Hi gerryh! I couldn't figure that one out myself. The numbers just looked odd. Both where hate crimes and mass murders as far as I understand it. Both groups of victims had commonalities to the murders so they're identifiable groups and thus the hate crime designation. Why the difference in sentencing beyond political optics when neither one of these freaks will ever see the outside of a prison again or at least shouldn't? Six Moslem's for 40yrs or Nine Gay's for 25yrs? Claiming the age of each murderer is a factor is a weak argument at best if justice is supposedly unbiased. If a group had to be picked for bashing I'd go for option 'C' being the Criminal Justice System in Canada.
When you pick an identifiable group to commit you're crimes against as opposed to a random sampling of society. If you choose to murder only Left Handed Lawyers regardless of their race or religion or gender, it's still an identifiable group with commonality so it can be argued that it's a hate crime. That's the way I understand it anyway.

That's not the fault of the "death penalty" that's the fault of the system. Even if you have to hire 4 guys to haul him up to the gallows, that shouldn't cost a shit load of money!
The "gay" killer should have had consecutive sentencing and not concurrent, don't care how old he is. The "mosque" killer got more because they were Muslims but also deserved consecutive sentences for each person killed! In that way, the killings would have been treated as the evil they were.

The murder of 'the girl next door' will always attract more police attention than those who live transient lifestyles, like gays, natives and prostitutes. It's not fair, but this is how it all shakes down in my opinion.
Well maybe it is fairer than you think. Some of the transient types mentioned have some coping skills in the 'jungle', whereas the little preteen girl generally has none. The crime may not be any more serious, but perhaps more attention has to be paid to the less abled.
