then sneaking home to watch YouTube videos so they can figure out how to put it back together while you annoy the neighbours by s+++ting in a bucket out behind your garage.
And the BIG reason WHY you cannot get a competent handy man to do work on your house is because of the overhead-and driving to job sites to talk to brainless tightwad assholes like you is the BIGGEST cost and greatest time waster. Your operating costs will be WAY HIGHER than what you are going to get paid as a handyman-especially in Durham Region where the owners are either half starved and NEED to sell out or else they have bought something brand new that wont need work for decades!
The LIE-beral loving Toronto Red Star newspaper did a piece on a group of female handy persons operating in Toronto-and how well they were doing and etc. Lost in the rush of praise for female empowerment were a few little details such as: The women were divorced and had small children so Dad was paying child support and alimony-and MOM could live rent and mortgage free-the handy person cash was a frill she didn’t NEED to survive. Mom could do the jobs during the day while the kids were in school. Mom also had the former family mini van or station wagon and thus had instant access to a material and equipment hauler. Mom went through some program at a community college to become a `handy person` and was helped by the college to find customers-the college wants to promote their trade courses and happy, successful graduates are helpful-so the Moms got easy access to a slew of clients-all of them confident that the handy person they hired would be vetted and guided by the college so no fear of fly by night contractors of the sort featured on W-5!
Such a happy little piece of news-the Moms doing interesting work and getting paid and people getting their homes spruced up-the neighbourhood looks nicer with all that painting and landscaping and etc! Its just too bad the Red Star did not follow up on those women and left us with questions. Such as: what happened to the women when a new batch of graduates appeared and needed college aid? Was there enough work to go around-and the answer is NOT LIKELY! And what happens when the van or wagon wears out and Mom has NOT been earning enough to repair or replace it? This vehicle cost is the BIG killer of small business-contractors MUST travel-a lot!
And what happens if the insurance company finds out Mom is using the vehicle as a commercial vehicle instead of a simple passenger carrier and registers it as a commercial vehicle with all the attendant costs? A commercial vehicle gets Drive Clean tested YEARLY and if it fails-its OFF the road till its either fully repaired or replaced! It would be fun to know how many of those women are still working as handy persons or have they given up because once you run out of college customers you end up with CRAP!
My guess is those `handy women` are in the same boat as the local kid who took the heavy equipment operator course at college and got a job driving a pickup truck for a local company and the kids job ran from June to June-12 months-at which point the kid was FIRED because the GRANT the college gave to the company to encourage them to HIRE the kid ran out and was NOT renewed! The college had a new crop of graduates to promote and that local kid was yesterdays news-and the college has wrung out his pockets and wont be getting more cash from him so screw him!
Only the most arrogant and ignorant of assholes would claim “there is a job out there for everybody who wants one”! And the biggest scam of the century will be the LIE-beral carbon crap and trade program!
