Alberta rednecks are rough with their kids to toughen them up, the easteners that live in Alberta are just not used to that type of behaviour.

In Alberta the farmers feel that kids are a cheap labour source so they treat them rough so that they will be safe in the fields as they are forced harvest the land in Alberta they call forced child labour "Chores" and at the end of the day they are welcomed to be part of the family and treated like adults so they will be happy to continue to work the fields.
It's not just Alberta, my guy could drive a tractor at the age of 6 and was digging graves by 12 to help out. Survival on a farm can be hard. Now a days farms are run like a "business" but back in the day, not so much.

Moving right along.....

You got that right Cap'n. I'm not sure that corporal punishment is the best form of punishment BUT if it's administered in a reasonable manner for appropriate offenses then I think other people should just MYOB.

I'm not sure it's an issue of what type of punishment but, as you suggested, the method by which it's administered that's the important part. I think as long as we're not talking about something egregiously heavy handed or inhumane, the important part in punishing, or consequences, is to correct bad behaviour. Depending on what that behaviour is, sometimes a harsher consequence is needed. If a child is doing something that could be dangerous, you definitely want a consequence that makes an impact.

My only issue with physical punishment, and it's a very, very minor overall issue, is that I think there is a tendency to use it as retribution. In other words, the kid is pissing you off so you give him or her a swat. Now, not life changing damaging for that to happen for the most part, but really what's being imparted to the child? Don't piss off Mom or Dad. That in and of itself might be enough to set them on the straight and narrow. Or you could just be teaching them to circumnavigate Mom or Dad and do what they want anyway, because the consequence to them won't be related to their behaviour but to Mom or Dad's behaviour. Just my thoughts on it.

Lemme 'esplain this to ya LM.

Ya see, here in Wild Rose country, we see a problem - we solve it.. We don't have endless meetings to discuss the formation of steering committees to speculate on the potential effects on the feelings of ballet students on the best solution.

When faced with a problem, the issue is delineated, best solution decided upon and then the problem gets solved.... Anytime you feel that you have a problem, you just give me a call.. I'll pack-up my tool box and come by and solve it for ya.

FYI - my tool box has one item - a hammer... I'm guessing that it will be the best solution to deal with whatever issue you have going on

Well when dealing with a tool...use a tool, seems logical.

Really, really unfortunate for that poor woman. Every time something of this nature surfaces it takes me back a few decades to those children who accused their daycare providers of using them for devil worship. A horrendous case with many lives destroyed.

Apparently, it is still possible to do so today with similar lies.

The problem when dealing with children, is that we must always err on the side of caution. We would never leave a vulnerable being with someone who could potentially harm them. If we di,d and they were then harmed, it would be impossible to live with the guilt.

One of the ways around this now, and I like the idea, are cameras for parents. Parents can use their smartphones to see their child at any time of the day. It provides security on both sides.

Justice will be done, one way or another but what an horrendous thing to have happen to one's life.

Erring on the side of caution is covered in due process. The courts of this land concluded that the assumption is innocence, period. The vulnerable are of every age group.

“They set out to destroy Mrs. Preece and in so doing destroyed her business, her reputation and her right to life free from this type of harassment. I also find the conduct of these former employees as immature and ignorant while in the gallery and especially while Mrs. Preece was on the stand.”

So, gosh, guess the judge needs to take the next step. It's possible for a judge to lay charges, so why doesn't he. Even in a civil capacity he could still lay charges. Sometimes one needs to action on conscience and forget about political correctness.

By doing nothing he caused an injustice to the false accused.

Due process in Canada is a farse.
