Doug Ford says what the Liberal party of Canada tells him to say. He would toss the whole country under the bus to save 1 minimum wage manufacturing job in OntariOWE.

Doug Ford was such a tough guy, threatening to shut off the power to the USA.. people could die, freeze to death.
Holy hyperbole Batman. Remember, the US doesn't need anything from Canada according to the Trumpty Dumpster. Nobody is gonna die. They'll just have higher utility bills until Mr. Art of the Deal makes the US truly energy independent. Besides, why the hell should Ontario rate-payers subsidize American use of our hydro?

All this, and...

If the Tangerine Terrorist wants to renegotiate deals, he can do that for the power going to the US, and start paying an actual market price for it. Same for oil.

Hydro exports are sold at market rates. There's no discount for the US.

The humorous irony is listening to a twit who renegotiated the trade agreement last time he was president whine about what a rotten deal the US got.

Did not know this; thank you for informing.

So if Ontario residents are subsidizing American use of hydro, wouldn't that still make the US getting rates lower than market or are they just sidestepping it all together?

No, what I mean is Ontario and Quebec pay more for hydro imported from the US than the US pays for hydro imported from Ontario and Quebec.
Between 2019-2023 Quebec paid an average of $78.49/MWh for imported US hydro while the US paid an average of $47.81/MWh for Quebec hydro.
Between 2019-2024 Ontario paid an average of $57.51/MWh for hydro imported from the US while the US paid an average of $41.77/MWh for Ontario hydro.

Ontario generally exports anywhere from 2-4 times as much hydro per year as they import from the US.

Sorry, wasn't too clear 'bout what I was asking. But this is the info I thought it was. The US pays less for hydro.

From the numbers you gave, least to me, it seems that the US is getting a damn sweet deal, whether it's being sold cheaper hydro from Ontario and Quebec, or Canadians are paying more to keep US rates low.

Which isn't right/fair/whatever. Considering things now, I still think it's past time to 'renegotiate' those rates to either make them even, or for any imported hydro to be as low in rates.

It certainly seems that the US is getting a 'sweet deal' on hydro, regardless, and isn't "not needing" it.

The US gets lots of stuff from Canada it "doesn't need" that it needs. Medical isotopes, oil, hydro, uranium, agricultural products, never mind Canada having some of the largest known deposits of REEs. And of course the US can get all those from other countries and do, but those supplies will never be as secure as the supplies from Canada, unless the friggin' head idiots of Canada and the US screw it up.
Because I'm not putting all of this on Trump. Some of the things he's been chirping about I agree with and in some of those cases have been chirping about it longer than he has.
The problem is both countries have immature, massively egotistical twats at their helms. And Carney being the WEF bitch that he is, won't help things in the least.

Like I said, there's only two reasons why the US has any trade deficit at all with Canada. 1) With 9x the pop of Canada, Americans collectively buy more shit than Canadians do. 2) $120 billion worth of imported oil, gas and coal from Canada vs maybe $5 billion worth exported to Canada.
The next month or so is gonna be real interesting.
