A young couple have been left heartbroken after planners ordered their unique 'hobbit home' to be bulldozed, effectively leaving them homeless.
Charlie Hague and Megan Williams, both 25, built the roundhouse from scratch with their own hands, using only natural materials.
But the couple lost their appeal today against a planning enforcement notice telling them to tear their pride and joy home down.
Charlie and Megan, who have a one-year-old son Eli, built the house on private land in Glandwr, North Pembrokeshire, last summer.

Sad for the family, but they should not have assumed everything would be fine. Gov'ts can be damned nasty for no apparent reason.
Unfortunately, they probably would not have got a permit even if they applied. Permits would require an engineer to sign off on a project like that and it would be impossible to find one willing to. Building inspectors only think linearly (as in square). I've built several unorthodox homes for myself that I never got permits for. I never think about being in one for any length of time, but this house they built was a work of art and love. Way beyond bureaurats' comprehension.

Unfortunately you can build anything you want and it won't pass inspection
and it won't be built without a permit. There is one thing that does bother me.
In many cases people build what they want and apply for a variance after the
fact. If this couple can't have their home, then all variance permits should be
denied and they should be forced to tear them down regardless of how much
investment went into it.

Built of an eco sensitive area, no permit, no engineering, no brains.

Yet they built a beautiful home.. so I guess they had the brains to do that, and some basic engineering skills, it's an eco friendly home that works with the environment..

I'd say they did a nice job..

Besides, Petro you're so anti-green about everything.. you're comment is no surprise.
