Guns and a Crappy Sense of Humour

I've been saying for years to anybody who would listen, that a big problem in America lies in their sense of humour and the lack of self-deprecation it entails.

Brits and Canadians have the ability to laugh at ourselves on a daily basis. American humour is all 'in your face'...'at ya'...etc.

Add guns around every corner, and you have a toxic mix of a grumpy, armed populace who can't take a joke.

I will say that any criticism of the US is regarded as semi-treasonous by many - the current President especially - even if it comes from other Americans. It rather tends to stifle intelligent debate.

I'm not being hateful or bigoted.

I'm simply exploring the relationship between humour and violence in America. If that went over your head, Walter...well...I'm not going to apologize for that.

We have civil rights courts here in Canada , and they do not take humour lightly . Remember the comedian in Victoria getting hauled before the tribunal for making off colour jokes .

My thread title could have been a little more tactful, I'll admit that.

But don't get me wrong, I love our neighbours to the South. Just thought I'd shine a light on an area that seems to get overlooked when assessing violence and the reasons and motives behind it.

Lots of brown guys out here have been involved in shootings . Does that count ?
