Yeah, that's what the USA wants to they can extradite him to be on trial in the USA.. it's a friggin setup.
Why would Sweden extradite Assange to the USA. They want him on unrelated rape charges. Trust me, the UK would have been more likely to hand him over to the US than Sweden since it's an ally (Sweden is merely a friendly nation, not a treaty partner of any kind), and even it did not do so.
Even if Assange made it to the US (unless some idiot sends him off to Guantanamo), you can pretty well guarantee the US coourt would first want to determine if the actions for which he is accused were committed while he was on US soil. If not, they'd gladly send him off to whatever country will try him for a crime on their national soil.
Even the US knows that so more likely than not the worse punishment they could give him would be to simply make him persona non-grata to give him a hard time at any port of entry.
Unless of course it could be proven that he was on US soil when he committed these acts.
To take an example, if I'm sitting at a computer in Canada and steal money from a US bank online, US law could not touch me. Sure they'd pass all info on to the Canadian authorities to nail my azz, but that's a separate matter.
As for conspiracy theories concerning the US involved in setting rape charges against Assange in Sweden, it would be an extremely stupid move because:
1. What would the US get out of it other than giving him a hard time in Sweden for its own sake, and
2. If the US were found out, they already tarnished reputation woudl look even worse.
I have a hard time immagining any US government agency is involved in his Swedish rape claims. It it were found that some US department were involved, you could bet your bottom dollar some head woudl roll. The US would not want to touch this with a ten-foot pole if it has any thought processes going on up there.
