KITCHENER, ON, May 22, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - Dozens of correctional officers working in Ontario penitentiaries who are affiliated with the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers (UCCO-SACC-CSN) will be going door to door in the riding of Kitchener-Centre on Saturday, May 23, to urge voters not to support the Conservative Party of Canada in the next election.

Armed with solid arguments to demonstrate that the Conservatives' record is disastrous in such areas as public safety, correctional agents will be speaking with voters in this riding.

"The Conservative government claims it's tough on crime. This tough on crime agenda is nothing but smoke and mirrors aimed at reassuring voters,"

The Conservative government cut $355 million from the Correctional Service's budget. Hardest hit by these cuts is the inmate training program. One of the consequences of this decision is that penitentiaries have become more dangerous for correctional officers. Many inmates will end up in the community sooner or later, but they should be given the opportunity to develop skills so they can reintegrate into society.

"This government is lying to you, and it's doing nothing to ensure the safety of Canadians, quite the opposite. We are meeting with voters to make sure they have the information they need to make an informed choice at election time in the fall," concluded Mr. Finucan.

Inmates are uneducated and have no skills?

Are they using these skills?

If they aren't using these skills, why supply them?

I don't pretend to know how things work, and suspect that there must be
differences on a provincial level regarding corrections. I have an antidotal
story.

My Son has a friend that he grew up with, who came from a privileged
family, who made a very poor choice about seven years ago resulting in
a death. Sentencing took a long time, and this young man in the last seven
years traveled much (India and through Europe) as he knew he'd have to
pay for his mistake with a chunk of time out of his life.

He was sentenced last year to 2yrs+ so federal time. After a few weeks
in the P.A. Pen where it was deemed that he was not a risk to himself or
others, he was assigned to a camp (more of a farm) to work. He's also
applied himself to obtaining every certification he can train for. I believe
he has obtained his WHIMS & First Aid & Power Mobile & a Fork Lift
Operators Cert as of several months ago. What he has obtained in the
last several months I'm not aware of, to be honest.

This is in Saskatchewan and not Ontario, so that may be why my story
contradicts the O.P. so greatly, and maybe it's due to this young man
just being bright enough to have a game plan to get through his time in
as a positive experience......I just don't know.
