Ford never said he thinks it should be illegal. He just stated that that is the way it is with a conservative government.

We were talking about crack in this post, not weed. We are wondering what they would say about the question of legalizing crack.

Really all drugs should be legal to use. It would cut crime and make it so much easier to treat addiction problems. addiction is properly a mental issue, not a criminal one.

Canada is pretty much at the point of treating addiction as a mental health issue. We don't really have people in jail just for being a weed, crack, or heroine user. If you come forward and say you have a problem, nobody is going to call the cops.

In Canada, it is illegal to sell food or consumer products that hurt people, so I think some of that logic needs to flow into these substances too. We already have a lot of support set up to help people who are addicted to these drugs, but I can't see how we can support products like crack or heroine that are so profoundly harmful.

Legalize or decriminalize all of it. Portugal seems to be doing alright for itself after a similar move. I have no interest in ever doing any drug again (aside from the occasional drink or medications as needed). Thats just me though. Its our bodies. We should be able to be the ones who decides what goes in them good or bad. Not someone else.

WE support the consumption of pharmaceuticals that are clearly dangerous just because some drug company wants to make a huge profit. Ever hear of thalidomide? I can make a long list if you really want.
The whole idea of making them legal is to keep the cops off the users and the users from needing to steal to support their habits and instead to get them into rehab. Currently there is a huge profit in illegal drugs and keeping possession illegal is what drives the high price and high costs of dealing with the actions caused by addictions. If possession is not a crime it takes a lot of the profit motive away from the criminal element that prey on addicts.

I would like to hear everyone's pros and cons in legalizing alcohol if it was a newly discovered product.

Of course Ford has gone against Harper on this and now the Toronto right wing radio stations are saying 'he isn't really a Conservative'.

I love how they turn on each other..............
