A market has been hit by the IAF causing widespread death of civilians, children.
YouTube and Reditt banned this video. It can be downloaded here:
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

CBC has been made aware of this video.
This video is spreading like wildfires on the Internet, yet no one has reported this story. I just don't see how can a civilized person support israel after seeing this video!

Pretty horrific. The target was a market. Many of the victims are women and children. Body parts and dying people all over the place.

I can understand why it was yanked off youtube. Its too graphic. But for those of you who believe Israel is justified killing Gazans, then you are obligated to take a look to see what you support:

Here is another link which doesn't require special software.

Terrible thing.

Were those rockets? I noticed quite a number of soldiers with them among the dead and wounded.

Apparently Israel bombed a street market. I saw soldiers among the dead and dying, but also many children and bicycles. But I never saw any rockets. Doesn't mean they weren't there. But given the high number of apparent civilian caualties, I doubt it was a rocket launch site.

Basically Israel targets anyone with a firearm, regardless of who is nearby. One of Israel's first targets during the first wave of bombs was a police academy during a graduation ceremony. There weren't any rockets and no one has accused the police of firing rockets. But they are described as "armed militants" rather than civilians.

No doubt women and children have been killed along with armed militants.

A lot of green flags, armbands and hats in that crowd. A lot of armed people as well. It's terrible that Hamas continue to hide among civilians and put them at such grave risk as to result in such a horrible tragedy. The palestinians have to rise up against Hamas. This is absolutely terrible.

Lithp, your expectations are a little unrealistic.

Gaza is 40 km long by 9 km wide and inhabited by 1.5 million people. About half the size of Toronto and more densely populated. Its surrounded by walls, guard towers and razor wire. The people have nowhere to run or hide.

Hamas has about 6000 regulars and tens of thousands of supporters and sympathizers. Lets assume they have 20,000 armed militants total. How would you deploy 20,000 soldiers in Toronto and yet not have nay of your soldiers "hiding" amongst civilians?

Consider also that in order for Hamas to have a chance against a better equipped adversary, they must fight an assymetrical guerilla war.

Civilian casualties were inevitable as soon as this became a shooting war. So the question is who is responsible for turning this into a shooting war?

Six months ago Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire. In exchange for Hamas not to firing rockets at Israel, Israel promised not to attack Hamas and allow the free flow of food, medicine and other humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.

The news regarding this conflict is about as accurate as news was about Iraq's WMD stockpiles and links to al Qaeda.

The authority about what's going on in Gaza are the UN observers. They are more objective that the pro-Israeli media. Listen to UN Observer Karen Abuzayd's answer to a leading question about Hamas being responible for Israel's decision to bomb Gaza:
YouTube - NO! Hamas is NOT to Blame! Karen Abuzayd United Nations (Short Version) (REQUEST)

Here is a summary of her answer:
UN official says Israel attacked during lull
By EDITH M. LEDERER – 4 days ago

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Palestinians in Gaza believed Israel had called a 48-hour "lull" in retaliatory attacks with Hamas when Israeli warplanes launched a massive bombardment of militant installations in the Gaza Strip, a U.N. official said Monday.

Karen Abu Zayd, commissioner of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) which helps Palestinian refugees, raised the possible violation of an informal truce in a video press conference with U.N. reporters from her base in Gaza.

Israel's U.N. Mission referred any comment on the reported lull to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office in Jerusalem. Olmert's office did not answer telephone calls for comment early Tuesday morning.
Abu Zayd said Palestinians in Gaza were surprised when Israeli warplanes sent more than 100 tons of bombs crashing down on key security installations in Hamas-ruled Gaza starting Saturday morning because it was in the middle of the lull.

The offensive began eight days after a six-month truce between Israel and the militants expired. During that time, the Israeli army said Palestinian militants fired some 300 rockets and mortars at Israeli targets, and 10 times that number over the past year.
Israel had sent mixed signals on Friday regarding its plans for Gaza. Israeli defense officials said politicians had approved a large-scale incursion into the territory. But at the same time, Israel appeared open to international pressure against an invasion, prying open its border with Gaza to allow deliveries of humanitarian aid.

"What we understood here (was) that there was a 48-hour lull to be called, and this was called by the Israelis," Abu Zayd said. "They said they would wait 48 hours. That was on Friday morning, I believe, until Sunday morning, and that they were going to evaluate."

"There was only one rocket that went out on Friday, so it was obvious that Hamas was trying, again, to observe that truce to get this back under control," she said.

"Then, everything got loose on Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. We were all at work and very much surprised by this," Abu Zayd said.
When the Israeli offensive began, neither Defense Minister Ehud Barak nor Prime Minister Ehud Olmert made any mention of a lull.
Abu Zayd mentioned the lull when she was asked whether the population of Gaza was aware "that this was all commenced by the Hamas government unilaterally ending the cease-fire and firing rockets."

"I don't think they think the truce was violated first by Hamas," she said.

"I think they saw that Hamas had observed the truce quite strictly for almost six months, certainly for four of the six months, and that they got nothing in turn — because there was to be kind of a deal," Abu Zayd said.

"If there were no rockets, the crossings would be opened," she said. "The crossings were not opened at all."

The Associated Press: UN official says Israel attacked during lull

Hamas did fire rockets at Israel, but in response to Israeli attacks against Hamas.

Israel was supposed to allow the free flow of humanitarian food and medicine into Gaza, but they never did.

So what was Hamas's motivation to observe a ceasefire where Israel gets to assassinate them and starve Gazans?

Even then, for nearly 48 hours before the start of this raid, Hamas didn't fire any rockets at Israel indicating a willingness to have an informal ceasefire with Israel.

I don't see anything here which supports Israel's decision to turn this into a shooting war.

Consider the facts:
Consider that the US and Israel imposed an embargo on Gaza as soon as Hamas won democratic elections, which they escalated when Hamas defeated the Fatah coup attempt in Gaza.

Consider that the US and Israel armed Fatah in support of a coup attempt against democratically elected Hamas.
The Gaza Bombshell: Politics & Power: vanityfair.com (this is common knowledge in the rest of the world. It just wasn't reported here. BTW, Hamas ended up capturing all the arms the US and Israel sent to Fatah in Gaza.)

Consider that when Fatah failed to take control of Gaza, Israel severely restricted the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza to bare a minimum.
(see above)

Consider that Israel even after Hamas agreed to a ceasefire, Israel still refused to allow the free flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza as per the terms of its ceasefire.
(see above)

What conclusions can you dreaw about Israel concern for the well being of Gaza civilians and respect for ceasefires?

It looks to me like Israel and the US have been plotting to get rid of Hamas since they were elected. When Fatah failed to the dirty work for them, Israel decided to do the dirty deed themselves after a long seige to weaken Hamas first.

At this point does it matter? Israel is better armed than Hamas. Whether they should be or not isn't the point. They are and their neighbours would be wise to accept that fact and deal with it.

Hamas allowing any rockets to be launched into Israel is so stupid that it's amazing to me. Did they think their very militarily powerful neighbour was just going to do nothing about those missiles? They've been shooting them during the truce (less than before but isn't exactly abiding by the terms they'd agreed to) so why would Israel allow the borders to be open? Do you think the US would have any qualms about blowing the crap out of Toronto if it was the launching site for 300 rockets into their country? Of course they wouldn't. It wouldn't matter WHY rockets were being launched. If Palestinians as a whole would accept that reality, they would be a lot better off. Instead Hamas makes all sorts of grand statements and other Arabs use them as a cause celebre to stir up anti-Israeli and anti-American fervor, but no one will ever really make any changes that could make things better for civilians there.

I think you misunderstood my point. Israel gave Hamas a choice: Starve quietly or fight. Israel's actions show it was never interested in a truce which involved Hamas's survival.

Either way a lot of people are going to die.

You are correct. My expectations are quite unrealistic. They are in fact idealistic. I realize it is easy for me to say the things I said above whilst sitting at the security and comfort of my home here in Canada.

But I truly cannot understand why anyone would provoke a vastly more powerful foe irrespective of who broke the truce.

I disagree. If there were no terrorist attacks on Israel coming from Gaza they wouldn't give a damn what happened in that place. BTW, Gaza has another border with Egypt doesn't it? Why can't goods cross that way?

The Zionist monsters will only be satisfied when the final solution is exacted on the Palestinians and that satisfaction will only apply to the total conquest and extermination of Palestinians, then it will be Irans turn and then Syria and then Lebanon and then the rest of the world. Only heartless gutless stupid people could support the vile Zionist monsters and think thier turn won't come. What fools and cowards.

Put yourself in Hamas's situation.

They are four months into a six month truce with Israel. Israel is still starving Gazans in violation of the agreed ceasefire terms. They keep arresting and killing Palestinians in the West Bank. They keep demolishing Palestinians homes, annexing land and expanding their Jewish only settlements on former Palestinian land.

From the UN
Chronological Review of Events Relating to the Question of Palestine

July 2008

...Israeli troops killed an unarmed Palestinian near the border in the southern Gaza Strip, an IDF spokesman said. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed the victim had been one of its members. The head of Gaza emergency services identified the victim as Salim Jumaa al-Hamedi, 18. The death brings to 526 the number of people, nearly all Palestinians, killed since Israeli-Palestinian peace talks resumed in November 2007, according to an AFP count. (AFP)

Palestinians fired two Qassam rockets into Israel's western Negev region, hours after Israeli troops shot to death a Palestinian along the Israel-Gaza border. The rockets struck open areas, causing no injuries or damage. (Haaretz)

Hamas arrested three militants from the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades immediately after they launched rockets at targets in Israel. Following the arrest, senior Hamas spokesman Moussa Abu Marzouk stated that his organization would uphold the ceasefire and attempt to stop the firing of rockets into Israel. (AFP, AP, Ma'an News Agency, Reuters, Ynetnews)

Israeli troops demolished two houses, razed land and arrested seven men in Hebron. (Ma'an News Agency, Reuters)...

...Israel Radio reported that Israel planned to build some 1,800 new homes in two settlements in East Jerusalem. Some 900 homes would be built in the "Har Homa" settlement, and a similar number of new apartments would be built in "Pisgat Ze'ev," the radio said, adding that the Jerusalem municipality's Planning and Construction Committee had given preliminary approval to both projects. (DPA)

Arab States had asked the Security Council to re-declare Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory illegal and condemn new construction in East Jerusalem. Libya, a Council Member and the head of the Arab Group, submitted a draft resolution calling on Israel to immediately stop its settlement expansion in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Zalmay Khalizad, said, "For us, the criteria for an acceptable resolution which can make it to the Council are that it is balanced," and that achievements or setbacks by both sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must be reflected in the draft. (Haaretz)...

If you read this document you will get a much better understanding of this conflict and the level of pro-Israel bias and misinformation in our news:

Relatives mourn a Palestinian killed by the Israeli army as he infiltrated Israel

The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a Palestinian militant group, says three of its members have been detained by the larger rival group Hamas.

The move comes after al-Aqsa militants fired two rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

The detentions are the first since Hamas, which controls Gaza, agreed a ceasefire with Israel last month aimed at easing an Israeli blockade.

The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades has called for the release of its members.

Israeli police said the rockets fired on Wednesday landed in an open area and no-one was hurt.

The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades said it launched the rockets in retaliation for the Israeli army's killing of an unarmed member of the group as he tried to cross the Gaza-Israel border...

A four-month ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza was in jeopardy today after Israeli troops killed six Hamas gunmen in a raid into the territory.

Hamas responded by firing a wave of rockets into southern Israel, although no one was injured. The violence represented the most serious break in a ceasefire agreed in mid-June, yet both sides suggested they wanted to return to atmosphere of calm...

What do you do?

1) Complain to the UN which is powerless to pass punitive measures against Israel due to US veto powers?

2) Complain to the media who ignores you?

3) Fire rockets at Israel?

4) Do nothing and watch Israel kill leaders, starve the general population and continue their rolling annexation?

4) Other? Can you think of something?
