get a good warranty with that battery. I just returned my cellphone after having it for less than a year because the battery wasn't lasting for 3hrs in safe mode. If that was a car, anybody would be pissed.

Here is a little history of the problems some auto makers have faced:
The writer whining about the `death of Detroit` must be an unemployed auto worker who does not realize Detroit died because they made shitty cars!
Consider the 1965 Ford Falcon……now it DID have good qualities-nice front seat leg room, a solid frame that gave (for those days when seat belts were not available as an option and crash tests were rudimentary) good protection in a crash, had a solid reliable straight 6 cylinder engine and a good sized trunk……BUT…..it was DESIGNED as Fords version of an economy car! As such it was about 40% HEAVIER than a Honda civic or Toyota Corolla and that straight 6 engine was hooked to a two speed automatic transmission (no standard transmission available) so its gas consumption was easily twice that of the competition! Add in a considerably higher purchase price……and Ford eventually moved on to other economy cars like the Pinto (great car but if it got hit from behind the gas tank would rupture and FRY you) and the Maverick-another great car but MUCH higher price and gas consumption than foreign built economy cars…..and Ford sold the Falcon molds and dies etc to their Australian division and the Falcon was produced down under for some years.
Now….too get the FULL PICTURE of how unsuitable the Falcon was as an economy car (in spite of various other virtues it DID have) it was reported in the Toronto Star Wheels section that the car driven by MAD MAX in the movie Road Warrior was a somewhat modified Australian Ford Falcon…….good car…..but….to have that last of the “road ripping V-8 interceptors” as they called it in the movie- compete in economy against a Civic or Corolla? HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Or consider American Motors Corporation-3 companies blended together after Second World War-Hudson Motors, Willies Overland(the Jeep designers) and Studebaker was (I think) the third company. The straight 6 cylinder engines they made were bullet proof…..but the wiring for their Jeeps, Hornets and Gremlins was a nightmare-pieces snatched from whatever was leftover from any other source-if it was built on Tuesday it will have MOPAR solenoid and Ford alternator, Wednesday had GM solenoid and mystery alternator-if it has three prongs then hook it here, if four prongs then hook it there, unless it was built on Friday in which case start all over with all new wire contacts…..and the wiring had so many dis-similar metals (with galvanic action EATING connections) and such corrosion problems that it was common to REWIRE the entire car after a few years on the road as my father in law did with his AMC Hornet! The Hornet went over 200,000 miles at a time when a car with 100,000 miles on it was toast- those old AMC 6 cylinders did NOT QUIT……but the wiring was madness…..so AMC closed its factory on the south side of Danforth Ave west of Victoria Park (it’s a mall and Cdn Tire now…….and sold the Jeep design to Chrysler-the death of Detroit was nothing to do with taxes and EVERYTHING to do with weak designs and HIGH costs…..
As for General Motors- their pickup truck customers formed a “Slipping Transmission Club” in a hopeless effort to get GM to remedy transmission problems!
Gm responded to the transmission problem by resolving some of the issues- but consumer reports suggest that Chevy Silverado continues to have issues!
And GM came out with their Vortec engine which is alleged to have oil circulation and lubrication issues! Apparently some spots around the valves can run dry resulting in micro sized areas of over heating- the engine registers as running at normal temperature- but in fact some small spots and parts are over heated- resulting in strain on the head gaskets and eventual failure of the engine- and the need for a COSTLY REPLACEMENT!
GM is suffering because it does not make cars that the public wants! In Europe- where GM also operates- the most popular cars sold there have 1.5 litre diesel engines and the smallest engine GM makes is a 2.5 litre gasoline engine!
GM suffers in Asia as well! In Japan a car buyer MUST PROVE he has a place to park the machine BEFORE TAKING DELIVERY! Gm cars are simply to BIG and fuel hungry to satisfy an Asian!
Gm is dead for the same reason that Mastadons are dead- because they FAILED TO ADAPT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gm is losing out in every market that it operates in!!!!!!!!!!

Hybrid would be the way to go until the electric side was perfected. A 2 cyl putt-motor so you average 100kph, might not be good for global cooling but at least you aren't stopping every 100km
Factory sealed, have a gas station that can swap them in 5 minutes and send it back to the factory to be fixed.

Curbside Cycle manager Eric Kamphof demonstrates a cargo bike Tuesday. Coun. Mike Layton, who represents Ward 19, Trinity-Spadina, wants the city to look into adding some to its maintenance fleet.
One of council's most enthusiastic cyclists wants staff to look into replacing at least some of the city's maintenance fleet with cargo bikes.
(The guy has to be kidding us right? Use bikes to deliver loads of lumber or bags of concrete to city construction sites? Did we not get enough exposure to how costly everything is at Silly Hall last year when the senior citizen built those stairs in the park for five hundred dollars- and a SHAMED city hall re-did the job for about fifty grand- and that was AFTER thery fudged all the numbers so the original $85 grand estimate would be hidden? And can you imagine how long it would take to get potholes fixed if the trucks were taken away and the guys had to PEDAL to the sites with their tools and asphalt patch?)
Coun. Mike Layton's has put forward a motion that calls on staff to look into the feasibility of adding the bikes to the city's fleet of vehicles, and report back early next year.
(Or maybe the airhead has ideas about using bikes to shuffle papers and library books around down town? And how heavy would a load of books or legal papers be after piling them into a waterproof box? It is raining outside right now and it started suddenly in early afternoon- picture somebody filling out legal papers for property taxes that get caught in the rain while being bicycled to a storage facility! I have a neighbour who filled out a 2 page city form so property taxes would be deducted monthly from his bank account and it took 3 weeks for the city to LOSE half the form- and then blame neighbour for trying to cheat on his taxes! City Hogs lose enough stuff without taking it out in the rain on a bicycle!)
"I think this is a neat idea that we should explore at the city," he said Tuesday. "This can ensure that we get the work done in a way that also contributes to fighting climate change."
He said he envisions maintenance staff using the sturdy vehicles to service the city's parks.
(Uh huh- and maybe our bicycle brain will consider what rate of pay a bicycle courier gets since it is such a SLOW and limited way to haul anything heavy? Would our civil service Hogs give up their prime pay rate in order to tool around the city on a bike for the benefit of the exercise? NOT LIKELY!!!! Putting our Hogs on bikes is just another way to make sure Hogs work SLOWLY!)
"Clear garbage out, perhaps watering plants or doing some of the horticultural work — this is something we could be doing with much smaller vehicles that are much better for the environment and that have less wear and tear on the sod, on the gravel pathways."
(Uh huh- and when they get to the park on their bicycles and find several of the park bins heavily loaded with trash that wont fit in the bike bins then out comes the truck anyway!)
Coun. Mike Layton says the initiative, if it's accepted, could help keep city parks and planters neater.
(No- switching park maintenance away from over privileged union Hogs over to the private sector that employs people who NEED the job and thus have a real work ethic is what will keep parks neater! Along with the occasional cop patrol to catch garbage dumpers!)
(Parks staff are so arrogant they got into a spat with some senior citizens over flowers some years back! The govt decided they could not afford to plant flowers in a certain park any more- so local seniors looking for something to do out in the sunshine- did the job for them- planted a nice basic selection of flowers in the disused beds! And city staff ripped up the flowers! Old farts are NOT ALLOWED to mess with Hog parks! So the seniors explained their position again- that there will be no cost or obligation from the city- and certainly no risk from flowers to the public - the seniors will plant and water and weed as needed! NO GO! Plants ripped out yet again! So a city councillor and union Hog rep got involved and parks staff were told to shut up and back off- seniors replanted for the third time and Hogs wisely ignored their work!)
He also sees them as useful in delivering small freight from one city office to another.
(Oh YES! Lets FIRE all the Hogs driving city trucks and hire bicycle couriers to deliver that small stuff! If it works for the law firm trying to sue people and shipping their papers between offices then surely it is good enough for Silly Hall? But we KNOW the wage issue will cause vicious trouble for Hogs!)
And rather than importing, Layton wants staff to consider using locally sold cargo bikes.
One Toronto company that sells cargo bikes to retailers North America-wide is Curbside Cycle, on Bloor Street near Spadina Avenue. They can carry about 160 kg each, says Eric Kamphof.
Manager Eric Kamphof described the vehicles as "basically a bike with trunk space" and a load capacity of about 160 kg.
(Isnt that nice- and can you hear the union screaming if their members are made to go out on bicycles in rain or cold or snow?)
And he said there's lots of justification for adding them to the city fleet.
"The only constraint is the box size, so this can handle most goods. If you're delivering a refrigerator maybe you want to use a van, but yeah, this could handle a great deal of small cargo loads throughout the city," Kamphof said.
(I suggest Kamphof is blinded by the prospect of govt gravy and does not know or care what the city will haul in his machines!)
"This can go in a bike lane or cut through parked cars. It's going to save a lot of time," he said. "It's also going to save a heck of a lot of lot of money — there are no insurance costs. The price of these units is $3,000 and up, as opposed to a car."
(No- no auto insurance costs but big cost in workers comp if some over the hill Hog has a heart attack while riding a city bike in summer heat? And considering how many cyclists and pedestrians are getting hit on our roads maybe the workers comp costs would be HUGE if a few get run over?)
Electrically assisted cargo bikes can cost up to $10,000, he said. Even so, he said interest from both businesses and families looking for an easy way to transport kids has peaked this year.
(OH LORD! Save me from electrically powered LIE-beral TOYS! If I was 80 years old and not able to drive a real vehicle and had a choice between a taxi or an electric toy I would opt for the relative freedom of the electric toy as its better than nothing- but not by much! )
His company has been importing cargo bikes from Denmark and the Netherlands for about 12 years, and selling them to retailers across North America.
(I have no doubt that cargo bikes are useful in some very crowded old European cities with their streets that were often laid out in medieval times- meaning they are narrow, winding and- in the case of Holland and Denmark- the streets are notably FLAT- no hills- Toronto streets are NOT like that!)
Layton says in his motion that the city could also look into cargo bikes that have solar-powered motors.
"These new vehicles take up less space on the road, cause less congestion, have zero emissions, are able to travel where larger vehicles cannot, and are an educational tool that draws attention to the need to transition to low carbon solutions," the motions states.
(Solar powered bikes now? And just how much BIGGER are they than a regular bike? And can they travel where regular vehicles cannot- with a solar array strapped to them? Is Layton planning to run the things off road some place? The only things that need to drive into the park as a general rule are called lawn mowers! As for solar bikes being an educational tool- well yes- but they will be mostly educating us about the TOOLS running our govt into the ground!)
It goes to the government management committee on Monday, with a staff report expected early next year.

Say your battery is low just before you stop at a long light. the engine fires up so it is running at peak mileage and it is charging the batteries and it fires up when crossing a mountain pass on the uphill and is off on the downhill. Cities with cable cars have power just above so any car/truck could take power and get a bill from the city at the end of the month. The HV arcing would add a bit of O2 to the air as a 'bonus'
it is my understanding that Ford is shutting down their car production to do a massive retooling for new lineups of vehicles. They did a similar thing in the 90s.

The Volt was fine. You know what the issue was? It wasn't 100% emissions-free. It was only 99.xx% emissions-free. They put a little gasoline generator in it to solve many of the issues that straight up EVs have, especially in cold weather.
In fact the Volt has won several awards, including the 2009 Green Car Vision Award, 2011 Green Car of the Year, 2011 North American Car of the Year, 2011 World Green Car, 2012 European Car of the Year, and 2016 Green Car of the Year.
