My kitchen and bedroom window are frozen open, does that count? The snow is leaning over, hanging down from the eavestrough. It's so white that the jack rabbits are like sillouettes in the snowy world.

Funny you should mention the windows, Ariadne, my sister just had to practically dislocate her shoulder to pull her window closed just now (as it was frozen open). On the upside, it's no longer snowing around here; on the downside, it is COLD, and the roads are extremely icy.

When they're frozen shut, I leave them. I put the cutting board over part of the kitchen window during the day to cut draft, but the best part is breathing in the fresh, cold air. Roads here are snow pack on ice base ... slick ... gotta turn into the skid ... something newcomers never learned ... so wicked road conditions.

I shoveled another six inches of the damn white stuff this morning and it is still snowing. It is almost time to use the old Nanaimo trick of just ignoring it because it is going to rain eventually. Hell, if we get a foot of snow I can still drive out of my driveway and get back in...:smile:

It's been snowing off and on for a week in Calgary. It's pretty and festive and all that until the usual 25 minute drive to work turns into an hour and a half...such is life in southern AB. Heading up to +3 by the weekend though

By Wednesday or Thursday we are going to have three or four days of rain and with any luck that should take care of any most of the snow. We kind of got spoiled last year when we missed the snow entirely in our neck of the woods.

Just keep an eye on that Nanaimo River or you could end up down by Harmac Mill.

I got up to make coffee at 6 this morning and my kitchen sink tap is ... frozen. I think this is probably not a good thing, so I'm boiling water to pour down the drain. The kitchen window is still frozen open - about 6 inches - and it was about -33 last night ... but this has never happened in the 11 years I've been here.

If it is your tap that is frozen, putting hot water down the drain won't help. A frozen pipe could split so I suggest you turn off the water and use a hair dryer to warm it up.

I don't have a hair dryer. What do you mean - split? I was hoping that by pouring hot water down the drain it would warm everything up a little and hopefully prevent a burst pipe. Are you saying this might be the wrong thing altogether?

I doubt you would get enough heat transfer from the drain to the water pipe to thaw out a frozen pipe. Frozen water pipes could split so I would turn off the water because if it splits it will leak once it thaws.

.There may be a valve under the sink. Can you borrow a hair dryer from a neighbor?

This is not good ... there's a bit of water in the cupboard under the sink. Hmmmm, this would be one of those very rare days where I might feel like swearing first thing in the morning.
