Canadian troops mistakenly kill another Afghan civilian

Last Updated: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 | 7:35 AM ET

CBC News

Canadian soldiers killed an Afghan civilian Tuesday morning, the fifth accidental shooting of an Afghan by Canadian gunfire this month.
The shooting occurred as a white Toyota approached Canadian troops who had stopped on a Kandahar road to form a security cordon around a broken-down armoured vehicle.
This white Toyota was fired upon after it approached Canadian troops who were formed into a security cordon. The driver was killed and a passenger wounded.
(CBC)
Maj. Dale MacEachern, a spokesman for the Canadian Forces, said the group of Canadians signalled for the approaching vehicle to stop, but troops opened fire when the civilian driver proceeded.
MacEachern said the vehicle drove past one checkpoint manned by Afghan National Police, then accelerated toward Canadian vehicles.
The Afghan driver was killed and a passenger was wounded.
Mistaken civilian shootings over the past year, including several within past few weeks, have increased tensions between Canadian troops and the Afghans, from whom Canadians are trying to win trust in the region.
The Canadian Forces last week sent a message to troops to use more restraint before opening fire to avoid accidentally killing civilians.

On Feb. 18, Canadian soldiers accidentally killed an Afghan civilian and a member of the Afghan national police following an attack on a Canadian convoy.
Troops killed an Afghan police officer and also shot and killed a civilian who approached Canadian Forces soldiers while they were engaged in a gunbattle with insurgents. The Canadian Forces said the Afghan did not heed repeated warnings to move away.
A week earlier, Canadian troops shot and killed a civilian and wounded an Afghan police officer in separate incidents in the same day.
The military is conducting investigations into all of those cases.
More than 2,000 Canadian soldiers are serving in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar region. Since the mission started in 2002, 44 Canadian soldiers and one Canadian diplomat have been killed.

Are you really sure you want to discuss friendly fire here Curiosity?

Does anyone have any idea of how many Canadians British and other "allies" have been killed by American service people?

Does anyone really believe this is a "friendly fire" event?

This is just another type of suicide bomber without the bomb. The car raced at the Canadians after repeated warnings. I would say they are doing this to cause unrest towards the NATO soldiers.

I don't understand how our American friend can be so upset at this event...

Isn't the policy of pre-emptive attack a well-worn, tried-and-true...effective counter against anyone you think might have a car full of weapons of mass destruction?

My "intent here" was....

To show even the best can make mistakes...... we jump on the U.S. military for every incident.....
and I watched and waited all last week for the first incident to be published here of Canadian friendly fire.... nothing was said.... when this second one happened, I thought I would wade into the river...

Calm down folks.... things happen when people are given guns to shoot. They shoot.

If you don't like it - stop equipping military forces with weaponry.

I don't believe this should be considered as a "mistake", the car was racing towards the Canadians. Do you really believe that Afghans in that area do not know that they need to stay away from NATO troops? It is another way for the enemy to cause confusion and discontent.

As usual, all "never been there's" are in here bitchin'!!!

It's a war zone, the most effective weapon to date has been the "car bomb".

I won't expect anyone here to understand the actions that take place under these surcumstances. Save the few that have been there.

Agreed. As it said in the article, the car accellerated towards the NATO troops. That seems like an aggressive action to me.
