Now that you mention it, I think so - the kid on the left is wearing a Patrick Brown jersey, so, yeah. I wasn't even paying attention - someone linked to the picture on twitter. And Kris did wear that green shirt that day.

Idol starts soon. I am so not into it. Convince me that I should watch it. I don't like their games. I don't want to participate. I doubt I'll vote.

This is what I say now, but I'm fickle.

I can't say I'm super excited about Idol this year, but I'll watch for sure. I don't think I could stay away, LOL. I'm not expecting to be blown away, but we'll see how it goes. In any case, as I've already told you guys, I won't be able to watch live on Wednesdays (well, I'll watch with just a bit of a delay probably) and I probably won't be able to watch live on Thursdays either (I'll be able to watch later, but it'll be with a longer delay). ross, you have to watch just so that you can discuss it with us!

Well, SleepinIn, here's another article about "that subject."

What 'Idol' needs to do in Season 10: End the rocker-boy reign - Idol Chatter: American Idol News, Rumors, & Information

This article is wrong in a lot of ways. I'm really getting sick of the way all this is going, and I may have to take a break.

For instance. Adam was never presented on American Idol as "a theatrical gay performer with one foot in dance music and one in glam-rock. " He wasn't identified as gay, and he didn't do dance or glam rock. He was the rocker. The rock god. So when people voted for him, they were not, in fact, voting for the gay-dance-rock-glam one.

I don't think the three winners are much alike, but even so, who says the winner of American Idol has to be a differnet sex or color or genre each time? The longer the show goes on, the less likely that is to happen. There are only two sexes, only a handful of races, and only a few genres, after all. Eventually it's going to repeat.

WAY TOO MUCH is being made over whether they play instruments. And I DO NOT GET how, in the world of pop music, playing an instrument, espeicially a guitar, is now some sort of NEGATIVE. WHAT?

HAS THE WORLD GONE MAD??

It's a shame Lee had to win and have all these comparisons made, when the other two are (to me) miles better. It seems to bring the other two down, when, after all, they've both achieved more. Now they're "just like Lee."

missaddicted, I suppose I should focus on the fun and the contestants, etc. For that, I can watch. But so much goes on I don't agree with, and it just gets worse all the time, it seems. There's something very screwed up about this show at its core.

It has been confirmed that a live DVD of Adam's Glamnation tour will be released sometime in the near future :p. According to RCA mod, it is in editing process.

As for season 10, I will watch the first few episodes to see all the nutty people that tried out lol. Without Simon, and Paula, and with the changes the producers have made, it has lost it's charm.

That's good for Adam and his fans. I like live albums a lot. (He sure has released a lot of music in a short period of time.)

It's interesting that Richard Rushfield has done research which refutes certain established theories about Idol voting. Texting is not a big enough part of the vote to make a significant difference, for example. I'm not surprised by these conclusions. I never put much stock in them. People just need to find reasons why someone they don't want to win, wins, I think.

The show might be good, this season, it's too early to tell. The audition part is probably my least favorite part. I loved this part on Canadian Idol, though. Wonder why? Partly it's the judges and Ben, but also I think CI does way better audition episodes. The way they put it all together.

What is with JLo's outfits? They're really old fashioned and sorta tacky. With her money, can't she buy some taste?

And Randy...oh, boy.

The wax figure on the left looks a lot like Seacrest. Very lifelike.

Ross you just have to accept it for what it is. Kelly got SO many negative comments about her album. I remember them. Carrie got tons of bad press about her live show. Ruben and Clay got so much crap - Clay for being nerdy but popular and Ruben for daring to win. as soon as there is an Idol winner there is a contingent of fans and media that are out to prove why they didn't deserve it. It happens every season. The newspapers and blogs are just looking for an angle to add to their Idol stories. Although Adam was portrayed as the ROCKER on the show. He actually never was. He's been able to make what he is what people want from him. And although he never said he was gay on the show...Did he really have to? I think it was pretty much a given. it just gave the press an angle to add to his story.

If three girl's had won in a row they would be wondering where the guys were.

yes, the judges are crazy and sometimes wrong..sometimes right..but remember at it's uncynical heart it is a show about discovering someone with a dream. hopefully someone we can root for, and post show like their music. I have found some people who's music I love, and some people I like on the show I never listen to again. sometimes there are just those special moments. like ANS, or Mad World or even Shane Wiebe's Darkness cover, that he kicked butt on after...(sorry Shane) being awful for SO many weeks.

*hops off soapbox...that really went on too long*

I just ignore the press that doesn't see the truth (ie. agree with me) :)

Ps. I agree CI did the auditions much better. and that's the producer guy?

Seriously the outfits alone this season will be worth making fun of :). What IS she wearing?

Okay..also I was glad Rushfield bright up the texting thing too. seriously... How many people are really power testing? Couple thousand? Their votes probably cancel each other out.

My point was that the article was seeing things in hindsight a bit, and, as they say, "hindsight is 20-20." Adam didn't seem really "alternative" on the show, musically or otherwise. I never thought he seemed like an unsfe choice - people only said that later. It's not the fifties. Even if people thought Adam was gay, Elton John and people like that are huge and no one cares. And he made it to #2, so I doubt people suddenly decided he was unsafe to vote for at the last minute, since they loved him all season.

I think Adam perpetuates a lot of these myths surrounding him. By his complacency, allowing people to say things that he should refute, and by his occasionally going the "I'm persecuted because I'm gay" route. He knows what works. I don't feel like going into it, though. The thing I find about him is that he has little ability to admit mistakes, and I think deep down that includes losing. I don't think he's fully accepted that. If he did, his fans would. Just a thought. Don't hate me.

Although Adam was portrayed as the ROCKER on the show. He actually never was.

Well, I didn't really mean he actually was, but he sang Satisfaction, Slow Ride, Cryin', and Born To Be Wild, so people figured he liked rock. I forget the point, though! Anyhow - I do remember he was compared to David Cook, at times, since he sang rock songs - but now Kris is being compared to Cook. I guess whatever is convenient to make a point.

*hops off soapbox...that really went on too long*

Nope, it didn't, it was good.

If three girl's had won in a row they would be wondering where the guys were.

Exactly!

and that's the producer guy?

Which one is the producer guy?

Okay..also I was glad Rushfield bright up the texting thing too. seriously... How many people are really power testing? Couple thousand? Their votes probably cancel each other out.

Doesn't that just figure? I knew that whole thing was bogus. Plus, the "teens texting" thing has now been more or less disproven as well, since teens don't make up a big % of the voters anyway.

This is supposedly the song Alex wrote with Kris? (#11?) I don't know. I read something about it on twitter but it might be a different one.

Alex Band (alex_band) on Twitter

This is why I hate these people:

An Idol far from fallen

I wish the AI people would at least pay attention to something besides statistics. This is also why many people think Hollywood kills your soul. I'm glad Kris moved back to Arkansas. I used to think he should stay in LA, but now, no.

Do you find it strange that idol is producing stuff like the welcome home special, and the Idol commercials featuring the winners, and then Ken Warwick says in a press conference that the voters get it wrong? This doesn't really add up, does it? Seems like the Idols are helping to sell the show, but the show is not helping to sell some of those Idols in return.

Elton John saw his popularity in the US plummet when he announced he was bisexual in the 1970's and he had to marry to a woman who was his close friend. He didn't come out as gay until his music career was well established. Others like Clay Aiken, Ricky Martin and Lance Bass were also closeted when they were clearly aiming for major success and only came out after their mainstream careers were over. Ricky Martin purposely flat-out denied that he was gay in interviews and portrayed himself as heterosexual in his songs and music videos. Why? Because it would have been career suicide for him to be openly gay. It would be great if we lived in a world where sexuality is not an issue, but we don’t. You obviously have a lot of negative feelings about Adam and his fans and you seem to be very bitter about Adam getting more attention than Kris, but I think you are taking it a bit far when you start pretending that openly gay artists do not face a real struggle to acheive any level of mainstream success in the US.

I think Adam perpetuates a lot of these myths surrounding him. By his complacency, allowing people to say things that he should refute, and by his occasionally going the "I'm persecuted because I'm gay" route. He knows what works. Has Kris ever admitted in interviews that releasing "The Truth" as his 2nd single was a huge career mistake?

I have to say that you are totally misunderstanding Adam. He has said many times that he never thought he would get that far in the competition. He also admits that he never would have landed a record deal without his exposure on Idol because he is too “out there”. He knows that he is very polarizing, and he understands why he lost to Kris. Seriously, most of Idol contestants and Idol fans already know that winning doesn't matter much as history shows that non- winners can have successful careers after Idol.

Can't go into it all, but Lance Bass, Ricky Martin: straight looking and acting acting guys whose whole marketing was as young, teen heartthrobs, based on looks. Career suicide to come out?Probably, under those circumstances. But obviously it was not career suicide for Adam to come out. It was expected. And not to take anything away, but was it even a choice? He was past 25 and had been in the business for like 9 years, never been closeted, so how could he had kept it a secret anyway? I give him a lot of credit for not hiding, I really mean it. But I'd also like to move past it.

Adam was successful on Idol (coming in second is successful) and he's still successful and popular, which is why I can't buy it when something goes against him and he blames it on homophobia. It's convenient, but is is accurate?

"He understands why he lost to Kris." No, he's rationalized it, I think. Notice how he never comes close to suggesting he lost just because Kris was better liked as a singer and performer. He's "polarizing," or his loss was anticipated because he "never expected to get as far as he did" - that's not modesty. It's more like a way of blaming people for not being open minded enough to accept someone like him. And no record deal pre-Idol because he's too "out there," not because his music at the time wasn't good enough, or whatever the real reason was.

It's all a way of saying, "If people don't like me as a singer or performer it's for some other reason than my singing or performing. It's because I'm polarizing/gay/wear makeup/am outspoken, etc." Maybe I'm the only one who notices this or finds it sad. His fans are similar and come up with a million excuses why people voted for Kris or "voted against Adam." Everyone else lost, too - Allison, Danny, Matt - but their fans haven't come up with a lot of nonsense and neither have they. It's just the way the cookie crumbles.

Adam is not a bad guy but he's just annoying, to me, with this childishness. Kris is no saint but he doesn't whine or make excuses. I admire and respect Adam for his musicianship, hard work, and success. But that's it.

Okay, then - Suck it up, princesses, and let's move on. :)
Sorry that was so long - I wanted to edit it but they won't let you edit after an hour. Again, I don't hate Adam, and I don't resent him. I was just trying to say, before, I think his attitude contributes to the whole way this didn't end when it should have. Not that he is a sore loser, but possibly he's a defiant type of person who doesn't really accept his limitations, and his fans can be completely single minded. Kris is a great and very talented guy with amazing stage skills, and a lot of people who have seen him and performers who've worked with him consider a very worthy winner. I don't think he deserves anything less than respect. Especially from Idol itself.

Kris is the type of performer who, the more you see and hear him, the more layers there are. If he won Idol for any "reason," this was, I think, the reason. Adam is like a flashy jewel with plenty of glitter and attention-getting skills, and Kris is like a gem, that grows in luster the more you look at it, and the more you look, the more you see. On a TV show like Idol, Kris showed only a few of his many layers but it was enough. People began to see he had them. If the show went on another year, he would have showed even more. I'm not sure Adam has a lot of layers - and there's nothing wrong with that - but I think he peaked a little soon, on the show, because he has his bigger but narrower persona and surface talent.
It's a very cool talent, but I do think he has to put on layers - on the surface - to appear to have layers. Kris just has a lot of sides. He was one of the better Idol contestants because he could approach most of the different genres with freshness and he had a lot of those genres in him. This is my honest belief in why people chose him, though I doubt it was conscious.

As for why he has not done as well post-Idol, sales wise, and in terms of attention, I don't even know, but I do think that Adam has had about 20 times more free publicity and for that he should be twenty times more successful and he isn't, quite. I also think the media was against him (Kris), when he needed it most. I have a feeling it won't matter in the long run. I think he's the type that is good and honestly talented and you can't say he isn't because after a while you look stupid saying it. He keeps proving it isn't true. So I think he'll be a success, and whether it's big or small, it's too early to say. But he's not going to have no career - of that I'm pretty sure. When the Idol smoke clears he'll still be as good as he is. His peers, also, have a lot of respect for him, and that can't hurt.

I wasn't crazy about the Alex band song either. Who went to Ryland's show? (I want names. lol) I wish Kris didn't have this (and one other) band member in another band. Be nice if they could all come on as permanent members. How big is Reel Big Fish, anyhow? I think I looked them up on twitter, once. Ithink they were more successful than I thought. It's amazing how many of these acts you never heard of are actually quite successful in their own right.

Well that is why I like him for sure. But, Adam has his own layers, they're just different. Kris does have a real depth as a performer that I don't think we've even really seen yet. So I get really excited about that too.

I think everyone but Katy (who might be working on her acting thing) Reel Big Fish is surprisingly big isn't it? Plus Ryland has a lot of friends in the industry. He's been really good to Kris. Just shows you though that to have a career in the music industry you don't necessarily have to be big in top 40. You won't maybe make as much money or be as famous.. but you can have a great career.

Which is what a lot of my favourite bands are doing anyway. There's only 40 spots in the top 40 after all. Everyone else is somewhere else and there are a lot more than 40 venues in the world.

Well that is why I like him for sure. But, Adam has his own layers, they're just different.

I probably don't know what the hell I'm talking about. So why do you thihnk Kris won, then?

I just felt Adam showed us his full bag of tricks by Rock Week and after that he was repeating himself. Kris's Heartless was pulled out late in the game and it was not just right because it was a tour de force musically, it was this other side of his personality - like, this is the same guy who sang To Make You feel My Love, that Simon called a tender puppy. And here he was all confidence and, "respect me, bitch." I didn't feel Adam revealed any new layers after a while. I'm not really saying he doesn't have layers. But musically he's a bit more predictable. His songs on the show went slow-fast-slow-fast-slow, and I remember thinking, "Hm. Very imaginative."

But I don't know and I just want to say THEY"RE BOTH GOOD. THEY BOTH DESERVED TO GET TO THE FINALE. I CAN'T LIE AND SAY I'M NOT GLAD KRIS WON BECAUSE I WANTED THAT. I VOTED!!! BUT LET'S NOT ARGUE ABOUT IT ANY MORE. It's my fault for making inflammatory statements about ADAM (true or not. lol). I have a big mouth but since nobody is on this thread, anyway, I figure it doesn't actually matter what I say.

I think everyone but Katy (who might be working on her acting thing) Reel Big Fish is surprisingly big isn't it? Plus Ryland has a lot of friends in the industry. He's been really good to Kris. I guess I meant, did any of the rest of the band go (who don't live in Arkansas)?

How has Ryland been good to Kris? I'm not aware. I'm assuming Kris has been equally good to Ryland, since he gave him a job. :)

Yeah, you can have a good career - but I'm not against the Top 40. I think it's worth aspiring to.

So is Kris becoming the new poster boy, in place of Taylor Hicks? Not sure why Lee was not available for that job. He's so much more qualified. I know the Chicago Trib is not known for being a Kris supporter in the first place, but still.

Wow, you guys are chatty! I have nothing to add really, and I just wanted to comment on the picture from Kris' mom! I just thought the three women all look alike in that picture. Please tell me I'm not the only one to think that! In any case, Daniel's future wife is very pretty!

Oh, I do have something else. The talk about layers made me think about something that David Cook said at some point after he won Idol. He said something like out of the 5 cards he had in his hands (musically speaking), he probably played only 3 of them on Idol. Anyway, he said in a better way, but it kind of stuck with me this whole time.

So why do you thihnk Kris won, then?

Although, I wanted Kris to win, if Adam had won I'd have understood why he won. For me Adam's best song was Mad World (that's just for me - that's the one I bought in video format and single format - it blew me away) Kris's ANS also blew me away but they were earlier in the season and then Heartless just spun the whole thing on it's head. For me that was a real ballsy move by Kris to sing a current song.. that never mind it being current.. had just been sung BY THE ORIGINAL ARTIST on the Idol stage that season. That was beyond ballsy. It showed me that this guy who I really, really liked musically had so much more going on than even I thought. He had guts, and not only was it gutsy it was actually amazing. So Kris built a lot of momentum from that, then Danny's gone and I think a lot of Danny's fans would vote for Kris over Adam, and I'm only talking about from a musical standpoint. So we get to the finale and Adam's Mad World while still good, didn't top what he had done previously for me it lacked the emotion of the original performance. (more props, but less emotion) They both sucked on No Boundaries (through no fault of their own - that song is a dream killer) So then they did the obligatory make the world better songs from Simon Fuller, kinda cancel each other out, and then Kris does ANS again.. and there's something extra to it. Maybe it's the larger audience or the dressier look, but I thought it was even better the 2nd time. And I think that's why Kris won.

And LMAO that we're still talking about this 2 years later. (and mostly agreeing with each other no less... ) Season 9 really did suck, didn't it?

I guess I meant, did any of the rest of the band go (who don't live in Arkansas)?

No I don't think so, probably just Cale.

How has Ryland been good to Kris? I'm not aware. I'm assuming Kris has been equally good to Ryland, since he gave him a job.

I don't really know for sure and yes, they've been good to each other, but Ryland seems to have a lot of friends Like the guys in Lifehouse and Maroon 5. Just speculation on my part actually. But, yes. Jobs are good things too. :)

So is Kris becoming the new poster boy, in place of Taylor Hicks? Not sure why Lee was not available for that job. He's so much more qualified. I know the Chicago Trib is not known for being a Kris supporter in the first place, but still.

Isn't Lee from Chicago? That could be why ;) Not that I read it... cause I actually didn't, but I can guess at the direction they took in the article.

Please tell me I'm not the only one to think that!

Nope I totally thought that too! Lol - and they're possibly the cutest family ever. :) I wanna pinch their little pink cheeks.
He said something like out of the 5 cards he had in his hands (musically speaking), he probably played only 3 of them on Idol.

That's a good way to put it. Layers are important, and these guys have them which is why I like them so much.

Adam only talks about homophobia when he is asked about the AMA fuss. And he is not the one who keeps bringing this thing up. CBS proved that there is a double standard when they blurred footage of Adam kissing Tommy, but did not blur the footage of Madonna kissing Britney. It's interesting to note that so many female singers are allowed to market themselves as bisexual so long as it complies with male heterosexual fantasy for girl-girl action. Just because Adam is successful, it doesn't mean he should not talk about bias against displays of sexuality by gay men. Openly gay actors like Richard Chamberlain, Rupert Everett, Jane Lynch said recently that being openly gay is still a career disadvantage in Hollywood.

" He understands why he lost to Kris." No, he's rationalized it, I think. Notice how he never comes close to suggesting he lost just because Kris was better liked as a singer and performer. He's "polarizing," or his loss was anticipated because he "never expected to get as far as he did" - that's not modesty. And no record deal pre-Idol because he's too "out there," not because his music at the time wasn't good enough, or whatever the real reason was.
You are wrong again. Adam has said multiple times that Kris is amazingly talented and deserved to win.

You are bashing Adam's personality for no good reason. Stop trying to find fault with him not saying things to perfectly satisfies you .

I'm sorry, but I see Kris fans like you coming up with a million excuses why Kris is not selling well and I find it pathetic. Your comments have made me think you just cannot understand why the whole world doesn’t see the specialness of Kris. Lee is getting a lot of flack because his album is being outsold by Crystal's but I don't see his fans acting like you. They accept that he is not that popular in the real world. Winning Idol is not the be all and end all. There is still a competition after the season ends. Contestants need to win over the media, the industry, the enthusiasm of a record label and 19M, to get a large loyal fanbase… being an Idol winner doesn’t automatically grant you all those things.

CapsuleNeo, you make some very valid points. Now, would you mind not trying to analyze my and others' motivations for why we say what we say. I hope we can just keep things at face value and address what actually was said. Let's not personally attack, either. No need to be rude.

You are bashing Adam's personality for no good reason. Stop trying to find fault with him not saying things to perfectly satisfies you .

Okay, I'll stop. :) Not because you're demanding it, but because I'm through. I didn't mean to be obnoxious. Sorry if I was.
Isn't Lee from Chicago? That could be why  Not that I read it... cause I actually didn't, but I can guess at the direction they took in the article.

Oh, yeah - Lee is from Chicago! Thanks! I forgot about that. So - you didn't read it, but it was only one sentence in the article. The guy said, "Beyond the search for the next Carrie Underwood — as opposed to, say, the next Kris Allen — the major challenge for "Idol" is to reset the clock."

And I think that's why Kris won.

I think that's as good as any other analysis I've read. My favorite is from What Not To Sing - remember that?

The show is terribly manipulative. He was basically buried as fodder, at first, then made a great impact with ANS, and everyone in the media took notice - then he was buried again for a while. Finally there were so few left standing people had to notice him. I really think he is one of the few examples of winning AI against the odds - but it's funny how most people find that fishy. Why are most people brainwashed into thinking that the TCOs must always win? TCOs always winning would be fishy, to me.

Anyway, read this. It's a new thing by Rushfield. His research is proving really interesting.

The Richard Rushfield Interview, Part 3: 'Hopefully, that myth can be put to rest' - Idol Chatter: American Idol News, Rumors, & Information

This is part of what he says (but do read the whole quote, this is only the end):

I was told in my research that not only did these parties not sway the vote, but that Kris Allen won by an extremely significant margin -- that it was not a close vote at all. Not only did the parties not sway it, you could have eliminated every vote cast in Kris' home state of Arkansas and he still would have won handily.
Hopefully, that myth can be put to rest, but I doubt it.

What makes me happiest about this is that it comfirms what I thought. I have listened to those people for a year and a half. Thank you, Richard Rushfield.

That's interesting. I wish I had seen that season. I love Cook. He's one of the best singers and musicians and also one of the best and most interesting people ever to come off that show. (I like Archie quite a bit, as well - how can you not?). :D There's something else about him, which is that he seems to have integrity, and that's another thing the audience (I feel) senses. Integrity as a person or a musician or both.
