Apparently you voted in the poll? I don't think you can see the results without voting. Okay, so I voted and now I see the results. How come LLWD is not on this poll, either? What's going on, here?
I'm rather tired so I doubt I'll make much sense, but I wanted to talk about the LLWD video being absent from the VH1 Top 40 of the year. I asked this on MJ's (and I don't know if anyone answered - because I left): was any other song/video that had the credentials of LLWD left off the list? I. e., was there any other song this that made #1 on VH1 more than once, and was on the Top 20 for 20 weeks, that didn't make the countdown?
I don't think we ever talked about this so I'm talking about it now, half a day late. I know you were as surprised as I was.
There is one thing that I've seen happen many times on MJ's. People don't know the reasons for something (like this). So they make up reasons. And I swear, within half an hour, everyone is talking about these basically fictional reasons like they're facts. (It's similar to the way rumors spread.) I believe more than one person thought that because Kris lacks "media exposure," that is the reason VH1 left him off the list. First of all, I think whenever anyone talks about Kris and his lack of media exposure, it's just a veiled form of fanwarring. Fans of another idol have been comparing the media exposure of the two of them and finding Kris lacking for about a year and a half. It is a constant refrain. Virtually everything, all the time, is put down to media exposure, or lack of it, there. By a certain faction.
Anyhow, this got repeated a few times, so I suggested there were others who made the list whose media exposure is not high. Mainly because it's true, but also because I don't buy that speculation as to why Kris was not on the list (for one thing, LLWD has been on several year-end "top" lists, so I guess those media outlets didn't get the memo). I mentioned Jack Johnson and I forget who else - people you don't see on TV or in the gossip columns a lot. A Kris fan then pointed out that JJ does have a lot of exposure because his tours do really well. I don't disagree (I'm assuming it's true), but that has nothing to do with media exposure. Another Kris fan then stated that Kris has also had exposure from his recent tour, and the first Kris fan stated that neither the BNL nor the Lifehouse tours sold well. The second fan pointed out that Kris has had a lot of recent media exposure, and the first fan found fault with that, as well.
Etc.
At this point, I was also in the argument, but I bowed out before long. Because by then I could not see how Kris not being on the VH1 Top 40 countdown was somehow related to the fact that some of Lifehouse's tour dates were not sold out. It seemed ridculous.
To me, this is what happens when someone with an insupportable conclusion based on a shaky premise tries to defend it to the death. Instead of just saying, "Oh, I could be wrong." "Maybe it's more complicated than that." "I hadn't thought of that." etc. I. e., accepting that they don't (and can't) know everything.
I don't know what you think, but it's been my policy for a while now to automatically question these guesses people make on MJ's blog about everything - guess that, two days later, they are referring to as foregone conclusions. (I. e. "I thought we agreed that the reason this happened was...") (Nope. I didn't agree. I do not agree. I can say, "I don't know." and feel perfectly okay with that.)
So I don't know the reason, or reasons. Thing is, I noticed a while ago that VH1 isn't especially enamored of Kris. Or maybe I'm assuming Jim Shearer (I think that's the DJ's name?) is representing the VH1 viewpoint in some of the things he says. I remember him telling Adam that on AI he was miles above the others in the Top 10. I'm not sure if it was he or someone else who referred to the others as "still swimming in the kiddie pool." I think Kris had a video on the Top 20 countdown at the time. Apparently Shearer or his producer weren't too concerned about alienating Kris's fans. Anyhow, the disrespect was probably inadvertant, but odd, anyhow.
PS - I forgot to talk about the Simon Cowell thing.
I always hate to read the prejudiced views of musicians about the contestants on AI. I'm surprised some of these people, who I admire (some, anyhow), are so closed minded about newcomers or hopefuls (I assume they were also newcomers and hopefuls, once). Because that's all some of these contestants are. Talented people looking for a break. I agree some are hacks, but some are not, that's all. It always makes me frustrated to read stuff like that.
As for their remarks about Simon, I'm surprised they were so vocal. I also often wonder what Simons's qualifications are. Or what makes him an authority. But it's not the US Olympics of Singing, and it doesn't really matter. Because it's just show business. He has succeeded in making people believe he's an authority, and in the great snake oil selling sweepstakes, he has gotten the suckers to buy what he sells.
PPS - I think Tiger92 has snuck back on to MJ's blog using an alias. Pretty sure I recognize that delightful writing style.
