Okay, so the other day I was in Home Depot, and I heard Live Like We're Dying, and I thought I would mention it here, but then, it plays eveywhere, right? - so I figured - nah. But tonight, I was in HD again, and I heard Red Guitar!! And this was awesome - the song that followed it was Everybody Wants To Rule The World. (The original, I mean.) Kind of like being at a mini-concert.*

Kris's voice and way of singing and phrasing are so distinctive. I love it when people say he doesn't have a distinctive sound. What are they smoking?

I really like that album tee, too. And the thesaurus tweet is hilarious.

*When I first heard RG I didn't even recognize it because I was concentrating on something else. I was like: wow, that sounds good - oh, it's Kris! lol

The puppy knows what we want.

Smart dog.

I do want new songs, but I always get apprehensive about new songs because artists' styles evolve, and sometimes my favorite artists change their styles in subtle ways and never go back to the style or sound I liked them for originally.

So I'm reading a detailed discussion, elsewhere, about Adam's current hair, makeup, and clothes. This kind of discussion makes me want to shout: Kill me now! Don't bore me to death slowly like this! Isn't torture against international law?

Strangely, a lot of the same people who spend their days talking about Adam's looks are the same ones who say Kris won Idol because of his looks. If Adam looks so good, how is it Kris won on looks? Is Kris better looking? Oh, that's right. Not to them, to "teenyboppers." Texting teenyboppers. Texting teenyboppers from Tulip, Texas.

There's a lot wrong with that, beginning with the negative term, "teenyboppers." Wait, these wouldn't be the same teenyboppers who like Adam on MOD or Top 40 radio? Oh! You mean those hip, informed, edgy young adult music fans with great taste! Well, why didn't you say so in the first place?

Now we know that teens don't make up a great part of the Idol viewing demographic (any more) (if they ever did). So that bit of mythology will have to undergo some revision. Any guesses what new myth will take its place? First prize for best guess (in 200 words or less) will be a one way ticket to see the finale of Sri Lankan X Factor with guest mentors Bobby Sherman and David Cassidy.

Just so you know I do get out of the house occasionally, I have to tell you about my trip to the mall today. Doesn't matter which one, there are about five or six or eleven around here. They are really pushing Idol in the mall! Holy moly. Every single kiosk has a big, lit-from-behind poster of Ryan, Steven T, JLo, and Randy, and there are a couple more in the food court. On the overhead TV sets, one every hundred feet or so, they're showing two Idol ads: One with the judges and Ryan, and contestants getting gold tickets. The other one is the Lee segment of the Idol commercials. Just Lee. Over and over and over. Lee and his hometown. Lee in the paint store. Lee and his old boss. Is anyone looking up and watching these things? Well, I was. But I really didn't notice anyone paying attention. I guess it's like subliminal advertising.

Debra Byrd looks back on a decade of American Idol (and makes me wonder why I bothered to vote, because obviously, none of them care how I voted).

Vocal Coach Debra Byrd Looks Back at a Decade of 'American Idol' - Idol Worship

In other Idol news, some of the things the Idol producers and judges said in their press conference make me question if I will even watch this year. If it wasn't for the fun of interacting with you guys I doubt I would. I don't like the show and if they care so little what I think why would I ever want to vote again? They think they know more than the viewers, know what the viewers want, better than the viewers do. They probably only have a season or two left of this show - at this rate.

it's good to know Debra is the person responsible for getting David Cook on the radar, because I know when I listened to him sing Little Sparrow I thought to myself - wow that's so good if only he had a better look I'd buy his music. LMAO

I can't lie the JLo Steven Tyler Randy dynamic has me intrigued. I love how the words that kept coming up in the interviews were... CHEMISTRY, FUN, TALENT, YOUNGER

It's almost like they plan those things.....lol

I wouldn't be surprised if Fox is planning on Idol's 10th season to be it's last. But since I want X factor to die a horrible death I kinda want Idol to live.

I have to disagree with you, there. They wouldn't hire these new people and put all this money and work into it if they were planning on this being the last season.

Washington Post writer bashed Kris - and Lee, and David Cook. If the Idol producers want to create a backlash against guitar playing Idol winners with their comments, the press really seem to be running with the theme. (Although this is Lisa DeMoraes, who was always a Glambert, anyhow.)

Well.. I don't know.. I hope not. But it's not like Fox is going to be without a music franchise since X Factor is coming too. Plus I am not comforted by the fact that they keep mentioning trying to find the next Susan Boyle. She's got a good voice, but it's not something I want to listen to.

The thing is.. I like WG(uy)(irl)WG So they can bash til the cows come home, but it doesn't mean I'm going to agree with them. :) I'll probably always gravitate to WGWG over someone with a diva voice. Diva voice just doesn't interest me.

Plus I think part of the WGWG's problem is the fact that the show itself bashes them. If the show was excited about and promoted them like they did the big voices then the public would be too.

Nothing points to their planning to end the show. I just don't see money and time spent on retooling and promoting a loser. They would have just cancelled it and not had another season. It might be cancelled after this season if they can't reverse a downward trend - but I don't think they plan on it.

The public? They're always excited by them. Think of all of the ones who are successful. And on Idol, the three who won, won - by public vote (not that I actually like to lump those three together). It's just the usual Idol nonsense. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. The Englishmen who are (in part) behind this show don't really understand Americans, our natures or tastes. They get it on a surface level but something is always just slightly off.

WGWG shouldn't catch on as an acronym. Isn't it just used by Lambert fans? Only in the blogosphere could people get away with intimating it's uncool to be a rocker who plays guitar. lol. There's nothing hip about not being able to play an instrument. It's not bad, but I find it hard to see what makes it preferable. In 2011 we're used to instrument-playing singers, in every genre of music. Nobody's going to convince me it's unhip to play guitar. That way lies madness.

ETA: I didn't really write about your point. There are Idol fans who prefer the divas. I agree that if Idol promoted the singer musician type (good ones, unlike the mostly mediocre ones last season), people would like it. Partly, I think they don't like that type of music themselves, so they aren't good judges of it, and they probably let a lot of good people get away (I think this happened last season). The show should be produced by young musicians; it would be completely different.

Idol fans in general?

I don't know. I used to read MJ's blog all the time (in 2009, let's say), and I never saw it. Who started it, I don't know. But Lambert fans seem to like it.

It's the "white" part I have the most problem with, since I don't see what color has to do with musical ability or talent.

Since Idol allowed instruments, three winners have played instruments. Mainly I think it seems to bother Adam fans. For all we know Adam may have done worse in the early years, not better. There's no way to know but competing against big divas is never something I would advise. If Lil Rounds had sung like Jennifer Hudson, who knows?

Is a black talented winner preferable to a white talented winner? If one of David/Kris/Lee were black, would that make it so much more interesting? Or different? Color is irrelevant to me.

Can't argue with that. That's a really valid point. And also in sort of the same vein that's also one of the reasons I like the gender parity thing. I'd rather have 10 excellent girls or 10 excellent guys if that's who shows up to compete. I know they're making a tv show so they want a mix, but honestly.. I just want them to be good. I cheered for Kelly and Melinda and even Fantasia who I thought deserved to win - even though I knew her music wasn't going to be my thing.

For all we know, they may have done worse. Competing against a lot more diva types. You can't predict things like that. And you make a mistake when you try to orchestrate outcomes. Therein also lies madness.

That's true too.

You quoted me but I changed what I wrote. But thanks for agreeing with my original thought. :)

People do a lot of "if only" or "what if?" thinking in Idol-land. It tends to frustrate me to read this kind of speculation because, in reality, if one little detail had been different then a thousand other things would have changed, not just one. Something you think may have happened probably wouldn't have, or would have happened differently. But anyway, what is, is, and that's it. Deal with it. Right?

And like you say, obviously, the audience likes the guitar playing singers - so as long as they do - why doesn't the show support and promote these people instead of suggesting there's something wrong with it? Just because last season they had some less than strong ones? No, that would be too logical, I guess.

You are blaming Adam fans and generalizing about the entire fanbase as usual .
