RE: English Debate Tonigh
Poll shows Martin topped debate
A teaser:
OTTAWA -- Paul Martin's animated debate-night defence of federalism and the Charter of Rights appeared to win favour with voters, suggests a new poll that proclaims the Liberal leader the winner of last week's English-language encounter.
But the Decima Research survey also indicates New Democrat Leader Jack Layton struck a chord with many viewers, and that Conservative Leader Stephen Harper made the poorest impression of the three national party leaders.
The poll found 31 per cent of respondents thought Martin won the debate, with 20 per cent picking Harper and 17 per cent going for Layton.
The results of the online tracking survey, conducted with the help of Carleton University's School of Journalism and provided to CP, suggested that 49 per cent of respondents said the debate improved their perception of Layton.
In the study, 51 per cent of respondents said the unity remark made them more likely to vote Liberal, while 47 per cent said the same about the charter exchange.
Layton, meanwhile, made substantial gains, Anderson said.
"The really important measures here are probably Layton's continued ability to impress people as an empathetic person and as a skilled communicator, and at the same time, Stephen Harper doesn't seem to be able to achieve that measure of connection with people."
Anderson said the NDP leader could be a problem for Harper. [/end of teaser]

Well hopefully the NDP can pick up an extra seat or 4 out of this, especially if Jack can increase his improved perception for the next debates. To me I thought Jack did better than Martin and Harper.
