About Reed, not sure I bought the little sub-plot on the Wednesday night episode, but hey, it's Idol, they're always trying to make us buy stuff without us asking too many questions.

Creighton is the "starving artist" from New York. Colton is the one whose sister was eliminated last night. I'm not sure who the guy with the Craig Sharpe (wow, I did not even remember that one!) eyes is, Eben maybe? The teenager?

Last night's episode was really good, lots of great group performances. I understand why they had trouble cutting people. I also liked the little bit we heard from Haley (Haley!) Johnson, we hadn't heard her before. Heejun was less snarky last night and a little more likeable on the whole! Not that I don't like his snarky side, I just want to see that he actually takes this competition seriously.

I can't believe I forgot to talk about Adam Brock yesterday. If Joshua Ledet is Jacob Lusk 2.0, Adam is Gokey 2.0. He's kind of annoying so far. Anyway, I think they'll have some interesting people in the top 24, it'll depend on who actually makes it to the top 12 to see if the season will be good or not.

I think the eye guy with C. Sharpe-ish eyes was Jonathan? Johnny? Anyhow he got the boot last nite.

As to Creighton Fraker...I know who he is, now. Oh boy, I hate his vocal tone like poison. Horrible.

I don't think I can keep people straight...not sure who Adam Brock is.

There were some good performances and it IS Vegas but I have to say, I don't like all the stagecraft and lighting so soon - and it seems like there's more to come, next week. I mean, you don't get to see people unadorned and I find it distracting. Go back to the old way.

Thanks, missaddicted, for clarifying who the contestants are. Colton...his sister had so little screen presence...can kinda see why she was out. As for him, I honestly don't like his voice, either. I mean, I don't know. There are "Idol" voices and there are what I think of as "band" voices - and sometimes I'll think, "This person does not have a very good-sounding voice, but many bands have lead singers who are no better." So I sometimes find it hard to really judge the singer's potential.

As for what my ear, alone, likes, well - not him, too much.

I agree Hee Jun has the potential to be amazing or super, super annoying. So far amusing wins out. But we'll see.

There are a few promising peeps, lots of filler, but yeah no one is at the head of the pack for me right now.

What do you make of the add another guy thing? Who do you think it will be? The guy who kept singing as his group member fainted on stage, the annoying cowboy kid, the guy I can't remember or the cute little kid? um, yeah I'm afraid.

Adam Brock is a giant no for me tho. NO.

and yeah Ross, giant red 'I will destroy your computer or die trying' warning where the picture used to be.

...If it wasn't for Michael Slezak to look forward to I don't know if I'd be able to get into this season. I'm not criticizing the season - I haven't even seen it enough to do that. I'm just not into the show yet.

I found this new song sung by Kalan Porter and kind of like it. On someone else's CD - with various vocals, I guess.

*knocks on screen* Hello? Anybody...?

I missed the first 3 or 4 guys. Came in on Jeremy Rosado and I'll give my impressions...

I thought he was mediocre. Didn't agree with the judges. "Not bad" is as good as I can say.

Aaron. Randy said "Beautiful vocals." and "Mad vocals." I thought he was overpimped. If you sing runs, and that style of r&b in general - you really need to be great and sound almost flawless. Because the style is kind of predicated on being impressive is a certain way. Like Jennifer Hudson. Whatever you think of the style, it's just something you can't be "pretty good" at.

Chase Likens. Ryan calls him "this season's country crooner." (There needs to be one every season now?) In my opinion, another mediocre voice. (I know most of these people are semi-amateurs so maybe I'm being too hard on them. I don't know.) He has some indefinable thing, onstage presence, whatever, that made me feel I like him. Some performers have that. As a singer...not so much. Just okay. Confident onstage and easygoing, though.

Heejun Han. I guess he's okay when he doesn't try to power-sing. He started out well but got weak when he tried to soar. "Smooth as silk" says JLo. "You can blow." My reaction to him was closer to: "You blow." Amusing kid, not a great singer.

Joshua Ledet. He's undeniably good at this kind of singing. Personally, I don't really like it. Also, I don't know how popular it is now. It's been a while since Fantasia was the Idol winner. I wouldn't mind if they outlawed this whole singing style. So I guess I'm not a good judge.

By the way...aren't the judges just overpimping everyone again this season? I'm not hearing anything all that different. Even when they're mildly critical they're so nice about it. I think if you're going to give people all-out praise, you have to also give all-out criticism when it's called for. I still don't think people who depend on the audience liking them, in order to make their living (JLo, S.T.) are going to risk being seen a s mean, nasty, etc.

Creighton Fraker. He's good, I still am not fond of the high voice or the tone (pinched sound in the troat, singing through the nose, etc.) But he was actually better than a lot of them.

Phil Phillips. I'm sorry I have to be so negative about all these guys, but I don't like his voice, either. I don't know if I could warm to it, like, ever. I don't mind different or quirky voices. Just my personal reaction. I think he has some singing style, but the voice is really kinda not nice.

And the final surprise is.. Jermaine. I don't know what to say -- actually pretty good. On the other hand, not that wonderful.

I have a problem with the musical taste of the show the past season and this season. The show just has so much cheese, now. It's hard for me to think it has much to do with me or the kinds of music I seem to like. :/ Anyhow, I really seem to notice this shift to the Velveeta side.

Oops, I forgot Eben. He looks about 11. I hope he's voted off, but the audience seems to love him like another Scotty. (He sounds more like Aaron Kelly.) That whole thing was way off key, anyhow.

Hey ross! Sorry, I didn't have time to post before! And also, besides from what I wrote on twitter last night, I didn't really have that much to say about the show last night. Except that I like the new set, it's pretty cool.

The guys were all varying kinds of "meh", but I liked Creighton and Phillip the most. And Reed and Eben were the worst. You're lucky you missed Reed ross, he was really awful.

My prediction for the 5 who go through with the audience's votes: Phillip (he at least stoods out a bit in this "meh" crowd), Heejun (because he's fun and his voice is not bad either), Joshua (seems to be really loved but I can only think of Lusky Stank when I hear him), Colton (seems to have a fanbase from last year) and Jermaine (because he was the "surprise"). We'll see tomorrow how it goes.

I had more hopes for the girls but then I saw some song spoilers and I'm not so sure anymore. Lots of the "same old, same old", if you know what I mean. Oh and apparently, 2 girls are singing the same song. Yup.

You're right, the new set seems pretty cool. I of course have already stated my preference for not having the grand production and huge audience during Top 24 rounds and before. But Idol doesn't care what I think. (I'm not really sure why a huge audience even gathers to see people who are mostly going to be eliminated - well, half of them. Personally I'd wait until the Top 10 shows to be guaranteed some decent entertainment.)

I guess Seacrest at least did dress down a bit, indicating we had not really hit the big time, yet. Or else he was afraid to dress better in case Sascha Baron Cohen might be hanging around to throw Bisquick on him again. idk.

I guess we disagree about Creighton and Phillip. Anyhow I'm sure we'll be seeing plenty more of them.

Those predictions for who will make it through all make sense...on the other hand, like I said, the applause for Eben Whatsisname (*and he's only 15!*) was deafening, so....well, let me go take a quick look at DialIdol and see what's up...

And...I'm back. Here is what DialIdol tells us:

So America voted and I have to say that they did a pretty decent job. There are a lot of good people. I'm kind of excited?

Yeah, I'm glad DialIdol wasn't too accurate! It does seem like a pretty good season for some reason (no rhyme intended). I don't particularly love any of the guys, maybe this season I'll actually have a girl favorite for a change.

The Vision Of Love hits radio tomorrow and the cover art is here (along with an article en francais):

American Idol – Saison 8 : Kris Allen revient avec ‘The Vision Of Love’.

Is it unusual for it to be going to radio 3 weeks before it's available for purchase, or is that standard?

I also noticed this when I met Kris, but he has long fingers. (See his thumb, in the photo.) Anyhow, it must come in handy for a musician. Just thought I'd mention that.

I can't say I'm super excited about this season so far (and I'm definitely not excited about this week's theme), but it does have the potential to not be a total trainwreck. There are some very good people in the top 13, but I'm not sure there's anyone in that bunch I would want to buy music from. Well, last year, I was definitely not on the Haley train at this point, so who knows. Now I'm excited about Haley's new music and from what I've heard, her first single is really good.

I'm even more excited about Kris' new music. I LOVE The Vision Of Love! I listened to it a few times earlier and now it's stuck in my head! The cover art is great (sexy Kris!), thanks for posting the article ross.

You're welcome. ;)

I thought LLWD was a seriously good pop tune but I wasn't in love with it like I am with this song. And like you, when I listened to it a few times it was stuck in my head...and sometimes I don't like for that to happen, if a tune is annoying. lol. But this is anything but, it's gorgeous. Also, the range is so good. From the falsetto to the low notes at the end that are so unexpected and perfect.

This season...well, I have to start giving it a chance because I haven't really been paying attention. I don't see any especially exciting people and no people that stand out as stars, to me. I kind of liked...Holly? Maybe? Something in the voice was compelling.

I missed tonight's show. So I have no opinion at the moment. How did it go? Anyone jump ahead of the pack? Holly's been one I'm kinda watching at this point.. Holly, Jessica, and Philip hopefully they weren't awful tonight, lol.

Vision of Love is gorgeous. I was afraid I'd like the remix better than the actual song -- because the remix is all kinds of amazing - but I think the real version is even better. It's got a great dynamic happening within the song, and that falsetto. Yikes. Kris has a real gift for putting a little heart and a little soul into everything he sings.

Hey all, here we go again with another season of Idol live shows so its time again to chime in with our particular take on each performance. Here is my review of the top 13 tonight...

Joshua - a fairly solid opening performance. I am not sure if I like him or not yet, he has had some good showings leading up to tonight but to use Randy's famous words...not good for me tonight. I don't think he will be going home though.

Elise - I thought she did a good job overall but had a few weak spots. The judges really tossed her under the bus for what was not a bad job. I don't think she is the type of singer to benefit from doing Whitney so hopefully she stays around so we can see.

Jermaine - I like his personality but I don't think he will be around for too long unless it's Barry White week all the time. He got into the top on a sympathy vote and after watching him tonight I doubt that will keep him in it.

Erica - EVP as Ryan has named her is definitely one of my favs. She has amazing tone and range and seems to have music in her soul. Her performance tonight was one of the best.

Colton - Probably the second best of the guys tonight. He has an edge and originality and I think he will be going far if not a contender for the win though it is early days yet.

Shannon - I know this young girl can sing from the shows leading up to tonight but she just did not show it. Obviously very nervous and it hurt her on pitch and, well, everything else. It would be a shame to see her go without giving her a chance to become comfortable and confident but compared to others tonight its hard to decide if she warrants the chance.

Heejun - He gave a solid showing. It was not a huge standout but not gonna put him in danger either. I am always amazed at how good his singing voice is compared to his talking voice...and he is funny which will earn him a few votes.

Skylar - Who would have thought a country girl would do such a good job with R&B. I have to put her in the same class as Heejun...not the best but not in danger of leaving either.

DeAndre - Mr Brackensick makes me sick! I am not sure why he is in the 13 or why the judges keep pimping this guy. I am guessing it is his marketability to the young girls because it sure isn't a great voice. I don't like his sound or his style or his hair!

Hollie - Another very good showing. She has a powerful voice with great control and I think she could probably sing any genre. I haven't become a huge fan yet but if she can give consistent performances near the best of the night she will be here for a while.

Jeremy - J-Lo's Jer-bear did well tonight considering I haven't really liked him so far. It will be interesting to see if he can get any stronger before he gets swallowed up by the real strong talent.

Jessica - WOW!! I have to say it again...WOW!! What an amazing job. She may not have hit every note perfect in the verses but she hit them all in the chorus and for the finish. Definitely the best of the night!!

Phillip - Another one like Colton. Very original and independent with an edge. I have to give him the nod for the guys though it was close. Hoping it will be a year for the rockers this time and if it is the 2 guys will be in it near the end.

Lots of real good talented vocalists this year. I can't wait to see them put to the real test of taking on different genres out of their comfort zone. I would have to agree with the judges that the girls took the night and I'm hoping all 6 stay.

Best girls - Jessica, Erica
Best boys - Colton, Phillip
In danger - Jermaine, Shannon, DeAndre

I think I'm getting singing competitions fatigue. Three in one season, it's way too many! I can't say I was impressed that much last night. Jessica was the best, without a doubt. The girl can sing, but she's maybe too perfect. She doesn't make me want to root for her. I prefer rooting for Hollie. She's more green, but I feel more authenticity from her. She was really good last night, though not perfect, and I prefer her tone compared to Jessica. The other girls were okay, except Shannon, who was awful. I like Erika, she has a great tone, but her song last night was super boring.

My favorite of the night was probably Phillip though. After all the karaoke performances, he was a breath of fresh air. Deandre was fun, but I don't like his voice. Also, I decided last night that I didn't like Colton. He's bland, looks like a poser and his voice is super whiny. Not a fan. Heejun is fun, but he's not that good of a singer. Jermaine should go home though. I didn't understand why they brought him back in the first place and he did not prove last night that he could be a contender.

sleepin in, I also missed the show - I also missed the results. missaddicted, I only watch Idol and I'm a little fatigued by it alone. I don't know why maybe I'll figure it out as time goes on. I think it's the return of Nigel, behind the scenes. I don't know, I don't really like a singing pageant, I like more of a music show. If you know what I mean.

Hollie was the one I liked last week, though to be honest I don't want another big-voiced girl singer to win Idol. Not that I mind big voices, exactly, but there's already enough confusion of "big" equating with "good" re singers, in the public consciousness. Singing loud is not hard if you have the voice for it, but singing beautifully, that is hard.

I think I found the reason why I can't really get into Idol this year. I've already found a singer to root for on a singing competition this year. It's the same guy from the Hedley video I posted a few weeks ago: Jean-Marc Couture. He's now the last guy standing on Star Académie (the guys and the girls compete seperately on Star Ac until the last show where it's the last guy vs. the last girl). That guy is so SO good and he's only 21. I hope his brilliant solo performance from last night makes it to youtube, but for now here he is singing with Jason Mraz:
