All things being equal, I believe improvements in coal technology is more practical and more plausible than major advancements in renewable technologies. For example, how many billion of dollars have been sunk into hydrogen fuel cells, and still no hydrogen fuel cells, yet the coal industry has already figured out how to scrub their emmissions so well that the days of the black death cloud of london has been a fact for the history books because it doesnt happen anymore.

There are usable hydrogen cells.BC Transit had a bunch of busses running on them. High maintenance poor performance. Went back to diesel.

What some people dont realize is coal might be the best way to recharge all these fictional fuel cells should they become practical

I don't think that renewables like solar or wind are coal's competitor at this point in history. Two generations from now, probably. It's the plentiful reserves of clean burning natural gas .. the stuff is everywhere in shale ... that needs no further processing that has driven coal (as a fuel) from the market. It wasn't windmills.

Actually natural gas contains a number of pollutants such as sulphur. Alberta is one of the largest producers of sulphur in the world, all of it extracted from natural gas before it is shipped to consumers.

It's not from NG. It's from heavy oil upgrading and very valuable.

Why do you smurf things up?

If you are clueless shut your smurfhole instead of lying.

You really are poorly informed about your own industry aren't you? Sulphur has been a by-product of natural gas production in Alberta for decades. Hell, you can drive right by stockpiles of sulphur just north of Calgary on the Queen Elizabeth highway. Last I checked there is no heavy oil upgrader there. Let me give you some advice. Before you contradict anything I post know your facts.

About seventy employees of the coal-fired electrical plant at Gibbons Creek in Anderson are being laid off.

The Texas Municipal Power Agency is moving to seasonal operations, meaning it will only run during the hot summer months, June through September.

Both TMPA and Bryan Texas Utilities officials say, it's not economical to keep the plant running year round. With the recenticetag of natural gas, and the advent of more efficient alternative enrgy sources, they say coal power is just too expensive.

The layoffs at TMPA will begin in October. About 20 employees will remain to run safety operations at the plant over the winter. Then, as June approaches, more will be added back to get the plant up to full operation for the summer.

Bryan, Garland, Denton, and Greenville make up the Texas Municipal Power Agency. The TMPA has been trying to sell this power plant for nearly a year now. BTU officials say, it's not going well, and there are no pending sales nor attractive offers.

The deadline to sell is September 2018. At that point, the TMPA board will have to decide whether to shut down operations at Gibbons Creek completely.
