RE: I'M TRAVELLING TO CAN

I live in Vancouver across the Strait of Georgia from Vancouver Island, on the southern coast of mainland BC. Here our climate is very much like in Victoria, mild winters, but we get a lot more rain here then they get in Victoria. In fact we get so much rain here that Vancouver is sometimes known as the Rain Capital of Canada. It's because we are near the moutains and the air deposits water on us before it rises over the mountains. The area of the other side of the mountains is much drier.

I might be moving to Victoria in the fall to go to University there. I won't miss the rain. I'm used to it having lived here all my life, but nobody ever likes it. So I'll be glad if I get rained on less.

I grew up in Victoria and moved to the mainland 5 yrs ago. 1 thing you'll notice about Victoria is the wind. It is always windy. I live in Surrey and I haven't noticed any more rain here then in Victoria. But then rain doesn't bother me and I really only notice extremes.

I loved the wind storms that happen in Victoria. We don't get those here. They're something awesome!

RE: I'M TRAVELLING TO CANADA I NEED HELP

This has to be the weirdest exchange of bullsh&t I have ever read.

For all the people who hate this country, get out then.

If you came here and your education means nothing, that's because it does. I don't want a third world country's idea of a doctor operating on me and neither does anyone with half a brain. Go back to school and upgrade to our standards. Don't whine. Tons of people from other countries do wonderfully here and are extremely happy.

I'm sure the kid who started this thread has cancelled his plan to come here after reading all this nonsense.

RE: I'M TRAVELLING TO CAN

I l ived in Surrey most of my life and I don't find crime worse than anywhere else. It is the press that likes to make a big issue out of it, they started their Surrey bashing in the 80's which led to Surrey jokes. Whenever anything happens in Surrey the press just jump right on it for some reason.

Sure there is crime here, but there is crime everywhere else. Sure the skytrain brought some crime with it but it does everywhere it goes. Look how bad New West is/eas around "New West Station" Its an easy and quick get a away and makes it quicker to deal drugs etc.

I want to go back to Victoria, enjoy the weather, the relatively clear roads and a coffee with Peapod, before a quick dance on Galianomamas sofa.

I loved it there and I can't wait to go back.

All I was thinking while reading this thread was that it's original poster was trolling for an outburst of Canadian pride. Reminded me a bit of our old friend Gieraldi. :)

Some people love it here, some people hate it here.

Growing up in West Van, I remember Surrey having that same bad reputation even back in the 50's & 60's. Yet I find that such reputations are usually based on nothing much at all, just a notion that grows without any substance.

The area of Rutland, in Kelowna, has the same sort of reputation... in fact, it is often referred to as the Surrey of Kelowna. Crime in Rutland isn't as high as it is in the downtown area, but the myth persists that it is a no-man's land fit only for those who don't mind the bad bits.

The people in Rutland aren''t as trendy and pretty as they are in the so-called 'better' parts of Kelowna, and the cars are older, the houses less anally perfect... yet we found that Rutland people had a decency and warmth that was lacking in the more yuppified parts of town. All in all, Rutlanders were less pretentious, less angry, people, and I suspect this is probably true of Surrey as well.

RE: I'M TRAVELLING TO CAN

How do you find the crime rate in Surrey Twila? My brother absolutely hated it there.
Well having grown up in Victoria where the crime is the same just hidden so the tourists won't know I find the crime in Surrey to be above board, in the open, and therefore easier to deal with.....

My fiance says about the reputation in Surrey that it's a bloody good thing cause if it had a better reputation we'd never have been able to afford a house here.

When people talk about the crime and junkies in Surrey I ask if they've been to Pidgeon Park lately? Cause our junkies are in a whole lot better shape...for now....when they get really bad they move to east van......

As I've alluded to with the underground crime in Victoria it's every where....I've seen it in the nices little villages on the penninsula...I've seen it in the most heavily populated places.....

My daughter has had her bike stolen right from under our kitchen window in Surrey during the night. We've had a friend walk in the door in Victoria. Asked how she got here so fast. She says her bike. We say "where is it now' she says outside. We suggest she bring it in the house....she goes to get it and it's gone. Took 10 mins.

I find it interesting the crime rates (theft, bank robberies, drug trafficking) all increase during gov't cut backs......I wonder if they'res a connection?

Really? hmmmmm another case of nimby. We all KNOW they need help, Most WANT to help, just don't want them in our neighbourhoods (which, given what crystal meth does to a brain, is fully completely understandable.....)
So....what's Darcy Island being used for these days anyway?

Well it sounds like it might just be the place for a "rehab" then.....

Imagine.......it would be like a zoo. An educational zoo for children....

I can just hear the teachers now explaining to the young children how bad choices can lead to this dismal desperate dying kind of life.....

Call or visit the Canadian Consulate in your country. You will get all the information you could ever want from them, instead of getting a lot of bull from us.

Come on over, don't be put off by crazies.

What is it you want to know? Why are you coming to Canada? I think you mentioned studying art....I would expect that before you make the commitment to come here, you'll need to enroll at the art college of your choice. Then you'll need your student visa.

At what stage are you? Personally, I wouldn't be in any hurry to go to Toronto, in my opinion it's too big, too much smog, too much traffic, too many people. But that's only my opinion, millions seem to love it.

RE: I'M TRAVELLING TO CAN

Yeah, Im never in any hurry to go to Toronto either. The many times I have gone there, it has been under duress of some sort, usually work related. At least the beer went on expense account. Unfortunately I usually had to drink that beer in some smaltzy corporate bar in whatever over-priced hotel they had me sequestered in. The kind of places where the men all wear ties and the women behave themselves. That's no way to drink beer.

There are art colleges there though...fine art, dull art, rock art...whatever.
