Harper no-show at Games an error, Chrétien says

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has risked relations with China by failing to attend the Olympic Games and going overboard in honouring Tibet's Dalai Lama, former prime minister Jean Chrétien said yesterday.

Speaking to a Canadian Bar Association gathering, Mr. Chrétien said the missteps are indicative of a government that naively fails to understand the enormous strides the Chinese regime has made in recent years, and that China has a long "collective memory" when it comes to international slights.

"There are always consequences in what you do," he said. "If you think that attacking them would be positive, what do you gain?

It is the second-biggest economy in the world, and in 50 years, it will be the biggest economy. Suddenly, you break the bridge. It would be so easy to be there [at the Olympics]."

Mr. Chrétien said Canada has to keep in mind that it is too small a global player to hector the Chinese or try to hurt them with boycotts.

"We have to live with reality," he said. "It's 1.3 billion people, and I'm telling you that they are moving fast.

You think that Canada is very important in the world? I remember when I was going to China … the press saying: 'Mr. Chrétien, you have to tell the president of China to do this and do that.' Oh really?

"You want me to the tell the president of a country of 1.3 billion people you should do this and do that, but I don't dare to say what to do to the premier of Sask.? You have to put things in perspective."
.........
In another apparent swipe at Mr. Harper, Mr. Chrétien named every federal leader going back to prime minister Lester Pearson and said their attitude toward the United States and its international policy had been "independent."
"We did not pass as the newest little dog of the United States," he said.:lol:

His "little dog" side-kick is priceless!
Perhaps nobody told him that poor Mr. Harper used to suffer from childhood asthma and worries he won't be able to tolerate the Beijing air.
Otherwise, I feel Chretien puts his finger right on the sore spots.
I wish we could have him back as PM!

He had some good points,

If it isn't his business to lecture the premier of Saskatchewan, why is it his business to lecture China?

Chretien could at least balance the budget. Something the Tories have trouble with...

LOL, thats a lame response even for you, soc. As it happens he stood up for his principles. The Cretin can go @%#^ himself.

Risuss, you and I have established a civil bond regardless of our political admirations,
I don’t hate Harper as human being, I do despise the man as a politician, the man has 0 charisma equal to Dion’s and his principals are self serving. Comparing Harper as a politician of the PM Marque caliper, the man is way back in the line up of hopefuls wanting to be the # man with a majority mandate for the top job in Canada. He is a dreamer and he is on a dream very difficult to figure out, why? Because he believes transparency takes place behind closed secure doors……….. This is why the Conservatives were given a minority chance and the past 2 ½years they can not go past 34%, is that say anything? Of course it does……..
So I don’t buy the story lets go kill in Afghanistan so we can show we are brave and orderly human beings, if anything we are going in the center of the **** list. I may have gone abrasive with Wally, but he knows the name calling we should all stop……… ;-)

I wonder what the response on this forum would be if Harper did go to China? "bushes lapdog, lockstep with Bush,Bush'es puppet, etc." Harper could walk on water and many on this site would criticize him for not being able to swim.

What do you mean principles? Haven't you read the article where Harper just sent Emerson to China to kiss asz? Not a human rights peep out of Harper since.

Also that same time he criticized China he tried to convince us that free trade with Columbia is a good thing. Then he passes reasons which could ironically be argued for China which has made even greater progress for it's citizenry. As though there were no double standard.

Oh and all that criticizing happened on his plane as it sat on the tar mack after the Chinese got word he would use a meeting with them to act like a hero playing local politics on the international stage. They didn't go for it and he looked like an idiot stuck in his plane having to answer for the postponement of his meeting to all the journalists ready to eat him alive.

I guess it works. Look at his supporters here. They eat this garbage all up and ask for seconds. Yeah, and I got a Montreal bridge to sell you.

Very simple, Harper did not show up in China because he is shy for not having any balls……..
That could very well be, because he criticized the Chinese on their human rights violations."Prime Minister Stephen Harper says his government will not abandon "important Canadian values" by toning down criticisms of China's human rights record to improve trade relations with Beijing."
We were also very slow in sending aid during the terrible earthquake, but recently we have made up our slack and sent some 30 million, matching private donations.
