It's too bad the Conservatives are really neo-conservatives. And have a legacy of electing mediocrities to lead their party. Harper is completely average in intellect, national and moral sense.. without the wherewithal to extricate himself from the classic economic liberalism that pervades neoconservative principles. I don't think he's a malignant American stooge like Mulroney though, just not very smart.

We need a party that can reassert Canada's economic sovereignty, most prominently in energy and other natural resources, but in manufacturing as well. That takes a plan that rejects the nonsense of the 'Invisible Hand of the Free Market', which simply leaves the field to a predatory, incestuous, global investment organism. A petty ideologue like Harper, making a fool of himself by going around the globe signing Free Trade Agreements with banana republics, will never get us out of our economic and social malaise.

I would class Ignatieff as possessing something of an independent intellect, but his party is now in the grip of post structural dogma, run by radical environmentalists, feminist and homosexual advocates, new age social axioms, and of course like all Liberal Party platforms, is fundamentally Free Trade in orientation, as with the Reciprocity Treaty of Laurier.

Essentially we've been left without a representation for a National System of Political Economy, our only hope to get us out of an economic paradigm that is like a bouncing ball, losing energy everytime is hits ground. The NDP are hopeless.

Great post.

When Liberals win the majority then textile industry plants will start to open and the forest industry will flourish in Quebec

(with apologies to Harry McClintock)

One evening as the sun went down and the jungle fire was burning
Down the track came a Liberalman hiking and he said boys I'm not turning
I'm headin for a land that's far away beside the crystal fountains
So come with me we'll go and see the New Look Liberal Nation

In the New Look Liberal Nation there's a land that's fair and bright
Where the handouts grow on bushes and you sleep out every night
Where the boxcars are all empty and the sun shines every day
On the birds and the bees and the cigarette trees
Where the lemonade springs where the bluebird sings
In the New Look Liberal Nation

In the New Look Liberal Nation all the cops have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth and the hens lay soft boiled eggs
The farmer's trees are full of fruit and the barns are full of hay
Oh, I'm bound to go where there ain't no snow
Where the rain don't fall and the wind don't blow
In the New Look Liberal Nation

In the New Look Liberal Nation you never change your socks
And the little streams of alcohol come a-trickling down the rocks
The brakemen have to tip their hats and the railroad bulls are blind
There's a lake of stew and of whiskey too
You can paddle all around 'em in a big canoe
In the New Look Liberal Nation

In the New Look Liberal Nation the jails are made of tin
And you can walk right out again as soon as you are in
There ain't no short handled shovels, no axes saws or picks
I'm a goin to stay where you sleep all day
Where they hung the jerk that invented work
In the New Look Liberal Nation

I'll see you all this coming fall in the New Look Liberal Nation

BTW, try to get it straight....Mulroney was brought down by Reform....

No. Mulroney was brought down by the voters because people were sick of broken promises and the growing debt.

I'm not surprised that (given your advanced age) you have difficulty remembering history. Mulroney did not "bring down" the conservatives nor did the voters "bring down Mulroney". They never had a chance. The reality is that the party was quite popular at the beginning of the 93 election campaign and there was every reason to believe they could continue on as the government.

To use a baseball analogy...

Kim Campbell told reporters that the deficit or unemployment would not be much reduced before the "end of the century."
Steeeeeeeerike one!!!!!

Kim Campbell told reporters that Canada's social policies were far too complex to enter into a 47 day discussion about overhauling them (there simply wasn't enough time). The media (Liberalman types) misrepresented her comment and the public assumed she meant that elections aren't the time to discuss serious issues.

Steeeeeeeeerike two!!!!

The Conservative Party, seeing their support in the polls dropping faster than a hookers panties on Saturday night, came up with a series of attack ads, one of which made fun of Chretiens face.

Steeeeeeeeeerike three!!!!

Hence, the Conservatives went from a couple of percentage points behind the Liberals during the summer months to 25 percentage points come election time. None of that can be blamed on Mulroney.

As for Reform, they were merely the recipient of much of the Conservative exodus. They certainly weren't the cause of it. Kudos to them though for making the most of it.

Well, if you step back, you'd realize that Campbell only became leader because the likely candidates could see the writing on the wall, and nobody wanted it. She was allowed to win the leadership and run, while all the party insiders figured it was a lost cause, although they thought that, if there was any chance of winning, playing the 'first woman PM' card might work (a tactic similar to one tried, without success, by John McCain).

The party insiders had already assumed the election was lost, based on the government's record.

So it all can be blamed on Mulroney.

Then we should never have anyone in the PM orifice for anything more than a couple months.

Since they were 2% behind in the summer and dropped to 25% behind after Mulroney left, you are wrong. He had nothing to do with the free fall.

Besides, what "the Conservative party believed", aside from being irrelevant, is nothing more than speculation. The polls were what the polls were. The Conservatives had every opportunity to win the 93 election after Brian retired.

Mulroney was brought down by the voters when they elected only two Conservative MPs, which is a sad performance considering that they had a majority government going into that election.

The Conservatives had absolutely no chance of winning that election. Lyin' Brian left before he had his head handed to him on a platter. Bulroney was the most hated man in Canadian politics and Kim Campbell was a sacrificial lamb.
