Romney In A 'Cult,' Don't Vote For Him, Pastor Says

The pastor who introduced Texas Gov. Rick Perry at a conservative gathering Friday said rival presidential candidate Mitt Romney is not a Christian and is in a cult because he is a Mormon. Robert Jeffress, the senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Dallas, made similar remarks about Romney when he ran in the 2008 campaign. Event organizers at the Values Voters Summit selected Jeffress to introduce Perry, but the Perry campaign was consulted about the choice and approved Jeffress to introduce the Texas governor.
Jeffress endorsed Perry at the event and introduced him as "a proven leader, a true conservative, and a committed follower of Christ."
After his remarks, Jeffress told reporters that Perry's religion is different from Romney's.
"Rick Perry's a Christian. He's an evangelical Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ,"

Right wingers attacked Obama for associating with a bigot like Wright. It follows that they should feel the same way about Jeffress.

Never mind too all the other ignoramuses out there that believe in a higher being/God/Allah/Buddha and such, you know, because it's their right to believe those things. And perhaps are even the creationist belief arena themselves. My god.

Sister Theresa, The Pope, The Dali Lama, Desmond Tutu, Ghandi. Those sorts of unsavory characters.

And some on the left revere these 'ignoramuses' too. How odd.

Oh but they didn't run for president. So what. They're probably all respected more than any prez was.

Smugness, whether from self-adorned educated intelligentsia or the garden variety redneck goon, is better tempered by a sip of humility and a pinch of open mindedness. Pour over crushed ice and garnish with fresh mint leaves for a refreshingly flamboyant beverage of understanding.

Or not. What do I care.

People had to know this was coming: it happened 4 years ago and as much as we hope people grow, you had to know it was going to resurface.

My wife and I were talking about this the other night (she's an independant, not a party supporter and while she thought she liked McCain more, last time around, the Idea of Vice President Palin scared her away from voting for him... and since, she has lost a lot of respect for him on issues like his opposition to the repeaing of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"). She said she doesn't like the way Bill Maher (whom she likes at times because she he makes/re-states some valid points on many issues) and others concentrate so much on the religious aspect of the Republicans, and I told its because of crap like this. With their mantras of supposed non-interference with others, Republicans sure do like to stick their noses into other peoples' religious beliefs. I can accept that to a degree, as religion often does have ties to the structure of a person's moral values, and thus their character, which is valid in assessing a candidate. Where it bothers me is that the United States has an official stance of separation of Church and State (where Canada just has a "tradition" of trying to stay out of relgion with the "freedom of religion guarantee" buttressing that tradition from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms), so as long as those values are not in opposition, what does the denomination or even the religion matter? I mean are Perry & Co. worried that Romney is going to try and legalize polygamy?
