Special weather statement issued for parts of Vancouver Island
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for parts of Vancouver Island as Arctic air pushes in and temperatures are set to plunge.
According to the weather agency, an area of low pressure will arrive Saturday morning over the province’s south coast. Then on Saturday night, a cold front is expected to bring snow and a strong surge of Arctic air from the B.C. Interior to the south coast. Snow may continue into Sunday.
The surge of Arctic air will then go through the mainland’s valleys and inlets on Sunday. The south coast is expected to see the coldest air of the season. There may be wind warnings for Metro Vancouver, Greater Victoria, Fraser Valley, and Howe Sound on Sunday.
The Arctic air will linger into the next weeks. Daytime highs slightly above freezing are in the forecast and overnight lows could go down to -10 C.
Greater Victoria, the southern Gulf Islands and east Vancouver Island from Courtenay to Campbell River, Duncan to Nanaimo and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay are all under the special weather statement.
