Canadian Idol Fans Watching American Idol

Yeah, this show is ridiculous.

The more I think about it, the more ridiculous it seems.

The whole show is about who will win. And here's the host, ignoring the current winner, who's standing right there. I mean, he's the American Idol, and he is standing right there in plain sight. On a show called American Idol.

What other show would ever do that? It's INSANE, people!!

I don't know if I can watch this nonsense again. Seriously. (ETA: Add to this, Randy, on the talk shows, floating the idea that the judges [i.e., the producers] should get to choose who will stay or go, in the future. If that happens, it'll be just another reason for me to tune out.)

I remember a plug Lee gave Seacrest last season. Seems ironic, now.

Fun fact: Lizzie was right behind Ryan's head.

The judges choose idea, they do that on SYTYCD, and sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad.. people vote and the judges pick from the bottom 3.. but if the judges fave consistently ends up in the bottom 3 the judges usually eliminate them.

I don't want Randy picking anything quite frankly. But I've watched the show so long I'll probably keep watching. I don't keep up with everyone, but it's nice for these struggling people to get a platform. You just have to remember that they're making a tv show, so they're going to go with whatever serves that purpose. They're not really all that interested in furthering careers (although they should be)

I just found out that one of the kids that was on Canada's answer to American Juniors - The Next Star -- kids auditioning have to be 15 and YOUNGER. You can imagine what ensues - but to be honest it reminded me of AI this year because they had them working with the contestants on songs throughout the show.

This is her a few years ago (2008 ) when she was 15
YouTube - ‪THE NEXT STAR - ALYSSA REID, TYSON KUTEYI - "GONNA MAKE U DANCE"‬‏

and she's starting to get airplay now.

Not sure what purpose it serves to change the rules after all these years. But I probably wouldn't watch, if that happened.

And obviously I'd have to try to enjoy following the careers of Pia, or Danny, or whomever the judges seem to love - instead of the people the voters like myself choose.

When I was little there was a show that had already been on for years - Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour. No judges. It was all audience vote. People voted by postcard.. It was an effective idea and Idol basically copied it. I think only one winner ever became a big star - Ann-Margret. And maybe a couple non-winners. It didn't matter - it was good entertainment.

I think they're taking themselves more and more seriously, on Idol. These people who were once flying by the seat of their pants, hoping people would watch their cheap little show. They never knew if they'd actually create stars or not. Now, because they got very lucky a couple or three times, they think we're morons, and they know everything. Well - good luck with that.

Kris did a great job!!! I loved him hugging all the army people. I don't have PBS at home, but of course, MJ had the video up super quick.

Also I thought it was cool that because Kris was part of the 'welcome home' segment, he was introduced by Colin Powell rather than Sinise and Mantegna. I just find that awesome. To be introduced by the former Secretary Of State (and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff). That's an honor. And it was a really great intro, too.

I've been thinking about the season that just ended. I was thinking how when the idol season is happening, so many people are talking about who's a good singer, and why. But after the season is over, it's not really about the same things; it's more about who you enjoy. Like, people can say Pia was a shocking boot, and all - because she has a strong voice and she looks like an Idol winner. But now, people aren't judging her as an Idol contestant. So people have to find her enjoyable. I'm not saying they won't - I have no idea. Just saying that it's no longer about the same things.

Okay, are you ready?

Yes, the world becomes wider. She still may become a superstar, but it's not going to happen next month.

Okay, are you ready?

Give me a week Ross. LMAO.

How about a long weekend? :p That article was actually from two years ago.

I suppose Lee deWyze saw an ad such as that, and thought, "Chicago auditions this year.. hey, why not? What have I got to lose?"

Another survey? Did they really listen to what people had to say last year? I'm not sure it's even actually worth filling that survey once again.

Hee! Couldn't bring myself to click on it.

It said:

"Is it your dream to be the next Kris Allen or Carrie Underwood? Or are you just street-rat crazy and want to be made fun of on national television? We have the info for you!"

I thought it was cool until I realized it was from 2009.

I never filled out one of those surveys, so I guess Season 10 is all my fault.

Everyone seems glad Scotty and Lauren opened strong well with their coronation songs. I'm glad for them, but it seems to me that if Scotty could do so well with such a lousy song, in country music, then country music coudn't be as hard for idols to break into as pop, or the other non-country, popular genres. I'm not sure this means (as some people are suggesting) that this means Idol has regained its momentum. I mean, it's not a country music show. Many of the listeners (such as me) are not interested in country.

Universal is new to Idol and they seem to be out to show how much better they can be at promotion than Sony. It already seems they are prouder of their Idol kids, and more willing to push them, than Sony has been for a while.

I don't even get why Scotty is popular, never mind Lauren. I feel most other seasons she would have finished about 8th or 9th place. But they seem to think she has something. Or, like I say, they're just new to this and willing to put the effort and money into promo, figuring they can make stars - as long as there is the Idol buzz to help.

Even though I think only the public can make a star, winning Idol tends to indicate a person has love from the public. So why not put some effort into building on that and striking while the iron is hot? I agree with that. I think there has been some stupidity in that area the past few years.

Anyhow, I don't get Scotty's broader appeal, except in a minor way as a nice boy next door - I doubt I ever will get it! I think he and Lauren could grow into their careers but right now I'm not very impressed by their musicianship, or even their singing. Sorry.

(I guess I didn't proofread my last post too well. :D)

It's nice you guys found a new idol to be fans of. It's good when that happens. Maybe next year, for me...though this show is not really holding my interest with the kinds of performers they feature now (Haley excepted - she's okay by me). Okay, so - tell me what you think about this.

Did a lot of the contestants seem boringly the same, to you, every week? As they did to me? It was like they - or the show - seemed to think their early performances were such genius that they didn't have any farther to go. I don't recall this, in past seasons. Maybe because when the judges suggested improvements - or were just critical - we expected improvements and often saw them. But it was really boring to me this season to see the same basic performances week after week from people like Scotty, Lauren, Stefano, Paul, and Jacob. James and Casey tried for variety but I felt they didn't really display the kind of talent I was hoping for, to pull off their stuff.

I felt the show was trying to psych the viewers out and make them think they were seeing incredible, better-than-ever talent (and I guess it worked) - while keeping many of the performers in very narrow slots - like Scotty - so that it would be almost impossible for them to make a false move. Because they didn't have to do anything very challenging to their limited talents. I think Lauren falls into this category, probably Stefano, Pia, and some others.

Granted the judges gave some of them minor criticism - but it seems, mainly the ones who didn't seem to be getting the votes, anyway - so it was safe enough to do. I realize I'm generalizing a bit.

Anyhow a lot of this made ths how seem too fake and controlled for me. Thoughts?

I read your post yesterday morning ross and I've been trying to find an answer since then, but I still don't really know what to say. The only thing I can think of saying is that the judging really sucked this year (don't we say that every year though?) and that the show totally felt scripted by Uncle Nigel. Or maybe I've watched Idoloonies too much. In any case, Idol didn't feel organic at all this year. So many things are wrong with Idol, but it seems that even when they're trying to fix them, they only make things worse. And they don't even seem to realize it. They can say that they got record numbers of votes this year all they want, but Idol wasn't that interesting this year. If I hadn't liked Haley starting at top 9 (or somewhere around that point, I'm not sure I even remember!), I would've been incredibly bored with this season.
