Gonzo,

Your assertion that "everything is great in Holland" is a bunch of hewey. On what criteria do you base this fact on??

The reason I used slavery was that you seem to imply that since SSM was legal in a foreign land that it should be legal here. It isn't that simple. And btw, many Sudanese do believe that slavery works just fine.

There's nothing wrong with looking at european countries and seeing what works.

YOu mean like looking at the privatization of health care in Sweden that is going so well???

Was Victoria, now Ottawa
When did I say everything is great in Holland? I said that there have been no problems with gay marriage there. Gay marriage is about human rights. Canada respects human rights. So then why would we look at countries that have slaves and legalize that? I dont buy into that argument. Canada has based it's system of government on Britain. Britain used to have serfs (slaves) yet we dont. Our society is always changing. You cant be afraid to make changes. Society will change whether you like it or not. It's a matter of making sure our changes work and peoples rights are upheld, like what legalizing gay marriage will do.

Gonzo,

Slavery is also alive and well in Sudan and noone seems to have a problem with it. Should that mean that we should look at bringing it here too???

What you think slavery is wrong!! Well, remember keep your morality to yourself, whatever arrangement two individuals make between themselves is their business and none of ours. Right??

Heh, yeah, because slavery is so consentual, right?

Seriously, tibear. You CAN'T fairly bring issues like slavery into this, when same sex marriage is purely an issue of consenting adultd engaging in victimless actions. You're right that we can't justify something because "other countries are doing it" - but only when we are comparing apples to oranges, unlike in this case when we are comparing legalized SSM in Holland to legalized SSM in Canada. Both involve consenting adults, unlike comparing slavery to SSM.

Unless, of course, you'd care to try to build an argument as to why legalized SSM would create victims, directly or indriectly...I'd love to hear you try that, thus far I have heard nothing but religious rhetoric from SSM opponents and nonsensical ramblings about "morality".
