Happy CANADA DAY to all Canadians......Hope everyone has a terrific weekend. (and takes a moment ( between parties and BBQ's to reflect on being fortunate to live where we do-----it is far from "perfect" but perfection is an unrealistic objective anyhow. )

enjoy the moment, enjoy the weekend. :canada:

Was Victoria, now Ottawa
Of course they're calling for rain here in Ottawa (every weekend for the past three weeks so far), but I'm going to party anyway. HAPPY CANADA DAY. We got the original flag back! They're going to display it in Ottawa today. Flew it express from France.

Saw some Snow Birds yesterday, none yet today so far. No rain to speak of either - wohoo!

I cannot for the life of me understand why some people from Quebec don't even consider celebrating Canada Day. If not unpatriotic it is incredibly rude.

Some of them do celebrate Canada Day, ITN. Many consider themselves to be a separate nation though, and there is a perception (with some pretty good reasons behind it) that Canada has been somewhat of an oppressor over the history of Quebec.

I don't like it much, but I do understand the reasons behind it.

It's the beginning of a long July 4th weekend here. I'll avoid some of the more self-congradulatory nationalistic events. They've become pretty bad since the beginning of the war. Senora Polaca and I will be babysitting grandkids anyway.

well, we already have the st-jean-baptiste just a week before, the moving day also take a lot of time for a lot of us (day that was set by the liberal governement in 1974 by the way).

and like Blair said, english canada is often see as opressor around here (i've read the English canadian black book this week and it doesnt give you the mood to celebrate...). this week we had a poll that show that people prefer a gay prime minister or a women prime minister rather than an english prime minister.

Beside quebec have always been low on symbolic. except on june 24 you dont see quebec flag on houses, like you see canadian flag near the border for exemple... beside this year our funds was cut for this and small towns dont organise anything for that day (most of them dont have a canda flag anyway  )

Ah, it's Canada Day. I checked the front lawn and it hasn't gone to seed yet, so I don't have to mow (no I'm not lazy, I have real reasons for that). I checked the firewood and there's plenty, so we can have a fire tonight. There's beer in the fridge. There's more beer at the beer store. The neighbour's cats are living in my truck. The neighbour's kids seem to be gearing up for another party, so they'll likely be using my other truck for their mating rituals again.

Things are good. Think I'll have a beer.

on June 24, la dia del San Juan Bautista, was the day my wife and her siblings could finally play in the irrigation ditches. They weren't holy until then.

When I was a kid we had to get the ditches cut before a certain date or we couldn't keep the hay. I got baptised a few times doing that.

No, the 1st of July is. Almost all rental contracts (Appartements) and housing transfers (Sold your house, time to get out) ends the 30th. So everyone moves the 1st. Been like that since the 70's. Wasnt the PQ that set it as such, was the liberals that set the date.

Even though the PQ government made our National Birthday Officially on the 24th, our ancesters have been celebrating it since they arrived here. Was Canadian day under the french regime. Then French-Canadian day under the british. Then National Québec Day since the 80's.

it's not only people from Quebec that don't "celebrate" or sensationalize this day. Patriotism as defined in the US is not something that CA puts much emphasis on. The fact remains, that we all love where we live, we do care for our country and don't feel the need to sensationalize it , the way the US does. Canadians don't have to go around pumping their chests, waving flags and singing "patriotic" songs to prove a point. What is felt in CA is much deeper and meaningful. Symbolism is superficial anyhow.--and for the most part meaningless.

furthermore if some don't "celebrate" the day......so what. They are free to do as they wish. It is their freedom of choice that is respected , not their "patriotism" on demand. a very different mindset here.

Quebec has a unique and colorful flavor to it . It has a unique culture , and its being a part of the Canada is treasured......for what it is. ( although some fanatics will argue that ) Going to Quebec is like having a cultural immersion......and a terrific learning experience that broadens one's horizens to the "world out there". As it should be.
