Haitian Farmers Commit to Burning Monsanto Hybrid Seeds

“A new earthquake” is what peasant farmer leader Chavannes Jean-Baptiste of the Peasant Movement of Papay (MPP) called the news that Monsanto will be donating 60,000 seed sacks (475 tons) of hybrid corn seeds and vegetable seeds, some of them treated with highly toxic pesticides. The MPP has committed to burning Monsanto’s seeds, and has called for a march to protest the corporation’s presence in Haiti on June 4, for World Environment Day.

Monsanto crops are heavily fertilizer and herbicide dependant and pretty much deplete natural soils within 2 years. They aren't worth it.

Not to mention that the farmers will be locked into buying Monsanto pesticides and herbicides which would make them poorer in the end.

It's a backhanded way of getting yet more aid from the western countries who feel so bad because Haiti is so poor.

Note that I'm not denying Monsanto are the devil incarnate-they are the lowest kind of corporate swine extant in this or any other universe.

This reminds me of the Chinese dumping the Brit's opium into the harbour and starting the opium wars. Unfortunately China lost. The Yanks, however, did win at the Boston Tea Party, so perhaps there is hope for the Haitians. Monsanto should go to hell from wence they came.
