Are they sell outs because they go on American Idol and make their debut on tv? I don't think so. Why is singing on TV any less worthy than singing in a bar? Or putting out an Indie CD?
Appearing on TV is simply appearing before an audience. What artist would refuse to sing before an audience in a theatre? TV just magnifies that audience.
I always feel like questioning the whole concept of "selling out." I don't know when it started. A singer is either in the music business (a branch of show business), or not. If not, he/she is an amateur. If you're in the business, a professional, you may as well get your talent noticed and your music heard. However you can.
Since classical music or concert music was brought up, take a look at that. Is a concert pianist who aspires to play before huge audiences with the great orchestras, and aspires to a recording contract with a major label, considered a sell out? No way. So why is a pop musician who aspires to similar things a sell out?
End rant. lol
Tonight's show was pretty painful, overall. I don't know whether it was the Motown theme, or the Top 10 -- or the judges? -- or maybe I'm just having a bad day. But I was less than thrilled.
Okay: Matt. He was better than usual. I think for me his problem is he has one of those voices that comes very close to being very good, but is just not quite as good as it should be. That's pretty critical, I know. I don't know how else to put it. He seems nice. He's not going anywhere tomorrow.
Kris. What's with his always performing within the first half hour? I don't get that. Someone enlighten me. You alerted me to this, originally,
missaddicted. What do you make of it?
I smiled all the way through the preformance. I just totally love listening to this guy, plus I'm beginning to think he's an awesome person, as well. I don't know what Simon is trying to say to him, except to get rid of the very thing that makes him so likable. Kris, just keep being yourself, dude.
He did such great things with that song. He's more or less pitch perfect all the time. He's a fun performer, too. Great job.
Scott. I don't know what he's thinking. That was just not good. He's a sweet guy, I love him, but I think he should go soon. But...
Megan should go first. Not that she will. She reminds me of the Saturday Night Live sketch, The Thing That Wouldn't Leave.
Anoop. His voice is not warm, or thrilling, or interesting, or beautiful. It's good, maybe sometimes very good, that's it. I thought that was pretty, in spots, mostly boring. Sincere, anyway. His makeover is good, I have to say. Nice haircut.
Michael. I would rather see Megan go, since I loathe her performances, but he may be the one to go. He wasn't good.
Lil. I didn't agree with the judges that she looked good (her hair is short, so I guess that was a wig?). I feel a bit bad for her because this show is twisting her beyond all recognition. I didn't really love her at the start, but now I long for the original Lil. She just isn't a versatile performer who can succeed at the various theme nights. As herself, singing her favorite songs, I'm sure she's a solid artist. But going beyond that doesn't seem to work. She looks confused.
Adam. I knew he would pull it back this week. I didn't expect him to pull his bangs back, also. And to look like Kurt Russell (KR as Elvis, really).
I don't know. I felt something was missing. Besides nail polish. It was a very professional job, a good presentation. Maybe I'm not that crazy about the voice, sometimes. I don't really like tenors, usually. I thought it was very good but I didn't get the raving and hosannahs.
Danny. Danny is becoming sort of predictable. His voice is really great, though it sounded a bit ragged to me for the second week in a row. I like listening to him but watching him is a little tough. I don't get the hate, though; he seems like a nice guy. I think he lost ground this week.
Allison. Aka, SixteenyearoldAllison. In the pimp spot. And do ya think she was pimped enough by the judges? She's good, as well as being cute and charming, but I find myself a bit indifferent. I thought she was better last week.
Who's leaving tomorrow?
