One person is in hospital in serious condition after 20 e-bikes caught on fire in a residential underground parking garage on Monday.

Toronto Fire were called at 12:30 a.m. to 564 Eglinton Ave. W., just east of Spadina Ave., for the three-alarm blaze.

“We responded to reports of a fire at an underground residential building,” said District Fire Chief Dan Vieira.

“We found a bunch — 20 e-bikes — on fire and we cleared the smoke and got the fire out. One tenant was taken to hospital.”

The person has serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Damages are still being assessed.

There was no immediate word on who owned the e-bikes or why there were so many.

“Toronto Fire Services is currently conducting a comprehensive investigation into the origin, cause and circumstance of this fire incident. There are no further comments until such time the investigation has been completed,” a City of Toronto spokesperson said.

Security camera footage captured the moment a man allegedly shoved a shopping cart at an e-bike rider on Danforth Ave. near Monarch Park Ave. on Tuesday, April 29, 2205.
Security video shared this week to social media captured the moment a man “purposely” shoved a shopping cart at an e-bike rider, who crashed heavily onto the pavement.

Toronto injury lawyer David Shellnutt shared a clip of the incident to X, which occurred just before 10 a.m. Tuesday on Danforth Ave. near Monarch Park Ave.

“Details remain limited but we are reading reports from the Danforth East York Woodbine Community Facebook group that there is video of a man pushing a grocery cart into a bike lane to purposely take out a cyclist,” Shellnutt, who is also known as the Biking Lawyer, said in an emailed statement.

In the video, a man is seen pushing an empty cart along the sidewalk before he launches it toward the bike lane and into the path of the oncoming e-bike rider, who may be a food delivery worker.

The man turns his head around to watch the collision unfold and continues to casually walk away. The rider gets up and sits on the curb.

According to Shellnutt, another e-cyclist stopped to help the fallen rider, later taken to hospital to receive treatment for injuries that Toronto Police describe as non-life-threatening.

“This represents a clear and present danger to cyclists and other road users in the City of Toronto,” Shellnutt said.

“Our hope is that members of the community can help identify this perpetrator and share that information with Toronto Police to affect an arrest for aggravated assault. We are hoping that sharing his image and the video of the incident will help lead to his apprehension and create awareness amongst cyclists to be wary and stay safe.”

Toronto Police said officers responded to a radio call for an assault near Danforth Ave. and Monarch Park Ave. on Tuesday.

A report was taken from the rider about the incident and on Thursday, police announced an arrest.

Nektarios Manimanakis, 47, of Toronto, is charged with mischief endangering life, assault with a weapon, and assault cause bodily harm. He is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on Finch Ave. on Thursday at 10 a.m.

“Our hope is that the person injured has a speedy recovery,” Shellnutt said. “We know all too well the long-term recovery costs and complications that result from incidents like this.”

I'm surprised he didn't go on high-speed chase with the cart that ended with crashing on some white folk's lawn.

How can you get more Caucasian than that?
