Unfortunately only theoretically can EDGE have data rates of 384 kbits/s, in the real world it will be able to provide a slightly less data rate than CDMA 1X. the link below will inform you of how I came to that conclusion. Also by the time EDGE has been fully implemented, TELUS will be moving on from 1X to CDMA2000 1xEV-DV clearly into 3G territory, and though its theoretical rate limit is 3.1 mbps (Oliver Valante, CDMA Development Group) its real-world data rate will actually be more along the lines of 1 Mbps. Its relatively cheaper for TELUS to venture such a task as upgrading infrastructure as opposed to GSM, as SCAPE has duly noted to upgrade GSM into WCDMA requires brand new infrastructure, which ROGERS won't be undertaking for at least another 5/6 years. Again since EDGE hs yet to be fully realised, I may be wrong, but current experimentation as well as the opinions of individuals whose primary mode is to review such technology seem to lend their names to CDMA as superior technology, easier to maintain service and easier to upgrade to 3G.

at least, Rogers has EDGE and GPRS everywhere of their coverage since it's fully digital. Telus and Bell 's digital coverage are smaller than Rogers' digital coverage.

not true. TELUS's 1X coverage covers 93% of canada's population, more then rogers or fido (TELUS has best digital coverage in Canada as I have already stated) where there is digital coverage for TELUS clients, there is 1X coverage. I don't quite understand how EGPRS/GPRS is everywhere because it's fully digital. Does that mean if i am in Yukon I can download a ringtone using my rogers V551 just cause EGPRS/GPRS is "everywhere", i seriously doubt it. isnt 1X also fully digital and coverage being dependant on tower capability?

Bell doesn't have full 1X coverage because it doesn't have a lot of towers in the west that have been upgraded to 1x plus it doesn't that many towers to begin with. Overall don't go with bell, rate plans are nonstarters for the most part, handsets are pretty crappy and unless your in newfoundland or the east their reception isn't very good.

I'm not going to argue with you, but can you just show me some of your proof, saying that Telus 1X has 93% of canadian population?

I used to be with Telus until they started cutting back on their plans. Plus piss poor service made me switch to Bell and I have yet to have any problems with coverage and I travel a fair bit. I find them more reliable than Telus from my expeirence in Vancouver.

sure kalok,

http://telusmobility.com/on/coverage/index.shtml

to the left, under the pig

i myself use ROGERS (amazing rate plan/contract) but my work provides me with a telus phone, so far i prefer the TELUS service, better reception, nice handset (LG 6190) and great roaming but then again i cant take it outside of North America which is pretty annoying. Never tried BELL but from what is being offered its pales in comparison to any other provider in Toronto.

I used to have a really crappy C350 but upgraded to a V551 a few months ago. Its a pretty decent phone (i prefer the 6190) but the rate plan is awesome, for $20 i get 250 anytime minutes + ultd evening/weekend calling from 6 pm to 8 am. if i was to make a comparison between the LG 6190 and the MOTO V551 I'd say the moto has more stuff (videofone, bluetooth etc.) but the fastap is pretty swell for actual talking, the V551 has a really low volume even at max and the speakerfone is just not loud enough, also the keyboard has a plasticky feel to it as if it is constructed from poor materials, whereas the LG 6190 has a really good speakerphone, volume is great overall and the screen has better resolution (262 k vs 65 k)

RE: Fido vs. Telus/Clearn

It's probably your V551 defective, coz i know there is some sort of issues with the V551.

Just to make sure you have the right volume to the max, you have to press the side up key during conversation.

If that still doesnt' work, go to see your local dealer and have them send it back to repair.
