Does the magnetic pole have an elliptic track?

I would think it's probably random.

When the iron in the lava is liquid, it aligns itself along the dipole. After it hardens it's there for geologists, paleo-scientists and other geoscientists to extract useful information from.

...and the correlation with the depressions on the Earths surface that these line
up with? Is that still a mystery, or due to the weight of something other than a
Polar Cap....or something else entirely?

Thanks for all this information, I have been curious about the North Pole and the magnetic field for quite a while. I am not commenting because this is all pretty much over my head, but I am having a ball reading. Give me time and I might someday be able to join in the discussion. Thanks again
