Just wanted to shout out to all the Ontario members on the forum.

Greetings from the Eastern end of the GTA. I have lived in this province all my life, mostly in Durham Region with 4 years in Kingston when I was at school.

I used to think Ontario was really great, but as I've had the chance to travel to other provinces and American states, I realize that Ontario isn't as great as I thought and that it is really boring.

Ontario lacks identity, it lacks culture. How many folks really think of themselves as Ontarian? We collectively have no sense of belonging like those folks in other provinces. Perhaps our population is too large, diverse and spread out?

I'm not totally down on Ontario, although living here, especially in the GTA can be trying. It seems that Ontario always misses the boat, we are always two minutes too late for everything (Especially in Toronto).

especially since the people from BC think we're all arrogant self-centred people out here at the centre of the universe  :)

I would say this perception only applies to Toronto and rightfully so.

Careful now! Where is this "Whitby" you are from, anyways. Just kidding, I live in Pickering, work in T.O., so we're practically neighbours.

I've had a sad Durham existence up untill this point. Born in Ajax, raised in Pickering and now bought a house in Whitby.

To be honest, I've enjoyed living in Durham, although she is a changing. I fear she will be like the dreaded "West End" in a few years.

I think I have the right to post here :p My mother was visiting her mother in Ontario when I decided to make my entrance on the planet. My stay in ontario was brief, still, because I was born there, and have to get a birth certificate from thunder bay ontario 8O I should be able to post in both ontario and british columbia.

The only difference between ontario and british columbia is your concept of the universe :p Ontario is $$$$$$$$ and BC is $$ :flower: :flower: :sunny: Hopefully you accept this in the jest that I mean it in :p

And what whining would that be?

You would have to be deaf to not hear it.

Whining that our tax dollars go to supporting northern Ontario,

Doesn't Northern Ontario have a separation movement to halve the province so Toronto will quit telling them how to run their affairs? I'm sure if TO pulled the funding, they would then have to stop telling NO how to live, and that isn't what TO wants....there’s to may self righteous ppl living TO, and to many hunters with guns in NO who need to become more "progressive", you know, turn in your guns and don't hunt bears and your harming the fish with hooks and oh my the tree's and yadah yadah yadah....

Torontonians sure don’t have any problem buying up the land in NO though, and putting up huge cottages and driving the land value up (and therefore the taxes) and ensuring the cash strapped people who are born and raised there can’t afford to live there any more.

Welcome to it. Its called life in Canada ( and PS, It's Toronto's fault that we are over taxed, to them "progressiveness" is heavy taxation)

Sorry but that’s the way it is.

Wow, everyone wants to separate. Northern Ontario couldn't survive on its own. Perhaps it could, but the standard of living would be very different. I understand their gripe; Ontario would give the North more control of its own affairs.

Just curious, but where does the boarder between Southern and Northern Ontario lie?

Ontario had a money maker in Hwy 407 or which ever highway is a toll. The govt was allowed to sell it for a short term, look good, aren't we wonderful scenario with absoluytely no consequences. Just think of the dollars it could be raking in!!

The didn't just sell it! They sold it to a foreign multi national corp. The money made doesn't improve our roads, it doesn't even stay here. :banghead:

I'm not sure exactly. The federal government used to own much of Northern Ontario, it then gave the territorial land to the province. I would suppose that the line that used to exist would be a place to start.

Northern Ontario could survive, as all resilient people can. It does have huge forests and minerals, and tourism. I don't recommend it however. My recommendation would be for TO to worry about its own problems.

But it is a great road. I love taking it when I travell through the province. It usaully shaves a 1/2Hr off of my 6-7 hour drive.

I'll be happy when they finish it to Hwy 115/35 and put in those eastern 401-407 links.

Toronto needed the road, but it is still chaos in the morning and evennings. Whoever stopped the Spadina & Scarborough expressways was an idiot.

I waste so much of my life sitting in traffic.

RE: Hello fellow Ontarian

So am I, Das. It says "SPAM!" so she would have been advertising something, likely in more than one post. I'm guessing it wasn't Ontario's Wonderland either. Likely a sex site by her name, but I really don't remember.

I'm glad they sold it. The government has no business being in business. They are utterly incompetent at all that they do. I do think that either we negotiated a very bad deal, or someone's palms got greased.
