'Five million' homeless in quake

So far, 22,069 deaths have been confirmed and thousands remain missing. It is feared up to 50,000 may be dead.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7405103.stm

Not an easy task to shelter that many people.
It reminds me of 1945, when all the refugees from East-Germany had to be taken care of in bombed out West-Germany! And bombs were still raining down.

I have never been homeless yet, and can probably not really feel what it is like for those unfortunate people. It is just marvelous how in such dire times all humans hold together and help each other. Together they face the crisis.

Earthquake in China - Where is Canada?!

As the whole world already knows, the earthquake in China caused stagging destruction and massive casualties. Latest estimates shows that the death toll could reach 50,000. Shortly after the tragedy happened, many countries around the world offered their generous help to China in many ways, financial aid, rescue teams, you name it.

However, after almost FOUR days, Canada is still close to being totally silent. The government of Canada did not offer any serious help to China in the after-quake rescue and relief efforts. And I noticed that, as the prime minister, Mr. Harper, showed little sympathy to the people in the quake-stricken area, we hardly heard anything from him.

When many civilized countries are helping the Chinese, with numerous people still suffering and dying under the ruins, their hope of survival diminishing second after second, what is beyond my imagination is that, Canada, as a country, suddenly disappeared!

I want to ask, WHERE IS CANADA?

So Stephen Harper mentioned before that he is concerned about human-rights conditions in China. I guess he was saying is that he cares about the people's lives in China. Now, how can you prove what you meant when your government is totally ignoring what is happening in China?! You and your government showed little sympathy as a human nature.

And I am wondering, why, ever since Stephen Harper came to power, the once nice relationship between Canada and China deteriorated so badly. Will a bad relationship with China serve Canada's national interest in anyway?

Canadian leaders always boast about Canadians' humanitarian spirit, their lofty moral standards, and many Canadians are proud that they are generous, caring, civilized, 'not like the Americans'. Now that there's a severe natural disaster in China, why is Canada so indifferent? Why does Canada hate China so much. What did China do to Canada?

As a Chinese Canadian, I am very very disappointed by Stephen Harper, his party, and his government. SHAME ON CANADA!

What I can assure Mr. Harper, is that, if he keep ignoring what is happening in China, keep ignoring what we as Chinese Canadians feel, I am not going to ignore him. If he fail our trust, I will NEVER EVER vote for him and his party again, simply because I can not trust a bunch of cold-blooded, indifferent primates. I am sure that most of the Chinese Canadians are on the same page with me.

I strongly urge that,

CANADA SHALL DO SOMETHING TO HELP CHINA!
CANADA SHALL HELP CHINESE PEOPLE IN THE RESCUE / RELIEF EFFORTS!

Hi, Allan;
I understand your disappointment! As a Chinese-Canadian you wish your new country would feel more compassionate, especially the government of Canada.
When at an earlier post I listed all the countries and organizations that contributed, I had noticed the absence of Canada. I wasn't disappointed, because this list is only the beginning... surely Canada will step up to the plate and donate whatever is necessary, be it skilled teams, trained dogs, medical professionals, aid workers or just some tents, blankets, clothing, food etc. In absence of such help money is usually helpful for rebuilding, repairing etc.

I went on the web and searched: Canadian aid to China...

Here my first find: http://www.worldvision.ca/give-a-gif...ocksChina.aspx

World Vision: The Canadian government has announced that it will match private donations to help survivors of the emergencies in China and Myanmar.

Read this:
Canada will provide financial aid to China in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that hit southwest China's Sichuan Province on Monday, Minister of International Cooperation Bev Oda said Thursday.

The federal government will match private donations made to aid groups working on disaster relief in China, she said.

"We're constantly talking with the organizations on the ground and we're going to be responding as they assess their needs and get their requests into us," Oda told reporters in Ottawa.

Meanwhile, local governments and the public also offered financial help to China. The Ontario provincial government announced Thursday it would provide 1 million Canadian dollars (about 1 million U.S. dollars) to China. Premier Dalton Mcguinty expressed condolences for the victims and solicitude for survivors Monday, immediately after the earthquake happened.

"We know that every citizen of our world is a neighbor. So we stand with our Chinese neighbors in their time of need," he said.

Canadian public have been active in donating to support the earthquake relief work. More than 500,000 Canadian dollars (500,000 U.S. dollars) has been collected up to Thursday, according to the Canadian Red Cross.

There you see, Allan, it is not as bleak as first imagined. I can not believe that Canada would ignore the Chinese people in need.

Thanks for bringing your concerns to our attention. At least I could satisfy myself knowing we are still good and compassionate people.

To those who might wonder if China would help in case Canada or other countries are in similar trouble: After Katrina hit the US, China sent the US US$5 million in cash, plus a Boeing-747 charter freighter plane full of relief stuff such as things from tents, small-size petroleum generators, bed sheets to children garment, to help. I mean she was really trying to help. (And, FYI., the US just send China USD 500,000 this time, even when the earthquake is the most severe natural disaster that'd happen on earth.) China is so friendly, that when similar tragedy happens in some other parts of the world, she would offer generous help without thinking twice. And on the other hand, from what I perceive, when such a tragedy happens, China would tend to be self-reliant, and asking for out-side world's help would be the last thing do do.

I think a country's assistance under such a circumstance is not a matter of money or something, the baseline is that it's a matter of showing its sympathy and good-will.

Glad to see that finally the government of Canada did something, which is a good move.

allanallan,
Hi, As you probably know China has allowed some number of earthquake experts to enter china and help in uncovering the burried victims .At the same time some doctors flew in from Russia.
Though I agree with you ,Chinese are very independnt and don't usually ask for help.

The One-child policy causes extra anguish

WUFU, CHINA -- After their daughter was born, Bi Kaiwei and his wife, Meilin, decided to adhere to China's one-child policy and its slogan, "Have fewer kids, live better lives."

For them and other couples who lost an only child in this week's massive earthquake, the tragedy has been doubly cruel. Robbed of their sole progeny and a hope for the future, they find it even harder to restart their shattered lives, haunted by added guilt, regret and gnawing loss.

"She died before becoming even a young adult," said Bi, an intense, wiry chemical plant worker, standing beside the grave of 13-year-old Yuexing -- one of dozens sprinkled amid fields of ripened spring wheat and newly planted rice. "She never really knew what life was like."

Yuexing, a bright sixth-grader, was in school when Monday's quake struck, bringing the Fuxin No. 2 Primary School crashing down, killing her and 200 other students. Teachers had locked all but one of the school's doors during break time, parents said, leaving only a single door to escape through.

Many among the more than 22,000 people killed were students in school. Nearly 6,900 classrooms collapsed, government officials said yesterday.

It was seen as an admission that highlighted a chronically underfunded education system, especially in small towns, and compounded the anger of many Chinese over the quake.

In Wufu, a farming village two hours north of the Sichuan provincial capital of Chengdu, most of the dead students were a couple's only child -- born under a policy launched in the late 1970s to limit many families to one offspring. The policy was meant to reign in China's exploding population and ensure better education and health care.

The "one-child policy" has been contentious inside China as well as out.
The government says it has prevented an additional 400 million births. But critics say it has also led to forced abortions, sterilizations and a dangerously imbalanced sex ratio as local authorities pursue sometimes severe birth quotas set by Beijing, and families abort girls out of a traditional preference for male heirs.

The policy is law but there are exceptions.

Farther down the lane from where Yuexing is buried, 10 more graves were laid out, some accompanied by favourite items -- textbooks for English and music, a pencil box, a Chinese chess set. At one, a grandmother threw herself to the dirt and wailed as her husband lit a handful of "spirit paper" believed to comfort the dead in the afterlife.

Another bereaved parent, Sang Jun, stood where his daughter, Rui, is buried, a simple mound of dirt beside his quake-shattered farmhouse. The house is surrounded by burned bushes -- a traditional disinfectant.
"The house is gone and the child is dead," said Sang, who wore a T-shirt and plastic sandals. His parents, both in their 70s, looked on with tears in their eyes.

Resistance by ordinary Chinese has forced Beijing to relax the policies, allowing many rural families to have a second child if the first was a girl. But in Wufu, the family planning committee seems to have prevailed on most families to stop at one child. Slogans daubed on boundary walls and houses all along the rutted country road leading to Wufu call on families to "stabilize family planning and create a brighter future."

Standing in the rubble of the school holding his daughter's ID and a posed shot taken at a local salon, Bi -- pronounced "Bee" -- said starting a new family, either by having another child or adoption, is simply imponderable.

My heart goes out to those parents! I wish I knew something soothing and uplifting to say.

A personal story of one man determined to help:

LUCHI, China — Hao Lin had already lied to his wife about his destination, hopped a plane to Chengdu, borrowed a bike and pedaled through the countryside in shorts and leather loafers by the time he reached this ravaged farming village. A psychologist, Mr. Hao had come to offer free counseling to earthquake survivors.

He had company. A bus load of volunteers in matching red hats was bumping along the village’s rutted dirt road. Employees from a private company in Chengdu were cleaning up a town around the bend. Other volunteers from around China had already delivered food, water and sympathy.

“I haven’t done this before,” said Mr. Hao, 36, as he straddled his mountain bike on Saturday evening. “Ordinary people now understand how to take action on their own.”

From the moment the earthquake struck on May 12, the Chinese government dispatched soldiers, police officers and rescue workers in the type of mass mobilization expected of the ruling Communist Party. But an unexpected mobilization, prompted partly by unusually vigorous and dramatic coverage of the disaster in the state-run news media, has come from outside official channels. Thousands of Chinese have streamed into the quake region or donated record sums of money in a striking and unscripted public response.
.....
“This is a significant turning point for China,” said Bao Shuming, a senior research coordinator for the China Data Center at the University of Michigan. “This is going to dissolve some boundaries between the government and the common people. People are becoming more educated and organized, and society is becoming more open.”

Survivors Rescued 8 Days After China Quake

CHENGDU, China — Eight days after a massive earthquake struck southwest China, 129 students and 10 teachers were rescued in an isolated small town in Wenchuan County, Chinese state media reported Tuesday.

Early reports about the rescue in the town of Yinxing, carried by the official Xinhua news agency, provided few details about the condition of the students or the circumstances of their rescue, except to say that they were ferried to Chengdu, Sichuan’s provincial capital, aboard eight military helicopters, and taken immediately for medical care.

Later reports said that 1,100 troops had been dispatched to the 60-mile-long valley surrounding Yinxing village, and were proceeding from hamlet to hamlet, intensifying search and rescue efforts in an area that appears to have been largely overlooked in the initial emergency response to the earthquake.
