On 30th June 1908 a meteorite exploded a mile or two above Tunguska in Siberia. The explosion flattened 80 million trees over an 830 square mile area but, being in a vast wilderness, only 3 people were killed. But just imagine had that meteorite hit the ground - right on a major urban area. And, at 330ft, that asteroid was slightly smaller that Asteroid JF1.

To put that 830 square miles in perspective, it's almost exactly the same size as Leicestershire (832 square miles).

Fake news.

Why we need not fear Asteroid 2009 JF1, which could hit Earth in 2022

The false news

There are several versions of this false news circulating on the internet with some small differences between them, which adds that “cordless phone” effect, where with each version, the message seems to depart further from reality.
....

The facts

But without a doubt, the biggest failure and the main responsible for the uproar caused around this asteroid, was probably a simple conversion error. The estimated average diameter of the asteroid is 0,013 kilometers, that is, only 13 meters, and not 130 meters as reported in all publications.

The term “massive asteroid” found in some articles here in Brazil, is probably a wrong translation of the term "Massive asteroid" used for high-mass asteroids. This term may have been used due to the confusion regarding the energy measurement units mentioned above. Someone may have understood that it would have 230 thousand tons of mass when, in fact, the 2009 JF1 has about 2,8 thousand tons. Much less, but still, it is no small feat. It must be difficult to feel safe imagining that a rock with so many tons can fall on us at any moment.

But it is nothing that we have to worry about as it would hardly cause further damage to the ground. Thanks to its great speed, a good part of this mass must be vaporized in contact with our atmosphere, generating a large and luminous meteor, without great risks for the population. So much so that, despite passing very close to Earth and having some risk of impact, it is not considered a PHA, or Potentially Dangerous Asteroid, contrary to what is reported in several publications.

In summary, Asteroid 2009 JF1, about 13 meters long, has a small chance (only 0,026%) of reaching Earth in 2022 at an uncertain date. However, there is no cause for concern, because even if it does, the asteroid is not large enough to cause further damage to the ground.

Witnessing the level of overt political exploitation, intentional deconstruction of liberty, and irrational out of control fear gripping society these days, I've been thinking maybe we need an event that actually does threaten potential devastation to bring us back to reality...give us some much needed perspective. An asteroid would likely do just fine.

I don't know what this modern media and political obsession with scaremongering is supposed to achieve.

"Killer Asteroid Could Hit Earth In 2022!"

Turns out its length is not much longer than the distance the opposition have to be from the ball during a football free kick.

Made with a rock small that a VW Bug.. do you see that building on the ledge the size of a Walmart??

That's right.. you can't see it.. the hole is that big.. I have personally stood on the edge of this massive hole.

Haha, Just to make everyone happy: Howabout 160 feet wide coming in and the size of Vw AFTER it hit the ground?
:)
Like a bit of high velocity heat shrink with a touch of impact compaction.

Kinda like front ending a fat girl on a moped with a mac truck while piling into a bridge, pulling a load of scrap steel...with a beer can on the dash.

They say right in the observatory the size of a VW Bug made the crater

Barringer Meteor Crater and Its Environmental Effects. Forty-nine thousand years ago, a large 30 to 50 meter diameter iron asteroid impacted the Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona. The resulting massive explosion excavated 175 million tons of rock, forming a crater nearly a mile wide and 570 feet deep.

Meteor Crater formed from the impact of an iron-nickel asteroid about 46 meters (150 feet) across. Most of the asteroid melted or vaporized on impact. The collision initially formed a crater over 1,200 meters (4,000) feet across and 210 meters (700 feet) deep. Subsequent erosion has partially filled the crater, which is now only 150 meters (550 feet) deep.

Has anyone pointed out Washington is a hole yet?

Watched a video yesterday on YouTube where a guy was near the Capitol Building and be noticed there's s huge construction site outside it with loads of diggers and nobody seems to know what the Hell it is they're building.
