Does Canada spend too little on defence?

Ocean, you certainly cannot be serious. By that premise, its more important to protect complete strangers than it is family and friends.

.....No , not "serious" but there is a nuance in what I said, that has been missed entirely. The idea is to explore conceptual thought as opposed to strict binary thought (IF I interpret "binary" the way it is meant in your post.

and No, that is not the interpretation of said "premise"

IF CA and US are real partners , it might be an idea ( concept) to entertain that each nation develope a different FOCUS fot its defenses. The US focus is MILITARY.......and if the CA focus was peacekeeping......(as part of the overall miltary , national defense system).....then a constructive partnership of cooperation can evolve.

Sometimes it is important to think "out of the box" to explore new concepts, methods, and strategies.

How much "military " is too much??? and how much peacekeeping forces is too little. Isn't the aim on this planet to work for PEACE and cooperative coexistance?? "Force " is not the only "solution" to problems. (in fact as we have seen throughout history and NOW......it creates more problems than it solves)

Depends on which conceptual framework is a priority to a nation.

There you go Mr. Intruder, kill all my friends and family

you mean like the Mr. Intruder ....aka .....the US that has killed friends, family, maimed many, in Iraq. Who is the intruder there??

On a domestic level.... the situation is different. Following your premise........everyone in household should have "military" or guns of all sorts ......"just in case" some insane drug addicted jerk decides to "intrude" so he can rob one to get his fix. Or a dissed off spouse comes back to destroy what he couldn't have?

How much CA spends on defense is essentially CA's business. If it requires adjustment and more budget .......to bring equipment up to par........etc. , it will. Putting a money value on it can only be done when an assessment of what is really needed is done. Otherwise one is just throwing around arbitrary numbers.

rev: good points. Don't think any citizen has the knowledge base to make that call. This should be handled by the ones in the field.--- as they are better equipped to know what is needed and where the priorities should go. Tossing arbitrary numbers around is meaningless. (although big numbers do "impress" some people)

RE: Does Canada spend too

IF CA and US are real partners

With all this mad cow, potatoes and softwood lumber etc. we clearly see that we are not real partners. They just use us and string us along so they can get our resources.

I may be nuts (or drunk) but we should stop selling oil to America and sell it to China instead as they need it and will need all they can get soon and sign a deal with China to station troops along the border incase "W" has ideas..........There are other countries we can be friends with. They dont appreciate us, so why should we make their lives easier?

Why do you guys always go there? Saying you should increase more on military spending to protect yourself and your allies does not mean you have to blindly follow your allies into war.

No it doesn't. My premise is that the first priority of the armed forces is to protect the country. Period. But that doesn't mean you need to manufacture nuclear weapons or be armed to the teeth.

it takes one to see one, don't it?

apart from that.......is that all you have to come back with..as a reasonable and sensible response. Shooting from the mouth, isn't debating or discussing.

(but the author of the post you so casually dismissed has a valid concept......might not be realistic---yet -- but a concept just the same.)

I wouldn't know, I'm neither drunk nor nuts.

What was reasonable and sensible of selling oil to China and in return have Chinese soldiers stationed along the Canadian/US border? Why would China do that if they are buying your oil?

Here's a better idea, spend the profits from oil selling to China, spend the money on your military and guard your own borders.
