O'Toole won the leadership by pandering to social conservatives who want to ban abortion. He plans to scrap Canada’s pollution pricing plan. He’s vowed to strip the CBC of its funding. And he continues Scheer’s legacy of dog-whistling to bigots and xenophobes in the party.
Some folks think O’Toole doesn’t have a shot of becoming Prime Minister. But remember how pundits discounted Trump?
When Parliament resumes on September 23rd, the federal government will put forward their vision for Canada’s COVID-19 recovery. That will be accompanied by a vote of confidence that could trigger a federal election.
Whichever party wins that election will lead Canada out of pandemic and create the terms of our economic recovery. We need a government that will put average Canadians before huge corporations and billionaires. We need a government that will commit to a green transition. O’Toole’s Conservatives will not do that.
At the height of the pandemic, when millions of struggling Canadians were unemployed, O’Toole remarked that it was “backwards” that workers received government aid before businesses.[1] Is that the type of leader we want to lead us out of this recession?
