Didn't this start as a "Gasoline Prices" thread? We are now into extended, impossible to win, debates/disagreements on socialism? Start a socialism thread and also restart peapod's Gas Prices thread.

Gas prices here, in Barrie, Ontario, today, are 87.9 per litre. My heart goes out to the thousands of commuters who trek to Toronto, daily, to go to work. On average 175 km return trip. Many also commute from Cambridge and Kitchener/Waterloo to Toronto (about same distance).

Saw on the news last night that prices in BC (where many on the forum are located) almost hit $1 last evening.

No, that's what you seemed to be implying. The Bush regime heavily subsidizes several corporations. Are you saying they are socialists? The Alberta government subsidizes the oil industry through price structures. Are you saying that Ralph Klein is a socialist?

You understand neither what socialism is nor how a mixed economy works, Jay.

The democrats have been subsidizing industries for years now. Here are a couple of funny ones.

The US has one of the largest stocks of helium and it is subsidized by the Govt. Why? Because of the helium used in Navy Balloons to sink German Subs in WWI and WWII. True the navy got rid of the balloons decades ago but the money going into the helium industry never stopped because it was "pork" money.

We also have stockpiled massive amounts of wool to make uniforms. The military does not use wool for uniforms but the subsidies never stopped.

BC Gas. Reg 93.3. Advertised as 96. But the pump has .3 cents off.

Some places in BC are less. Apprently Mission has some cheap gas. But it'd cost you the full tank to get there and back.

Um, Eaglesmack? The Republicans have done nothing to roll back those subsidies and have raised subsidies to the oil and coal industries. Still laughing?

I actually find nothing funny about "pork" money. It was funny in the sense that it is ridiculous.

It is all about politics that keeps a helium plant running at full steam and vast spaces of land jammed with helium tanks waiting for the next Air Balloon War.

In that sense both parties ought to be ashamed. This is where bi-partisanship sucks well needed money into the "trough".

Yet it is the Republican Party that has been most resistant to political reform that would address such things. Now that's funny.

Bush's relationship to the oil industry is no laughing matter though. Cheney's is so frightening that he may yet end up in a French prison.

These men started a war, paid for with your tax money and the lives of your soldiers, to help out their buddies in the oil industry, EagleSmack. Cheney's old company, a company that still pays him, committed fraud and robbed your military.

You just keep on supporting these guys EagleSmack. Some of find willful ignorance amusing.

The Democrats are the biggest supporters of subsidies. They are the ones constantly trying to raise taxes and fund billions of dollars of useless social programs.

I cannot disagree with you more when you use the War for Oil junk. But then again that is all you have and it is a flashy rallying cry.

I really don't care if you agree or not. The war benefitted the oil companies. They have profitted massively. It isn't the only example either. In Colombia your fake war on drugs has soldiers guarding pipelines. Why is that? In Venezuela the CIA backed a coup to overthrow an elected leader, then the US government funded an election recall attempt. Both failed because Chavez has massive public support. Who did Chavez make mad? US oil interests.

Bush has spent billions of your money so his buddies can make a buck or two. They don't even pay taxes on that money. Wonder why I'm laughing at you?

Well I know you don't care. You do not care about anyones opinion or views that are contrary to yours.

And it is tough to counter some of your made up conspiracies because how can you counter fairy tales? I suppose I could say

"No Reverend... Canada tried to overthrow the Venezuelan Govt. because it would cut into the boatloads of cash that the US pays Canada for oil."

But that would be ficticious... get the point?

Go ahead and talk, EagleSmack. Be prepared to back it up with documentation though.

Our price fluctuations are the same on a percentage basis, Mr Mom. A lot of our high prices have to do the lack of competition between suppliers. A lot of cities, no matter how many retailers there are, are supplied by only one or two wholesalers. That's why the prices so often don't make sense.
