Expanded parental leave to come into effect by end of year, sources say

New mothers and fathers who are poised to go on parental leave before the end of the year will be able to spread federal benefits over a longer period of more time starting next month.

The federal government will today unveil the details of its long-promised changes to parental leave rules that will allow eligible new parents to take up to 18 months of employment insurance benefits after the birth of a child.

Sources say the new rules will take effect next month, but the exact date will be disclosed later today by Social Development Minister Jean-Yves Duclos.

On that date, a new family caregiver benefit will also kick in, and eligible soon-to-be-mothers will be allowed to claim maternity benefits up to 12 weeks before the baby is due.

A few weeks.
A couple extra months.

Pittances.

While the government throws a few crumbs, they organize that both parents have to work longer and longer,
with more and more stress for less money, and less time or no time at home,

and the child becomes property of the State.

Wonderful.

It will definitely make things harder for employers.

It might, however, lead to an increase in job opportunities for older employees, who aren't as likely to have children or elderly parents.

I agree, nothing is more valuable than experience and training a temp wouldn't be worth it.

Much to do about nothing as EI doesn't pay enough for most people to stay away from their jobs. The only ones benefitting are those that aren't going back anyway. I think that EI payments should be clawed back if you don't return to work for at least six months after your benefit period ends. I know far too many women that had a kid and collected EI with zero intension of going back to work. That's not the point of EI

If the Libs really cared about the upbringing of the children and their welfare they would have extended the EI payments another 6 months as well.....

agreed. $326 bucks a week isn't going to cut it. They need to increase that. If they want Canadians to have more kids rather than importing third world people they need to make it easier.

Pete's claims he was a farmer so he's been on the government tit for years. You have to work and pay in to collect

EI...Employment INSURANCE. One pays premiums every paycheque towards that INSURANCE so that it is available when needed. To collect, as you have already pointed out, she would have had to have worked and payed into the INSURANCE. She is collecting, what she has paid for.

Another idiot who thinks EI is welfare. Big surprise there.
