The position does seem to get a lot of money for a what it is supposed to do. It is supposed to be ceremonial, is it not? Not sure how travelling all over the world is a ceremony.

It's a bit sad that it's 2005 and Canadians never matured beyond the point of deference to unelected authority.

Yeah, 'cause we all know how I never ever question the people in charge.

She has a staff that deals with constitutional matters. We'd be paying them anyway. She has a staff that deals with PR stuff. We'd be paying them anyway. She has a staff that looks after her official residence. It's a government building, complete with offices, so we'd be paying them anyway too.

Her overspending is really limited to staying in hotels that were a little too fancy according to some, but they did fall within official guidelines.

Just like any other government department, the Governor General gets a budget. The way government budgets work, if you want as much or more the next year, you spend it all. If your budget is $19 million and you only spend $15 million, you will find your budget cut to $15 million the next year. Since expenses tend to go up and down, but rise overall, you spend your budget so you get at least as much the next year. It's a bad system, one that encourages waste, but it's a system we share with most other developed nations.

Clarkson, at least, did something with the money. She got off her ass and went out and promoted Canada. She made a point of getting the world to understand that we are far more than a source of raw materials and hockey players.

The guy before her would have had a similar budget. All he did was sit on his ass and host the annual Easter egg hunt. How come nobody went after him?

I don't know why but i can tell you the majority of people in our country probably have no idea what she does  Maybe this new gal should do a little PR that might help

Maybe they should teach this stuff in school and run a series or two about how our government works on TV. Hardly anybody knows how this stuff works.

She's a journalist, so you'd likely want Staples as the sponsor. Besides, if I see that dorky Canadian Tire couple too much more, I'm liable to go mad.

The latest one really drives me scooters. His spring maintenance on 4-wheeler apparently consists of making sure the battery is charged.

If you don't know what the GG does, perhaps you should do some research before shooting off your uninformed mouth.

To claim the budget is too high without even knowing what it includes is a bit mindless, in this era when you can do a simple net search to find out. Lazy stupid opinionated people don't help any.

I was referring to skill sets, Extrafire. That was pretty clear by my post.

Clarkson wasn't a bad GG either. She performed the PR job just fine. We discussed that though...if she would have been taking business leaders on her junkets and presenting Canada as a one dimensional coutry where all that mattered was money and everything was up for sale, the radical right would have loved.

Canada is not a one-dimensional nation though, so Clarkson chose to present the artistic side of Canada to the world. For that the radical right villified her.

Let's see,,,,,Skills required for the post of GG,,,,,Read a speech that someone else wrote,,,,,Look good. Yep, that's basically it. I suppose most journalists could qualify. But then, most anyone could. She isn't supposed to be a PR person, just a figurehead. As far as how she did, well, she went on international junkets that accomplished absolutely nothing, spending like she had the keys to the treasury of some banana republic, and the rest of the world were very aware that's what she was doing, so as far as PR is concerned, she embarrased us.

(Our former PM used to take businessmen on junkets all over the world and called it "Team Canada", and claimed that they were making lots of great business deals, but that was a waste of taxpayers money too. Deals aren't made that way, and we all know it. Maybe that's where Clarkson got her inspiration. The right [radical right to you] and a lot of the center and left were also ticked off about that)

[quote="Extrafire If memory serves, only the current one, and she was the worst GG in my memory.

I'm curious why you think she was such a bad GG.

Are there specific things that she did, or didn't do, that make you feel that way?[/quote]

Didn't do? No, there isn't much to do in the first place [read a speech, look good] and she did that, and did it well too.

Did do? Her spending sprees were a national embarrasment.

Why does Canada need a Representative to the Queen?

Why is it ok to seperate church from state but not the Queen from state? Not all of us are of British ancestry. Some of us have roots in other countries (i.e. Ireland).

Then it's settled. If it's ok for Canada to keep it's ties to the Queen, then so be it, the US will keep it's Pledge of Allegiance with reference to "A Nation Under God". Anyone wanting to become a US Citizen will need to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

RE: 'Canadians will fall

The Queen does not preach religious bs when she is in country even though she is the head of the Church Of England.

Anyone wanting to be Canadian has to pledge loyalty to the Queen/King of Canada. The Queen/King are real and unlike unproven supernatural non existant "god".

"From this day forward, I pledge my loyalty and allegiance to Canada and Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada. I promise to respect our country's rights and freedoms, to uphold our democratic values, to faithfully observe our laws and fulfill my duties and obligations as a Canadian citizen."

No mention of God there. Thats the diference, we do not swear to a mythical creature unlike America to be a citizen.

There is no contest here. I'd rather pledge Allegiance to God than some elderly lady in England.

I thought American's pledged allegiance to the flag, which is purely a symbol of the country, whereas Canadians have our monarch, who is a person.

Whatever, because I've never pledged allegiance to a flag or a country or a monarch.

For those Americans who rabidly defend the pledge of allegiance, I'd ask: how many of you know what you've actually committed to do?

It is an disgrace that we make people pledge allegiance to some inconsequential old lady in England. What a farce! Surely we've outgrown the concept of "royalty" by now, haven't we?
