In Canada likewise, We're seeing an increase in 'blue-eyed' Muslims. So I don't think this is an 'immigration' issue anymore. That's just the stereotype of the typical Muslim of thirty years ago for those who don't have Muslim friends. Practically every major city in Canada now offers Arabic lessons to its new devotees.

And while I'm not a Muslim myself, and have no interest in adopting it as my own, I can see that, while I don't believe Islam will ever become universal in the west, it's still definitely going to have an impact, judging from the growth I've witnessed among the first generation Muslims in Canada. So heck, I've decided to learn Arabic myself. Hard language though.

You know what though. If France were really concerned about the loss of their culture, they could even adopt a system similar to Britain's, which I think is a good balance between church and state. On the one hand, the Queen is simultaneously the executive of government, as well as the head of the anglican church, thus effectively giving Christianity a certain recognition. yet on the other hand, individuals are free to worship as they with.

Now France hasn't got a Queen of course, but it could simply adopt Christianity as its official religion, even if it really means nothing other than to make Christians feel good. That alone might make them less paranoid about Muslims, feeling that with Christianity being official, it has some special recognition at least, so that then they could let Muslims go about their daily business without so much paranoia.

This is what we have in Canada Passpatoo. No religious symbols in schools, however, each student go to school can wear what they wish to wear, a cross, a turban or a head scarf. Isn't Canada wonderful?????

Yes Canada is wonderful. Worts and all!! However, I was actually referring to the original subject of should this be introduced in Canada and more specifically why it should not.

I heard a programme on NPR about a year ago about Catholic schools in Marsailles where the students are about 95% Muslim because Catholic school system there allows the students to wear head scarfs. I assume they're not offended by the crucifixs on the walls. The Catholic schools are either tolerant or need the tuition money.

In an unrelated, but amusing anecdote: A devout Muslim friend of mine attended 12 years of Catholic school in Maylasia while I, a devout Catholic, attended only 2 years of Catholic high school.

This is as normal as it gets in the Muslim world. I lived my childhood in Christian dominated neighborhood and went to Christian schools until i came to Canada were i was in all Christian schools. The opposite is true in countries where you have Muslims and Christian population such as Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan and so on. The only country that is an exception is Saudi Arabia. But it is as strange as it seems when we hear that they do not allow Christian things to be displayed in Public. The Vatican has a similar rules. I don't think they are to open a Muslim school inside the Vatican grounds anytime soon.
