George H.W. Bush touts son Jeb for presidency

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Another President Bush?
Perhaps so, says former U.S. president George H.W. Bush, who has already seen one son, George W., serve in the Oval Office. The 41st president of the United States said Sunday that he would like to see a second son, Jeb, be president one day.

Jeb Bush is the current president's younger brother and a former popular governor of Florida. He is mulling a run for U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla.

Asked in a broadcast interview about Jeb Bush's consideration of the Senate seat, the elder Bush said: "I'd like to see him run. I'd like to see him be president someday."

a "Bushcapade" in the making?

John Ellis "Jeb" Bush is of the opinion the damage he did in Florida as governor was insufficient and thus is planning to run for the U.S. Senate when Mel Martinez gives up his seat, in order to wreak further Bush-based havoc on the rest of the country from Washington, D.C.

Maybe. Supposedly, Jeb hasn't made his mind up yet.

That according to Politico and other political prognosticators.

'Tis a worrisome thing. The Bush brothers come in different wrapping, but the package is the same: ultra-conservative, hard-line Republican chicanery.

Jeb, being the younger brother of George W., is said to be smarter than George. That is yet to be proven, however. As the 43rd governor of Florida, serving two terms, his "smarts" were not much in evidence.

There are differences of opinion as to how smart Jeb is, but his rightist leanings and his hard line, take-no-prisoners attitude, which he tried to soften with a smirky "little boy" grin, were always on view.

Florida's moneyed Republican leaders thought Jeb was the cat's meow, but that was because he did his best to enrich their coffers. One of his first moves after setting up residence in Tallahassee, was to cut taxes for the rich. At his departure, the State of Florida was (and still is) in desperate financial straits.

Jeb's education program turned out to be a disaster. He continued to push charter schools even when the evidence indicated they were not any better, and often worse, than public schools. The linchpin of his education effort was to provide vouchers for parents to use taxpayers' dollars to send their kiddos to private (mostly religious) schools. That was shot down by the Florida Supremes.

Jeb fought to teach Creationism in public schools. This past year, though no longer governor, he worked behind the scenes with committee people he had appointed to try to again secure vouchers for private schools and the teaching of creationism in public schools.

Maybe it had something to do with the fact he converted to Catholicism (a religion which believes it has a right to taxpayer dollars) that he pushed faith-based operations in a variety of areas - including prisons; all of which were of questionable constitutionality.

Like his brother, George, Jeb thinks the death penalty is an important method of reducing the crime rate, and thus oversaw 21 executions during his time in office, which was more than his three predecessors combined.

Jeb also parroted the Republican line regarding off-shore drilling, and pushed hard to get Congress to allow drilling off the Florida shores.

And who will forget the law he got passed to allow him to continue feeding poor Terry Schiavo? This, too, derived from his religious and political right-wing conservatism.

Jeb is generally popular down here in Florida but I can't see him ever being President. America is very, very tired of anyone with the name "Bush."

Ironically, my ex-boss may have contributed to W being elected. My ex-boss used to be a Democrat and ran the campaign for former Democrat governor Lawton Chiles. Chiles was running for re-election in 1994, and his opponent was ... Jeb Bush! A last minute push by the Chiles team - primarily by calling old folks homes and scaring them into believing Bush wanted to cut their benefits - put them over the top and Jeb was defeated.

Why is this important? Because the plan was for Jeb to win the governorship in 1994 then run for President in 2000. However, he lost and didn't have enough experience when he became governor in 1998 to run for President. Ergo, the idiot son ran instead, having won as governor of Texas in 1994. And the rest is history.

BTW, Jeb's the smart brother. The dumb brother became President. So I think ol' Dad is just trying to make Jeb feel better.

I think history might have been a bit different had Jeb won, though you never know. Jeb is more curious than his brother, and is reputed to even read a book or two a year!

One of the most sickening ideas i've heard lately. Once the american public get
rid of the present bush, they should shield themselves from any more, ever coming
forward to sit in the oval office.
Unless, of course, they are gluttens for punishment, and, after electing this one
the second time, perhaps they are.
I beg the american citizen, reach beyond the present next time, and find someone
who is intelligent, highly educated, sincere, not on a ego trip, not looking for revenge for the attempt on his father's life, someone who can speak in public,
not a puppet for others, not a 'good ole boy', not someone who sucks up to the
religious right, someone who 'actually' puts country first.
All the 'old man' is looking for is a 'record' for 'how many relatives' become president, a bragging point.
There has to be 'one' good republican somewhere, it might take four years to
find him/her, but , well, 'maybe there isn't'.;-)

I never thought it was fair to judge a guy by his brother

The old man is just as clueless as the rest of the bunch. It must run in the male genes of the family. But Jeb is noted as being the smartest of the children the old man sired. I think the best part of the current President son ran down the old man's leg on the night of conception.

Excellent idea, he'd probably be the best president ever in the U.S. and when he gets stuck who better to go to than pop and Dubya?

At least he wouldn't replace GW at the bottom of the pack.

I don't think anybody (no matter how dumb) would go to GW for advice on anything.

Just being a "Bush" has killed any chance he'd would have had

"Son, you're making the same mistake in Iraq that I made with your mother. I didn't pull out in time..."

There is 300 million in the u.s., couldn't they check around somewhere else,
and get away from that family, it is the family, not the man, he can complain
to his brother and dad, if he thinks he is being picked on, just allow the
people to look elsewhere, they are in a rut, need to get out and start fresh.
Get away from texas, allow another state to represent the u.s. as president,
find an upgrade and someone different, families are families, they are tied,
can't be helped.
If he ran for president, his brother and dad/mother would be right there
as part of his campaign, same ole same ole, very tired of all of their faces,
enough is enough.
Start anew I say.
