What kind of following does track and field has? And/or is that an indication of its value? Track and field probably has far more followers than Gilbert and Sullivan.

Indeed cricket is played in Canada; we just don’t have a good team. And cricket used to be played in USA; it used to be a big sport in USA once upon a time. USA used to have very good team too. I think US involvement in cricket ended towards the beginning of 20th century (or it may have been a bit earlier, I don’t recall).

But they used to play cricket in USA. And Gilbert and Sullivan has a small following, it is classical music after all. The fact that you compare track and field with Gilbert and Sullivan tells me that you know track and field does not have much of a following.

And ‘who the hell cares’? If you don’t care about cricket, don’t care about this thread, then what are you doing here? Surely there are plenty of other threads you could participate in.

Cricket is not viewed as a "royal" sport in India, Pakistan, or in the USA. It is regarded as the working man's sport. The few cricketers I knew in Brooklyn were all working class West Indians.

Watched the T20 IPL championship on youtube this morning. CSK > Mumbai by 22 runs (168-5 to 146-9). An exciting match which featured excellent defense by the Super Kings and what may have been an unwise batting order by the Indians - Kieron Pollard was placed late in the batting order where his batting did not impact as much as it would have if he had been batting at the top. A match that was far more exciting than MLB and it was for free unlike other cable or satellite broadcasts!

That was a pretty good match. And camaraderie at the end gives it a pretty grand finale.

It is similar to baseball. I remember reading somewhere that the man who invented baseball got the idea from cricket.

The guys I have known who played love it with greater passion than baseball or softball fans love their sport!

As for today's action in T20, I watched part of the New Zealand victory by 2 wickets over Sri Lanka (139-8 > 135-6) as bowler Lasith Malinga failed to protect a slim lead over the Kiwis going into the final two overs. Nathum McCullum's last second heroics won it with a game winning 6'er.

In the second match, West Indies defeated Ireland by 70 runs (138-9 > 68 AO). While the windies batsmen were not as productive as had been expected, their bowling was superb and dominated the Irish. I was greatly impressed by young Irish bowler George Dockrell -- only 17 years of age! -- as he appears to be headed towards a great career. As batsman, he made the final out for his team but impressed everyone.

Shaun Gayle did not play for the Windies today as his leg was injured in practice. Hopefully, he will be back Monday for the next series. Shiv Chanderpaul was not in top form as he garnered only 19 before his wicket was captured. Hopefully, he will get back in form.


T20 is a format better suited for North American cric fans and I urged you to give it a try!

Pakistan over Bangladesh by 21 runs (172-3 > 151-7) in an exciting match at St Lucia which is not generally known for its cric but which serves as a great venue. Pak's Kamran Akmal + Salman Butt teamed as a partnership for well over 100 runs. Ashraful amassed 65 for Ban but tired or the match would have been closer.

It's getting very exciting!

Two matches in rain soaked Guyana today:

Sri Lanka > Zimbabwe

Windies > England

In both matches the Duckworth-Lewis targetted scoring system was employed because of rain interruptions. Great action but not enough!

Ozmen whip India by 49 runs 184-5 > 135 AO.

Sri Lanka crucified the Windies by 57 runs 195-3 > 138-8.

Windies just didn't come to play today. Their defense stunk to high heaven and there was so sense of leadership or direction in their attack or game plan. Shiv Chanderpaul & Chris Gayle stiffed out at strike. Just an inexcusably pathetic performance.

We have many Indians, Pakistanis, South Africans, Ozmen, and Brits here in the Twinkie Cities, esp in Minneapolis. These folks love their cric. World wide the sport is more popular than baseball and is growing immensely in popularity such as nations like Hungary and Bulgaria.

A score of 200-4 means 200 runs were scored while only 4 wickets were captured. Thus, if the other team had 175-4 (scoring 175 runs while losing 4 wickets) the winning team wins by 25 runs.
