Here
While I don't place any mystical value in this, I find it interesting that all the major religions do hold this date as something special. This might be the only bloody thing that all the major religions agree on. It is certainly interesting that there will be a total eclipse of the sun on this date and that this date is also the end of the Mayan calendar. Interesting enough to keep me from standing back and stupidly yelling "crap, crap, and more crap".

Ask a scientist about "GOSH NUMBERS" ,numbers that appear time after time........mind you there's no correlation whatsoever
nope
not atall
not never.....................;-)

The scariest thing about Dec 21st 2012 will be that it is 3 days of shopping until Christmas and people are bizarre enough without the pressure of spending money because the TV and a 200 year old book said so but adding in some ancient stone calendar fear from a culture that had no idea other continents and people existed just as our ancestors had no idea they existed. Did our or their myths intertwine in days gone bye and create catastrophe?

Doubtful.

I'm curious about what Christian religions hold this date as special, and what they say is special about it.
That day will have 24 hours, some daylight, some darkness, some will die, some will be born, and hopefully I'll have a dump. Of course that's just us Presbyterians.

I opened this topic because I thought that it was mildly interesting as a subject of light conversation. The date is significant to me if only because when you google just the date you get about 3,740,000 hits. I find it strange that I never heard of it before yesterday.

It's just more end of the world stuff. Google for St. Malachi, and the Secrets of Fatima, as a start, and no doubt you'll find many links that'll let you spread out into the Christian version of this little fantasy.

Or is it Pagan influences surfacing inside Christianity again?

Could be, it's pretty hard to separate all the threads woven into Christianity, but Christianity itself has a long tradition of apocalypticism (that a word?). MHz can tell you all about it.

I accidentally ran across people talking about this date like it was really special

December 21, 2012

I believe Nostradamus predicted the end of the world on this day but didn't he also predict the end of the world a few times already?
December 21, 2012 is also the end of the Mayan calendar.
Several other people have predicted the end of the world on that day. Their names escape me for some reason.
On this day there is also a total eclipse of the sun...visible in Northern Australia..

Anybody know anything about this?......Comments?

In fact there is nothing in Nostradamus quatrains that mentions any explicit date. All of the supposed accuracy of his predictions come from 'reading in' interpretations, often in a most arbitrary way, after events have happened.. and to passages that many other potential outcomes might have applied.

Also i believe you'll find that Mayan Calendar did not predict the end of the world in 2012, it simply refers to a cycle of celestial events that recur, little different than our applying a calendar year to an earthly orbit of the sun.

I doubt we have anything to worry about on Dec. 21, 2012. Nothing in our future is inevitable, except our own death and taxes. Therefor no outcome in inevitable and beyond human reason and ability to alter to a more favourable course.

Not specificly on that date, but the time frames surrounding it sounds like
it might be an interesting time for Astronomers and Astronomy Buffs.
