Green Party of Canada co-leader Jonathan Pedneault says his team is exploring its legal options after the Leaders’ Debates Commission (LDC) announced this week it would rescind the party’s invitations to both of the 2025 election debates??
Here’s the punchline here. The Greens submitted 343 names for 343 ridings, to qualify for the debates, & then they withdrew over 100 names “strategically” in order to fiddle-fuck the system towards anyone but the Conservatives winning those ridings (?) ‘cuz democracy.
“I think it’s a very unfortunate and sad day,” Pedneault (who holds no elected office anywhere) told CTV Your Morning in an interview Thursday. “This, for me, very clearly is a
political decision and a sad one for democracy.”
Elizabeth May, the Green party’s other co-leader, said Wednesday that it was “unfair” to exclude Pedneault but not Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet, whose party only runs candidates within Quebec (but still meets the other two criteria in a 2/3rds thing, so the Bloc is eligible), while the Greens have endorsed candidates in every province and in two of Canada’s three territories (and then pulled them back like Lucy with the football) but don’t meet the 2 of 3 prerequisites criteria like holding at least 4% voter support & having members sitting in Parliament.
Jennifer Howard, NDP national campaign director, said that her party respects the decision of the commission. Maybe the NDP needs to rent a room (or a closet) somewhere so they can get everybody in the same place and then on the same page.

Pedneault said that the matter was not yet settled, in his view.
Asked if he expected the LDC to reverse its decision for Thursday night’s English debate, Pedneault said it would be “the right thing to do,” (?) but alluded to the impact on Canada’s Francophone electorate, now that the French debate has already concluded.
“This is a bilingual country,” he said,
which falls under the category of, “So what? How does that change the fact that the Greens didn’t meet the criteria?”
“We’re still exploring the various legal recourse we have; this is not the end of it for the commission, for sure,” he said. “I spent 15 years of my life fighting for human rights and uplifting voices in conflict areas (
in Canada?), of various people. I find it extremely infuriating to see a non-elected (
like himself?) body in this country decide what the viability, or so-called viability of a political party would be, especially one with seats (
neither of which he holds) in the House of Commons.”

The LDC decision, Pedneault said, signifies a broader push toward an American-style two-party system….?…with those 4 leaders of those four parties that actually qualified to be there involved into the debate? Anyway, Party leaders from the Liberals, Conservatives, NDP and Bloc Quebecois will face off in the
second and final debate Thursday night in Montreal.
