There are a few loonies that are in the newspapers here every year because they like taking winter dips in the Irish Sea or North Sea.

I live on the Great Lakes and it's quite common to see here.
They'll probably be even colder than the Irish Sea at least because that's warmed by the Gulf Stream.

Our neighbours, the Belgians and Dutch, also like to go for winter swims in the North Sea.

As a group activity, it's kind of fun to do.
In the past it was a reason to gather and be together.
Any excuse in the winter etc.

Northern Ontario,
I don't know where it started but in the fifties when I was young and visited with my dad who was cook in the lumber camps we had steam rooms there, and in the winter the Norwegian lumberjacks would cut a hole in the river ice, jump in, then run to the steam room to warm up!
