General Motors Canada will be announcing the closure of all operations in Oshawa, Canada on 26 November, multiple anonymous sources told CTV News Toronto. If the report is true, the move will affect at least some 2,500 workers, plus others in related spheres, such as auto parts productions.

The problem with GM vortec engines is the result of rather uneven oil circulation- some areas of cylinder head and valves dont get quite enough oil- which results in LOCALIZED OVERHEATING!


The engine warning lights do not come on because the engine generally is running within heat tolerances- but those nasty little LOCALIZED oil dry spots promote premature stress on cylinder head gaskets which leads to engine oil contaminated with engine coolant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


Oil watered down with engine coolant promotes engine DESTRUCTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


A minor case- such as if the vehicle is driven locally- simply creates loss of compression and power......but a major case- such as a vehicle hauling a heavy load on high way- promotes pistons blowing through oil pan and etc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



This Gm problem compares badly to older Fords which used to need a new engine computer every 100,000 Km!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


With the older Fords- if you were quick- you could run for home if the engine started coughing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



And then it was simply a new plug in of a Ford computer part!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A GM spokesman declined to comment. GM had been expected to close plants because of struggling sales.
Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, said in a prepared statement that it does not have complete details of Monday's announcement, but it has been informed that there is no product allocated to the Oshawa plant past December 2019.

2040 is when electric vehicles are expected to become dominant; not when they are introduced. You should start seeing models in the 2020s and there will be millions by the 2030s. Given the speed at which technology is changing I suspect it could happen even faster than that, especially with a number of mainstream automakers now on board and with continual improvements in electric car range and battery charging times.

Trudeau vows to help get GM workers 'back on their feet' as automaker stands firm on Oshawa closure

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said today the federal government will do what it can to help laid-off GM workers in Oshawa "get back on their feet," while federal Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains said Ottawa stands ready to assist those workers any way it can.
But both federal and provincial governments are signalling there's little they can do now to save a key component of the company's Canadian operations as executives pursue a global shakeup in response to slumping auto sales.
"I talked to the president of GM last night. The first thing I said is, 'What can we do? What do we have to do?'" Ontario Premier Doug Ford told reporters this morning. "And he said, 'The ship has already left the dock.'"
Both Bains and Premier Ford seemed resigned to the plant's closure Monday. When asked if there was anything the federal government could do to convince the Detroit-based automaker to shift production of another vehicle to the factory, Bains said the closure is part of a larger "global restructuring plan" that will see similar facilities in Michigan and Ohio close.
"We're willing to engage and work with them but they've been clear about their position," Bains, the government's lead on the automotive file, told reporters in the foyer of the House of Commons this morning. "We're very, very disappointed with the news ... Personally, I'm very, very hurt by this. To see this plant close is devastating."
GM confirmed Monday it would close its Oshawa plant in 2019, throwing about 3,000 unionized people out of work.
The plant makes the Chevrolet Impala, a once-popular vehicle that has seen its sales crater in recent years as consumer tastes shifted away from small and midsize sedans toward bigger vehicles like pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles.
While Premier Ford said it seems GM can't be convinced at this point to save the plant, federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer said the House of Commons should immediately call an emergency debate to flush out possible options for rescuing the plant.
"This announcement is only a few hours old and I don't want to give up the fight today. I don't want to say, on day one of this announcement, 'OK. That's it,'" Scheer told reporters in Toronto. "Surely to goodness we can find something to point to protect these jobs."
Scheer did not offer any concrete suggestions of his own to help workers now facing unemployment in a year's time.

But the unhappy truth for Durham Region is that it has so little other industry to fall back on!



In most regions around the GTA- about one third of the population leaves their district each day for work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


This is in stark contrast to Durham Region where TWO THIRDS of the population leaves the Region for work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


Residential Property taxes in Durham Region are some of the highest in Ontari-owe- thanks to that general lack of industry to pay extra taxes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
