The stage will look different that originally planned Wednesday night, when Canada's major party leaders square off in the first of two nationally televised debates.

Instead of five podiums on the stage, there will now only be four.

Green Party co-dependant Jonathan Pedneault called the "last minute decision" both "unfounded" and "undemocratic." ???
The Green co-leader said he "fully expects" to be at the debate and for the commission to reverse its decision?

In order to participate in the debates, parties must meet two of three conditions: having one seat in the House of Commons at dissolution, holding at least four per cent national support in polls 28 days before the election, or have endorsed candidates in at least 90 per cent of ridings 28 days before the election. Ok.

Four weeks before election day the Greens were only polling at three per cent in national polls, but they did hold two seats when Parliament was dissolved, and submitted the names of 343 candidates they intended to nominate to run in every riding.

But when the official Elections Canada candidates' list was released last week it included only 232 Green Party candidates? 🤔

The commission initially defended the decision to include the Greens after the official candidates list was released, but ultimately changed its mind on Wednesday. Oh well.

The French debate is the first time Liberal Leader Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will meet face-to-face in a debate. The debate originally was scheduled for 8 p.m. ET but was moved two hours earlier. Both the Bloc and the NDP had called for the start time to be changed because the Montreal Canadiens play the Carolina Hurricanes Wednesday night.

So it's at 4PM here?

Carney said the staffers who were responsible for planting the buttons, have been “reassigned within the campaign.” (???) The Liberal campaign did not immediately clarify how that affected their employment in concrete terms.
These were not low-level workers, but people within the Liberal war room. They were — still are, apparently — intricately associated with getting Carney elected.

Planting buttons with slogans such as “Stop the Steal” — a reference to Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss — was an attempt to implicate Conservatives as mad MAGA supporters and denigrate them in the eyes of voters.

It was immoral, unethical and possibly criminal. We’ve just had a national inquiry into foreign interference in this country and here we have a blatant example of disinformation being spread by a Canadian political party.

“Disinformation is false information that is deliberately intended to mislead. Once a disinformation narrative is introduced into the information ecosystem, the goal is for it to be spread virally and unwittingly by others,” says the Privy Council Office.

Is this another one of those scenarios where rules are for peons and others, but not for the liberals, & especially not for the liberal elite?

“Disinformation is a constantly evolving threat that affects all democracies and impacts all parts of society in different ways. Countering disinformation is a global issue and requires a response from all areas of society — governments, industry, independent election administrators, civil society and citizens.”
When challenged about the buttons, Carney apologized and said, “This is totally unacceptable,” adding, “I’ve made it absolutely clear to my campaign that this behaviour or anything approximating it or in that spirit is unacceptable (and) cannot happen again.”

But a lame apology probably isn’t the kind of forceful response envisaged by the Privy Council Office, and it is definitely not the kind of response that should be coming from a government that says it’s committed to fighting disinformation.
Similarly, Carney failed to act responsibly over the Chiang affair, after it was revealed that his Liberal candidate told Chinese-language media that people should kidnap a Conservative rival and hand him over to the Chinese Consulate to collect a bounty.

So the debate is two hours long, and the hockey game that it’s bounced for starts at 5 PM here? I’m still having trouble following the logic.
Quebecers want to be able to cry in their beer when the Canadiens lose and not be distracted by petty politics. If it started at 8 it would end about the same time as the hockey game.

So, how under these criteria does the Block get to participate? They represent no one outside Quebec, nor do they have anyone running in any riding outside Quebec.

Anyway, the scheduling, and that whole pesky still working for a living thing, & our neighbours plumbing problem that is going to roll into some of tonight after work also, I missed the French debate.

Probably gonna end up missing some of the English debate too. Any memorable or “got ya” moments last night?

No real "gotchas". Singh threw a few good punches but they didn't connect.
