Greta Thunberg defiant after Swedish court fines her for disobeying police

MALMO, Sweden — Hours after a Swedish court fined Greta Thunberg for disobeying police during an environmental protest at an oil facility last month, the climate activist once again attempted to block access to the facility and was removed by police.

Earlier on Monday, Thunberg, 20, admitted to the facts but denied guilt, saying the fight against the fossil fuel industry was a form of self-defense due to the existential and global threat of the climate crisis.

“We cannot save the world by playing by the rules,” she told journalists after hearing the verdict, vowing she would “definitely not” back down.

The court rejected her argument and fined her 2,500 kronor (about $240).

Charges were brought against Thunberg and several other youth activists from the Reclaim the Future movement for refusing a police order to disperse after blocking road access to an oil terminal in the southern Swedish city of Malmo on June 19.

“If the court sees our actions of self-defense as a crime, that’s how it is,” said Irma Kjellstrom, a spokesperson for Reclaim the Future who was also present at the June protest. She added that activists “have to be exactly where the harm is being done.”

The sentencing appeared to have little effect on the youths’ determination — Thunberg and Reclaim the Future activists returned to the oil terminal in the afternoon to stage to another roadblock and were eventually removed by police.
She's becoming mentally ill I think (or maybe she always was???)

She’s known to have Asperger’s syndrome, OCD, and selective mutism, admitted as much in a Tedx talk. Make of that what you will. I’ve never been sure how seriously to take someone with such anxiety disorders, and she was only 15 years old when she started her activism. I’ve never met a 15 year old who had a good grip on reality, and now at 20 she’s in it up to her eyeballs and has become a vested interest herself.

Like Natalya Gorbanevskaya.
Sentenced by a Soviet-era legal process to confinement in a psychiatric hospital for protesting certain actions of the Soviet government? She was probably perfectly sane. But you’re subtle and no stranger to irony, maybe that was your point?

Climate activist Greta Thunberg fined again for protest in Sweden

STOCKHOLM — A Swedish court on Wednesday fined climate activist Greta Thunberg once again for disobeying police during an environmental protest in July in southern Sweden.

The Malmo District Court ordered her to pay a 2,250 kroner ($206) fine.

Thunberg, who already had been fined for a similar offense, took part in a July 24 environmental protest at an oil terminal in Malmo, where activists temporarily blocked access to the facility by sitting down and were removed by police.

On Sept. 15, she was charged with disobedience to law enforcement for refusing to obey police asking her to leave the scene. She then was dragged away by two uniformed officers.

Thunberg, 20, has admitted to the facts but denied guilt, saying the fight against the fossil fuel industry was a form of self-defense due to the existential and global threat of the climate crisis.

“We have the science on our side and we have morality on our side. Nothing in the world can change that and so it is. I am ready to act based on the conditions that exist and whether it leads to more sentences,” she said after the verdict.

On June 24, the same court fined her 2,500 kronor (about $230) for refusing to obey police orders when taking part in a similar demonstration the previous month where she and others blocked access to the same oil terminal days earlier and were removed by police.

On Thursday, the Swede is due to travel to neighboring Norway to take part in a protest with activists, including Indigenous Sami. They’re protesting a wind farm of 151 turbines and want it removed because they say it endangers the reindeer herders’ way of life. The activists say a transition to green energy shouldn’t come at the expense of the rights of Indigenous people.

Two years ago, Norway’s Supreme Court ruled that the construction of the turbines had violated the rights of the Sami, who have used the land for reindeer for centuries. The Norwegian government has no plans to remove the wind farm.

Thunberg inspired a global youth movement demanding stronger efforts to fight climate change after staging weekly protests outside the Swedish Parliament starting in 2018.

Ah heck, the fine is too low. I'm sure she has more money than god at this point so she could probably afford 100x that amount. It would then be worthwhile fining her & using those funds for something the citizenship could use.

Greta Thunberg among climate activists detained at London protest to disrupt oil executives' forum

LONDON — Greta Thunberg was detained by British police on Tuesday alongside other climate activists who gathered outside a central London hotel to disrupt a major oil and gas industry conference.

Thunberg was among dozens of protesters who chanted “oily money out” and sought to block access to the luxury InterContinental Hotel on Park Lane, which is hosting the Energy Intelligence Forum. The conference features speakers including the chief executives of Shell, Saudi Arabia’s Aramco and Norway’s Equinor, as well as the U.K.’s energy security minister.

An Associated Press photographer saw officers speaking with Thunberg before leading her away and taking her into a police vehicle.

Protesters attempted to block access to the conference venue by sitting on the sidewalk by the entrance. They held aloft banners and chanted “oily money out” and “cancel the conference,” while some lit yellow and pink smoke flares.

Two Greenpeace activists abseiled down from the roof of the hotel to unfurl a giant banner reading “Make Big Oil Pay.”

London’s Metropolitan Police said that six people were initially arrested on suspicion of obstructing a highway during the protest. The force said a further 14 were detained on suspicion of disrupting public order, and one other person was detained for criminal damage.

Police said they engaged in conversations with the protesters on allowing people to access the venue safely and prevent serious disruption to the hotel and guests, but some of the activists refused to move from the road.

No charges have been issued yet.

‘We were linking arms when the police forced their way in and singled out Greta. She was dragged down the street at speed to a police van where they refused to say where she was being taken,“ said Joanna Warrington, an organizer with Fossil Free London who was at the demonstration.

The protesters accuse fossil fuel companies of deliberately slowing the global energy transition to renewables in order to make more profit.

“The world is drowning in fossil fuels. Our hopes and dreams and lives are being washed away by a flood of greenwashing and lies,” Thunberg told reporters before she was detained. “It has been clear for decades that the fossil fuel industries were well aware of the consequences of their business models, and yet they have done nothing.”

“We cannot let this continue. The elite of the oil and money conference, they have no intention of transition,” she added. “We have no other option but to put our bodies outside this conference and to physically disrupt. And we have to do that every time, we have to continue showing them that they are not going to get away with this.”

Police said those detained were taken into custody and that officers remained on site.

Environmental groups say they will continue to protest throughout the planned forum, which is expected to last three days.

Thunberg inspired a global youth movement demanding stronger efforts to fight climate change after staging weekly protests outside the Swedish Parliament starting in 2018. She was recently fined by a Swedish court for disobeying police during an environmental protest in Sweden.

Greta Thunberg removes 'anti-Semitic' X post as people ask 'how dare' she?

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has removed this picture from her social media accounts citing concerns it was unknowingly hurtful toward Jewish people. In a new post the sign remained but the stuffed animal did not.
How dare she?

Greta Thunberg may have removed the “anti-Semitic” stuffed Octopus from her pro-Palestinian X post but those eight tentacles are now pointing right back at her and sticking.

This story not only has legs but eight legs.

“It has come to my knowledge that the stuffed animal shown in my earlier post can be interpreted as a symbol for anti-Semitism, which I was completely unaware of,” the 20-year-old Swedish climate protester wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The damage is done. Some things are hard to take back. One look online at the Holocaust Encyclopedia and it’s clear that an octopus is a trope and smear that depicts Jews as using their long arms to control the world.

And she just happened to choose this time to post one on a chair over her shoulder? Thunberg has plenty to say about other people including in her famous 2019 United Nations “how dare you” speech in which she questioned the motives of much of the world.

Now it’s her time to do some explaining and that is what she was trying to do Friday.

“The toy in the picture is a tool often used by autistic people as a way to communicate feelings,” Thunberg claimed.

In looking through photographs online and in Toronto Sun files, we did not find one other of her with an octopus or any other stuffed animal. This one may be scrubbed as well since she put up a new photo with the stuffed animal edited out.

“We are of course against any type of discrimination and condemn anti-Semitism in all forms and shapes,” wrote Thunberg. “This is non-negotiable. That is why I deleted the last post.”

Thunberg may have also deleted the post because it was a gross stereotype of Jewish people during a period of history in which they are down and feel they are being subjected to a second holocaust.

B’nai Brith Canada appreciated Thunberg responding to the pointed-out concerns.

“We applaud Greta removing the image in question and issuing a clear apology,” B’nai Brith Canada CEO Michael Mostyn said. “At such a perilous time for the Jewish people, no messaging that negates the fact that Jews were the victims of Hamas terror can be tolerated.”

What Thunberg did not delete, however, is the photograph of her, posed with friends, holding a sign which states “Stand with Gaza.” That is offensive to many as well since she is primarily known as a person who protests climate change issues and not siding with terrorists responsible for the slaughter of innocent people.

This is a new kind of political stand for the climate activist. Thunberg’s war time ‘stand with Gaza’ message comes at a time when there are close to 200 hostages, many of them young women like herself, being held by Hamas, who on Oct. 7 raped and murdered many in a slaughter now being reported as high as 1,400 victims.

“Today we strike in solidarity with Palestine and Gaza,” Thunberg wrote in her original tweet. “The world needs to speak up and call for an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for Palestinians and all civilians affected. #FreePalestine #IStandWithPalestine #StandWithGaza #FridaysForFuture.”

Thunberg did not mention the hostages, many of whom are Jewish. What she did add in a third tweet are links to seven organizations that fill their social media accounts with anti-Israel messages and spin. Free to take any position she chooses, perhaps Thunberg could, however, go back and listen to the performance that made her famous in which she said, “The eyes of all future generations are upon you” and “If you choose to fail us, ‘I say’ we will never forgive you.”

Four years later, Thunberg, who will be 21 on Jan. 3, has taken up the side against Israel. With the kind of blood that was spilled Oct. 7, there is one question to Thunberg that has to be asked:

“How dare you.”

A pro-Palestinian social media posting by Greta Thunberg brought about a swift and angry response from Israel.

The Swedish climate activist posted on Friday her support for “freedom for Palestinians.”

“The world needs to speak up and call for an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for Palestinians and all civilians affected,” the 20-year-old posted to X, formerly known as Twitter.

Israel fired back on its X account about an hour later.

“.@GretaThunberg, Hamas doesn’t use sustainable materials for their rockets, which have BUTCHERED innocent Israelis. The victims of the Hamas massacre could have been your friends. Speak up,” Israel posted.

Thunberg’s post included a picture of her with other activists with signs that read, “Free Palestine,” “Climate Justice Now,” “This Jew Stands With Palestine” and “Stand With Gaza.”

Thunberg, who was arrested at an energy protest in London last week, said she and her activists “are of course against any type of discrimination, and condemn anti-Semitism in all forms and shapes.”

Thunberg is a Jewish name.

No, it isn't.

Thunberg is a Swedish name deriving from the Swedish "thun" ("grassy yard") and "berg" ("mountain").

Basically, if you could speak her language (and it's not that difficult to learn with Swedish being so closely related to English) then her surname would translate as "grassy yard mountain".
