Canada should unilaterally drop all tariffs and subsidies.

Think of the money this would save on government civil servants flying around the world to negotiating trade deals all of which one simple vote in Parliament could eliminate.

I suppose we could still respect UN sanctions, but unilaterally trade freely beyond that.

It would only work if other nations play fair. Good luck on that.

Singapore, Hong Kong, and New Zealand have unilaterally dropped trade barriers except for public-policy matters. Hong Kong for example still tariffs tobacco, alcohol, and fuel imports for public-health considerations.

Singapore and Hong Kong are wealthier than Canada on a per-capita basis. I don't know about New Zealand, but understand that has benefitted from unilatteral free trade too. How is that?

A couple of paragraphs about economics from your perspective is in order I think.

i think you.re an intelligent person capable of defending your position.

So, three nations out of 200? Canada is right next door to one of the biggest trade whiners in the world. What do you think of the chances the US will play fair, especially considering that it never has?

btw on dairyIf we drop dairy subsidies and protections US factory farms will simply flood Canada with cheap milk destroying a 200 year old dairy farming culture.

There is no doubt about what will happen and anyone who advocates for doing it is an idiot.

ON the dairy issue if you were to look into this you find out that US dairy farms produce way more milk than do Canadian dairy farms because their regulations regarding how much milk you can chemically induce a cow to make are far more liberal than Canada's.
The downside is that US stock does make make for good breeding and that is why just about 100% of all dairy breeding stock is Canadian.

SO the destruction of Canadian dairy would in fact threaten American dairy.

But that is just one of those small little facts that you have to understand prior to deciding about things like tariffs.

Unlike being a white nationalist climate change denier which you can be just by closing your eyes and wishing.

Canada and US are both overproducing. Have you seen all the yogurt lately? They needed to create the yogurt market to survive.

Trump: "Let's drop all subsidies, tariffs, and any other protective measures from these trade agreements."

The rest of the world: "You first buddy."

Trump raises tariffs one day and demands you drop them the next.

He is a fake president. Does not know what he needs to know and does not care.

All he needs to do is make abortion illegal and drop environmental laws and his hideous base will be happy

Trump is implying that the Canadian milk market is something that has been taken from those American farmers in Wisconsin ... that they have a right to it and that we have somehow stolen it away from the rightful American owners.

It never was their market. They have never had access to it and therefore, how can we suddenly be responsible for American dairy farmers doing themselves in? Truth is, our supply management system has prevented the very hardships that the American farmers are experiencing and that the root if the problem is a basic inability of the Americans to care for each other's welfare (see: selective US health care).

By the way, if you think that commie Canada is the bad guy, check out how Uncle Sam subsidizes and protects their corn crops. Let's see the Yanks drop THOSE in exchange for our dairy market. That will never happen. The corn lobby is like the health care lobby, tobacco lobby, armaments lobbies ... more powerful than the US government.

Everyone understands that Canada is not the bad guy.

Trump is in fact a lot more embarrassing to Americans than he is to us.

To us he is just a drunken guest - to them he a drunk Uncle.

The American media are saying that Trudeau and Canada are the bully, today. America doesn't want or need friends, allies, peaceful neighbours, apparently.

Only if you're watching Fox news.

Every other news organization in the US and around the world are saying the exact opposite.

We all know who the true petulant and childish little bully in the sandbox is...

which is why Trump has declared war on the media

because, like Walter says, I guess he never read the constitution.

YOU have literally no understanding of economics.

So if you have an undersatanding of economics, you should understand how unilateral free trade has affected Hong Kong, Singapore, and New Zealand. Can you explain it?

So, three nations out of 200? Canada is right next door to one of the biggest trade whiners in the world. What do you think of the chances the US will play fair, especially considering that it never has?

And at least two of those three (and maybe even the third) are wealthier than Canada on a per capita basis. So, which should we emulate? The three or the rest?

As for the US, it may or may not reciprocate. Unilateral free trade on Canada's part would increase the probability of reciprocity in whole or in part on the US' part. Even if it doesn't reciprocate, then let it hurt its own consumers. Once US consumers see how much Canadian consumers pay, they too would soon be pressuring their own government to reciprocate to lower their own costs.

Canadian protectionism hurts Canadian consumers.

The POTUS, too stupid to understand this, has decided to hurt US consumers in retaliation and US consumers, too stupid to understand this, applaud him.

1. None of those places has unilateral free trade.

2. None of those places is Canada with Canada's economic situation.

3 we cannot destroy our economy on a whim. We leave that up to the UK.
